Police brutality has been a major issue since slavery. In slavery people, mainly whites, were able to do anything to black people without having to deal without dealing with the consequences. Families were destroyed, people died, babies were killed, and many unknown factors still to this day that will never be known. When slavery was abolished, it did not end right away. It took several years and still is not abolished if you look at in a political way. People of power, mainly white, were not happy that a black person could be seen as equals. This is the main reason why they feel it is okay to lash out at black people. There are several major issues that are causing and epidemic in The United States. However, the main issue that seems to be the most discussed is about police brutality in the black community. “Police brutality is the use of excessive and/or unnecessary force by police when dealing with civilians. “Excessive use of force” means a force well beyond what would be necessary in order to handle a situation. Police brutality can be present in a number of ways. The most obvious form of police brutality is a physical form. Police officers can use nerve gas, batons, pepper spray, and guns in order to physically intimidate or even intentionally hurt civilians. Police brutality can also take the form of false arrests, verbal abuse, psychological intimidation, sexual abuse, police corruption, racial profiling, political repression and the improper use of Tasers”
As I was conducting research about police brutality I came up with three questions I wanted to find out. I wanted to know what race group is affected by police brutality the most, why they were affected by this the most and what to do to stop police brutality involving shooting civilian. This Paper talk about how police brutality is a major issue in America right now. There’s many different types of police brutality but police officers killing civilians is something that is issue in our nation currently. After doing reaching this topic I was able to find out that African Americans have been affected by this the most out of any race. African Americans are affected by this the most because in some cases African Americans are usually stereotyped and this causes them to be treated different by police. Ways we can help this issue is by supporting these organizations that are against police brutality and encouraging police officers around the nation to always have a body camera on them at all times.
Racial profiling isn’t something new to today’s society. Most recently there were incidents in which the officers were accused of mistreating blacks such as Michael Brown and Freddie Gray. “Racism versus professionalism: claims and counter-claims about racial profiling” written by Vic Satzewich and William Shaffir discusses racism versus professionalism with officers. Their argument is more biased towards the police force and they argue that it’s part of their job. “
Recently in the news, Police have been under scrutiny for brutality, especially against minority citizens. There is no question that police officers face an extremely difficult job that puts them in life-threating situations, with split-second decisions that could be the difference of life and death. With the advent of low cost cameras, especially cell phone cameras, police are under constituent scrutiny. Is police brutality really an issue, or is it just an attempt to undermine our police officers? With American citizens losing their life to police officers, it’s worth a closer look.
Police brutality goes back many decades and actually happens a lot less the it did in the 60’s it is just seems like it occurs more due to the development of social media today. During the Civil Rights Movement that began in 1963 African Americans mostly in the South took the majority of these police brutalities. For example In the 60’s blacks were beaten with batons and cattle prods as they attempted to vote at a court house that was in Selma, Alabama. The subjects that received the beatings were not violent and also unarmed blacks that wanted to vote at a local court house. Attacks by police did not stop there, the police continued to attack unarmed and non-violent blacks as they attempted to march from Selma to Montgomery in the state of Alabama. The rules of deadly force have continued to develop since the introduction of the Constitution. At one point police were even given authority to fire on a fleeing felon even if they were not armed with a weapon. Today 's police officers receive significantly more training so that the violation of civil act’s and excessive uses of force may be prevented, but even with the extra training, police officers still act in this brutal manner. Every police department in America has experienced some type of misconduct, some more than others but not all have experienced a civil rights or police brutality violation. In my opinion, many of these incidents took place because of the lack of training that was provided to these officers. Most

In today’s society, we see all over the news how police officers had shot, killed black people. Its become common to see police brutality all over the news because of this riots have begun to emerge and more and more protest for black lives matter. Law enforcement has had continuous lawsuits many for excessive force officer’s use when arresting a citizen, especially if he or she is of color. Police brutality is the use of any force exceeding that reasonably necessary to accomplish a lawful police purpose. Because of many police brutality towards the people now the police have to hire independent auditors to conduct an investigation when there have been shootings. An independent auditor is typically used to avoid conflicts of interest and to ensure the integrity of performing an audit.
Ever since the late 1700s, when all racial groups started to assimilate into the dominant culture in the United States, the tension between the police and this diversified population has largely been held in check, with a few incidents happening every now and then as a result of racial conflicts (Datesman, Crandall, and Kearny 180). However, in the past few years, the tension between police officers and the black community has become strained due to several high-profile incidents of fatal shootings by police. The acquittals of the police officers involved ultimately added fuel to this heated debate over abuse and misconduct of police (Wexler). To tackle the long-standing
Today in America there has been a growing problem amongst people and the police force. There has been many cases over the past couple of years were the police has used brute force on citizens. The main group of people suffering from police brutality is young African Americans. The young blacks feel that they are being targeted by the police. These cases continue to happen with no signs of stopping anytime soon. The police have been using brute force on black Americans for years now. There was a major that spark awareness on police brutality a couple of years ago. This case was the Trayvon Martin case that stated the whole black lives matter movement. This case was one of the key features to start the black lives matter movement.
