What is sustainable tourism? According to the World Tourism Organization (2005), sustainable tourism means, “It takes full account of its current and future economic, social, and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities.” There are several destinations that are focusing on sustainable tourism. In the United States, Disney is starting to realize they can make a difference by switching to a more sustainable environment. On the other hand, internationally in Costa Rica, at Rainforest Adventures, they have developed sustainable practices for their guests to get involved with. In 1971, Walt Disney World opened with Magic Kingdom and two resort hotels. Disney World was known as, “The New World”, at this time. Walt Disney World is the best-known destination vacation resort where guests come from all over the world to visit. Today, Walt Disney World holds four different Disney theme parks, two water parks, six golf courses, and Downtown Disney or now known as Disney Springs. Walt Disney World brings “Joy and Inspiration and New Knowledge to all who come to this happy place… a Magic Kingdom where the young at heart of all ages can laugh and play and learn together” (Walt Disney World History, 2009). In 1994, the Rainforest Aerial Tram Atlantic in Costa Rica opened.
