What Is Life Like In The 1930's

The novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird”, represented what life was like in the 1930’s as a fiction story that was told from a little girl’s point of view. As I researched the 1930’s and the Great Depression, I discovered that every person in the story represented some kind of issue during that time. Some of the main issues found in this novel are the Great Depression, women’s rights, alcohol abuse, rape cases, and racism in the South.
The Great Depression occurred mainly because of the stock market crash of 1929. It lasted from 1929-1939, a total of ten years (Amadeo). This affected almost everyone who lived in the United States at this time, even if you lived in a small town. People lost their jobs, their homes, and their money (Flannery). She constantly told Scout not to wear her overalls, instead wear a dress. She also taught Scout the meaning of being a lady. "After all, if Aunty could be a lady at a time like this, so could I." (Lee). Scout said this while she was with her Aunty at the missionary circle after Atticus had told them that Tom had died. Aunt Alexandra just put on a smile and went back out to the guests, and that's when Scout finally figured out that being a lady might not be all bad.
