WHAT IS METAPHYSICS?
What is Metaphysics? The universal definition of metaphysics in philosophy is the aspect that deals with the first principle of things, which include abstract concepts of the being, knowing, cause, identity, time and space. Basically, metaphysics encounters the basic questions in such possible terms; what is there and what is it like? As individuals, we attempt to grasp or comprehend the theories and meaning of every aspect to the world, and those aspects include certain existences, objects, properties, space and time, cause and effect, and such possibilities. Martin Heidegger is critical in our discussion of the meaning behind metaphysics in which he incorporates the nothing as the manifestness of beings as such for the human Dasein. In his excerpt of “What is Metaphysics?” gives rise to many details and complexities of that are crucial to ultimately understand the definition and the importance of the metaphysics. To fully grasp the understanding of the Metaphysics, one must turn their focus to aspects of the excerpt and address the following ideas: how Heidegger ‘elaborates’ the question concerning the nothing, how he approaches the characterization of the nothing as the complete negation of the totality of beings, his concept of how the fundamental attunement of anxiety makes the nothing manifest, and his connection between the manifestation of nothing in anxiety and being as a whole. The first
In the Discourse on Metaphysics by Leibniz he suggest that, "we maintain that everything that is to happen to some person is already contained virtually in his nature or notion, as properties of a circle are contained in its definition." This assertion raised a difficulty for Leibniz. This difficulty was that "human freedom will no longer hold, and that an absolute fatality would rule over all our actions as well as over all the rest of what happens in the world." With such a reality there would be no use for free will and whatever fate succumbs an individual is the will of the Most High; in other words, being destined. But for Leibniz, this is not the determined reality of humanity. Leibniz
Metaphysics deals with the nature of reality, it asks the question, “What is really real?” Knight describes an example about how the floor is not really the floor in order for the reader to understand that reality is not as simple as it may seem. These types of questions may cause your head to spin. Metaphysics goes beyond the surface, dives deep into our minds to question what we actually believe. “Metaphysics” translated means beyond physics, which is very suiting. Metaphysics is important and relevant in education because it makes students go beyond the simple facts, it makes students think critically. Essentially it asks students four questions, “How did the universe come into existence?” Is there a God and what powers all exist?” “What
Throughout many centuries philosophers have argued over the existence of God. In today’s society many people tend to hesitate in believing in a God because of the new scientific discoveries. For example, in the mid 1990s scientists built the Hubble telescope which revealed that there were billions of galaxies in our universe, this discovery led some people to question how can one divine being create so much and yet have a personal connection with everyone in the world. Which, in result, may take some scientific explanation to strengthen one’s belief in God, but for those who believe there is a benevolent God they do not need science to show proof that he exists because of their morals and beliefs they have been raised to follow. In this paper I will prove that God does exist by explaining the ontological, cosmological, and design argument.
In God's elemental metaphysics, Angels, Jins, demons and the universe of nature are intertwined and interact continuously and continuously to form the process of metaphysics in everyday life. Metaphysics is an abstract reconstruction of events composed of components of human action that starts with the physical action thought, done and spoken. Metaphysics is also a typical manifestation of humanity and the phenomenon of human existence. The close interconnection between man and metaphysics is illustrated by the role of metaphysics in the process of forming attributes that ultimately shape the character of the human identity. The introduction of metaphysics is a fact that can trace back from the earliest human development. In this case, humans play a role in presenting the existence of history that can arise if the human life had moved to tomorrow and leave yesterday. Thus, "yesterday" as the embodiment of human existence in the history of his life. The person who is forty, or sixty years old, is of course not born at that age, and this proves that every human being has a past as a proof of the existence of history in which there is a human role in history. Impossible Iqbal's history can express as the process appears without the meaning of human role. Man as an object of metaphysics consists of physical, soul and spirit is the inherent unity of humans.
