Education is is future-oriented - it is about development and growth even when we are studying the past. Thus, as educators, the aspect of thinking we tend to focus upon is learning. All young children have a natural talent for creative process of information. It’s during the teen years that natural creative processing is replaced with the status quo. The status quo memorizes knowledge and forgets how to process it. In the classroom, memorizing is what counts. Standardized test reinforces the status quo. It kills creative processing ability. Status quo attitudes will follow them into adult life where they will have to ask their children for help.
Today, the education has a new tool on the market. Behavior control drugs. Any student who refuses to accept the status quo is labeled a troublemaker and will be drugged. The student now behaves in the classroom with glassy eyes and school officials receive high performance ratings. The student may get passing grades and land a job with a comfortable wage, but that will be all. Teenage dreams of great ambitions are gone.

Standardized tests are unnecessary because they are excruciating to the minds of many innocent students. Each year, the tests get tougher and stricter until the students cannot process their own thoughts. The tests become torturous to the minds of those only starting in the world of tests. Standardized tests should be limited in public schools because it only measures a small portion of learning. They do not account for many important concepts such as creativity and critical thinking. Some standardized tests only measure rote memory skills. Multiple choice tests only measure knowledge recall and not a student’s full understanding of a topic(Berube,2004). Standardized do not test in every subject area. Most tests only focus on reading and math skills. It does not include subjects such as science and social studies. The use of multiple-choice standardized tests does not always allow students to demonstrate their full understanding of a topic. Furthermore, tests limit student learning by focusing on only on cognitive abilities and ignore many other important qualities that are important to a student’s success(NCTE,2014). Due to the fact that the majority of standardized test do not measure all forms of learning, they neglect students who strengths may be in not tested subject areas.

Once upon a time, there was a six-year-old girl who lived with her elderly grandmother after she lost her mother to a massive heart attack. On one hot summer day, the grandmother is reading, telling stories and speaking to the little girl. At one point the grandmother said “I want you to get your education.” The little girl asked “Why is getting my education important?” Her grandmother responded with “You need your education so you can take care of yourself and maybe me when you’re older; just promise me you will get your education.” Her granddaughter said, “I promise grandma, but school is really hard and I don’t like it.” The elderly woman laughs softly and said “I know its hard baby, but don’t give up and if you need help just ask for help.” The young one smiled and said “Okay I’ll try my best and get my education.” The grandmother also smiles with her.
To begin with standardized testing creates several critical problems for students and for the education industry. These tests are created to test over particular things. In the end these types of tests are only limited in the amount of knowledge that can be tested toward students. What is education? A seminal question that has been raised since ancient times. Certainly, the Ancient Greeks (Athenians) had an idea of how education worked take your upper class males, teach them to read, write, quote literature, play and instrument, and become a proficient athlete. The purpose was to study to become an effective citizen, not for a trade. Females learned basics enough to manage a household, rarely more; males of the upper classes learned to participate in society, others learned a trade or became what their fathers had been, etc. (farmers, metalworkers, fishermen, etc.) (Konstam, 2003, 94-5). Traditionally, education in the United States holds that it is facts that are important, as opposed to a way of thinking and utilizing those facts. The teacher lectures, the student reads, the student regurgitates, passes, and the cycle continues. Are there alternatives to this approach that will push educational theory beyond the bounds of such a narrow focus? And if so, why are these theories seen as delaying adulthood?