Throughout history there has been many confrontational situations between citizens and police officers. Dating back to the 1960s during the civil rights movement, to recent events in the news that demonstrates police brutality. But does this mean that police officers aren’t doing their jobs. Could the media and social networks influence our views of the police? In my opinion it does. Police brutality has circulated media headlines for decades now. Citizens rage through the country, becoming more angry due to the outcome of police officers that use excessive force on victims are not being held accountable for it and walking away free. Studies have shown that police brutality targets more minority groups, such as Latinos and African
Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, and Yvette Smith are only four names out of the hundreds of victims that are affected by police brutality every year. Imagine knowing that your innocent 7 year old child died while sleeping in her own home due to the hands of a policeman during a raid. This is what Charles Jones reality had come to when he had to grieve the loss of his daughter without getting any justice. Currently so far in 2018, 466 people have died in the hands of police. Over the years, the number of deaths due to police brutality have only increased. Surprisingly, this doesn’t come to a shock to many people because police brutality has become more of a common occurrence throughout the years. This needs to come to an end. The police
Police brutality has been around for over 20 years. Police are supposed to protect and serve the people. Some communities don’t feel safe around the higher authority. Majority of the heavy populated black communities are harassed the most by officers. 25% of police officers surveyed stated that they’ve witnessed fellow officers harassing a citizen “most likely because of his/her race.” Los Angeles leads with the highest number of police killings in 2014 over 24 million people been killed, and 16 million of those people were black/ Hispanic Latino.
Police brutality against African Americans was a huge impact in Los Angeles, California in 1991, and continues to be a problematic situation in America today. On March 3, 1991, a group of white LAPD beat Rodney King. After this incident occurred a lot of negative events started to transpire. A lot of African Americans were angry and demanded justice. The relationship between the LAPD and the Los Angeles community in 1991 were horrific and still continues to be awful today. Police brutality just seems to be increasing more overtime, which means the increase in the community not trusting the police. Police brutality can be a huge disadvantage when it comes to community policing.
Police brutality has become a trend as police officers are patronized for the crimes they have committed and remained on the law enforcement after being set free without the family getting justice for they're lost and injured ones. . .along with gun violence and discrimination, Citizens are starting to get out of hand because too many children, fathers, and mothers have died for looking suspicious or “reaching for a weapon.” Most police officers who’ve been associated with police brutalities lately have murdered or put someone’s family member in critical health condition due to the fact that they “ judged them based on their looks and not following protocols”. Discrimination travels a long way from its roots but is very much at home because African Americans are being abused verbally and physically every day. Racism is a major factor and is thrown around with no explicit bar blocking on it to reduce the negativity. Discrimination is the main reason for some police crimes that ended in gun violence with no justice, but one less mouth to feed, mind to corrupt, struggling to pay bills person though….just what the government wants.
Police brutality has always existed within the United States, however, due to new technologic advancements, more news coverage of the brutal incidents are rising. As stated by Cameron Sehat, Esq., police attacks have “always and without exception been perpetrated against poor people and the socially marginalized.” Certain ethnic groups were more highly targeted in history such as African Americans, but now as our economy has developed, more poor whites are becoming victims of police brutality as inequality grows to include more ethnic groups as stated by Sehat. The majority of the victims, although, are still African American and there are more rising ethical concerns. According to Sehat, the rise in the news coverage of police brutality causes Caucasians to become ashamed of their ethnicity due to the harmful actions taking place by their fellow race. They are rueful to the rise of incidents throughout the media displaying a white officer harming an African American citizen of the US. People are beginning to shun officers for the amount of hate they are giving other innocent people.
It isn’t anything out of the ordinary that police brutality and racism go together. For years police brutality has been prominent in most cities of the world, but who is more likely to be subjected to this unnecessary treatment? Social class and colour of ones skin should not affect the treatment that these people endure from the police force; who are supposed to protect and enforce laws, not put unnecessary harm upon people. Events such as the Rodney King beating, Frank Jude, Amadou Diallo, along with many more cases that sometimes go unnoticed; with the power of social media and news outlets incidents with people can be misconstrued and intertwined with “fake” news. The officers involved in these cases are rarely incarcerated due to the power they have obtained in the eyes of the system. What many people don’t see is that there are many actions that can be taken to eliminate police brutality.
