Criminals and Nothing Else
The United States has promises of freedom, equality, and accessible opportunities for all in order to build a life. For millions of individuals that promise is lost to them. Living your life in a sequestered bubble is dangerous, one is so focused on their own lives that they are ignorant to the suffering around them. It is important to let the reality kick in, and learn that this country is hurting, and hurting bad due to such high levels of violence. There are several factors that contribute to these levels of violence, such as the war on drugs, mass incarceration, and militarization of the police. Now that the United States has created the image that black people are only known to be criminals, this image has also infected the minds of the police department. Black and Latinos are often the targets of police brutality, constantly being stopped, searched, and arrested with no suspicious activity. Then once they are in the system, it seems impossible to get out. The police has now been militarized because they believe these people are so dangerous that departments need to equip their officers with helmets, masks, assault rifles, and in most extreme cases mine resistant vehicles, as if they are truly going off to war. Discrimination created this horrible tension between communities and their police officers, in which minority communities are unable to trust their police officers because all they see are war machines patrolling their streets, and police officers are unable to trust their communities because all they see are criminals trying to harm them. One could see how the belief of a certain time period can be leaked down through the generations. Even though discrimination has been in the world longer than any of us has been alive, this is the first time it has been documented so clearly. You are able to witness the solidification of the belief that minorities are to be seen as criminals