Dear Past Murray, this is your present-day self. I am writing this letter to help guide you in your journey through the Masters of Counselling graduate program. You are going to experience a fundamental shift in your perspectives on human nature and the nature of change. Currently, your point of view and insights are limited to a behaviorist context (Skinner, 2012) and to a behavior analysis approach (Fee, A., Schrieber, E, Nobel, N. Valdovinos, M, 2016). This has served you well in your work with youth and young adults with challenging behaviors. However, as you start this journey you have started to ask yourself what theory to follow. The answer to this question will be found when you take a step back from the various models of counselling to look at what really makes a difference to client outcomes and to develop a
I actually read the Star Trek Synopsis first, then I read chapter 3 in the book Metaphysics: Constructing a Worldview by William Hasker (1983). With me doing that, even though the reading by Hasker was very difficult in understanding it helped me gain a little understanding on what Hasker were saying. According to Maddox in the Synopsis: Star Trek Episode “The Measure of a Man”, Data is not a person but property. Maddox refer to Data as a “it” and not a he. Data is a unique android that can mimic human behavior, so in other words he has feelings, emotions, and believes he has a free will to make his own choices. However, to Maddox because Data was created and has a positronic brain “it” is not human but property. According to Hasker (1983),

Methods and Meditations on First Philosophy is a discourse by Rene Descartes, which largely focuses on the nature of humanity and divinity. This essay is a discussion of this discourse, and will summarize, explain and object to various parts of his work. The majority of this essay focuses on Descartes Sixth Meditation, which includes his argument that corporeal things do exist.
Martin Heidegger stated, criticizing the “wrong” path that western philosophy deviated to, that people understood “being” only in the superficial sense. The advancements in mathematics and natural sciences along the millennia always pre-assumed that being was a known phenomenon and never bothered to explore its true nature; bypassing the herculean task, we never delved into what “Ontos” really
To understand the connection between the occasion for Heidegger’s speech and its content, the setting needs to be clarified. Heidegger’s speech takes place during a memorial of the 175th birthday of famous
George R.R. Martin, an American novelist and short-story writer, once said, “Never forget what you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armor yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you.” In other words, one is unique to their reality; this reality is not universal, it lingers on with one’s existence. As humans, we use our reality as a way to interact and thrive in life; it is our sword and shield that fights back at all of life’s misfortunes. With George R.R. Martin’s aid, one can begin to gain perspective on their life, and how this reality has come to be. Moreover, the philosophical publications, Plato’s Five Dialogues, Descartes’ Meditation and Other Metaphysical Writings, and then Nozick’s The Experience Machine guided the idea of reality to a new degree of certainty. The essence of reality exists because the proof of objects and a god are real, arguments from these sources provide evidence that god is real and that reality exists. Corresponding to these stories, one can begin the journey of comprehending that reality is truly exclusive to one’s being.

You see through the ages of philosophy there have been many debates and opinions. Yet it is those opinions that are the most radical that demand the most attention. On that note, we will address two radical philosophizers: Spinoza and Hobbes. Specifically there theory's pertaining to matter and the mind-body problem posed by Descartes. As such we will first address Hobbes then move to Spinoza and end with a combined statement on matter. Therefore we must begin by introducing Thomas Hobbes.
In Leibniz’s Discourse on Metaphysics the slightly disconcerting claim is made that this world is the best of all possible worlds. Leibniz’s optimistic claim about the nature of reality arises out of his definition of God, and in the process of laying his arguments many pieces of Leibniz’s metaphysics can be found. Leibniz reconciles both free will and the problem of evil with his claim about the condition of the universe along with creating the foundations for an ethics based on intent rather than outcome. Although Voltaire’s Candide rather famously satirizes Leibniz’s ideas its objection is weak, and a stronger objection lies in Leibniz’s determinism and the possibility of random chance.
“Metaphysics encompass the study of what is sometimes termed “ultimate reality”. As such, metaphysics raises questions about reality that go beyond sense experience, beyond ordinary science. Metaphysical questions involve free will, the mind-body relationship, supernatural existence, personal immorality, and the nature of being. Some philosophers question the very possibility of a reality
