Between all of the stories we have read throughout the semester, “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner was one of the most captivating short stories. Even though this piece lacks character development, it makes up for this through the interesting plot and structure. Each section is presented in a non-chronological order to add more suspense to the climax; we go back in time to learn more about Emily’s life. For example, we find out that she acts a a figure in her town, her dad kept her from men, she finds a man after her dad’s death, that man left, and then her sweetheart came back and never was seen again. In between these events, she does suspicious things such as buying rat poison, hiding her dad’s dead body, and closing up her upstairs
A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner is a short story with third party narration, centered on the main character, Emily Grierson. She is suppressed by her father, life expectations and community interest in her life. The reader gets a sense that Emily cracks under all the pressure and they soon realize after her death, when she is in her seventies, that she did in fact have a mental disorder.

From reading this story it seems the townspeople are revisiting old moments that have happened with Miss Emily in the past. In a short story that 's next to the poem, almost every word has to be almost exactly right.” that Faulkner had mixed feelings about the short story as the best form for his narrative. A Rose for Emily has a complex plot and good pacing. Faulkner only gives information needed to foreshadow the murder at the ending or to allow the audience into Miss Emily’s life, so that we could further understand her.

Throughout the text Faulkner hints about the misfortunes that surround Emily. The biggest problem that was seemed to be low key addressed is to not judge what you think a person may have or go through because you could be wrong or you could be entirely right. The biggest misfortune that happens to Emily, is that she dies and then the writer gives background and flashes back to what Miss Emily’s life through a third person view to show how the townspeople assumed about Miss Emily’s life. Emily Grierson is a lonely, mysterious woman, who lives with her father in a large, post civil war era home. Emily’s father was a controlling man and sent away each man that tried to court Emily. All Emily inherited after her father’s death was the house. However the town thought she had the right to “cling to that which had robbed her.”(Faulkner 311) Things started to look better for Emily when she met a handsome northerner.

Focusing more on the psychological perspective, Miss Emily is very erratic and idiosyncratic in behavior. She isolates herself in her home and locks up her house to prevent anyone from coming in. Her home hides many secrets, but the one that stands out the most is the corpse of Homer Barron, Miss Emily’s lover. For years, Miss Emily has lived and slept with the corpse, which was unknown for many years by all the townspeople.
