Artists in the early 1900s commonly utilized techniques of distortion and exaggeration, characteristics of expressionism, to establish the element of emotion. According to Wolf (2017), expressionist artists often incorporate “swirling, swaying, and exaggeratedly executed brushstrokes to convey the turgid emotional state of the artist reacting to the anxieties of the modern world” (p. 1). Amplification of the human figure often evokes strong emotions for audiences of many different cultures. Additionally, the style reflects the consequences of urbanization, such as the alienation of individuals in society (Wolf, 2017). Expressionism allows artists to surpass realism and reflect the tribulations of living in a modern society.

Salvador Dali’s painting, La Persistencia de la Memoria (fig. 2), represents the scientific Freudian influence. Everything appears to be in a dream-like state because nothing makes logical sense (Eggener 36). Each clock represents a different time in life, whether it is his past, is current state, or his future. The jagged cracks in the mountains symbolize the rough patches or cracks that one must go through in life and the reflections in the water and platform show how those mistakes reflect who we are. The dead tree shows that eventually we all will grow old and die. Lastly, the white figure is Salvador Dali and how his life is slowly ticking away as well and the eyes are shut because he is reflecting on it in a dream.

It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words, but maybe they are worth far more than that. Pictures, although seemingly simple in nature, are extremely complex. Far too often, people overlook what a picture truly is. When a person looks at an image, they most likely see only the image, nothing else. Many people do not look deep enough into an image to fully comprehend the true meaning of it. However, when an individual begins to truly study an image in an attempt to understand the true complexity of it, they will be surprised at what they overlooked before. As stated by French Realist Painter, Gustave Courbet, “Fine art is knowledge made visible.”

Telling stories and trying to unlock the minds of people through different avenues of artistic labors. Art touches and affects people in unique ways; it can have special or unusual meaning on the person depending on how one views it. Artists’ rendering of their art is interpreted in numerous ways by others who view it unless it is explained by the artist on its meaning giving a clear example of what they are portraying. Salvador Dali’s 1931 painting The Persistence of Memory is a hallmark of the surrealist movement. Dali famously described his paintings as “hand-painted dream photographs” and The Persistence of Memory is a prime example of that description. The Persistence of Memory depicts striking and confusing images of melting pocket watches and a mysterious fetus-like structure all sprawled over the dreamscape representation of Dali’s home of Port Lligat, Spain. Dali uses strange images, color, and shadows in The Persistence of Memory to convey an abstract view on dreams, time, and reality.

He was one of the well-known contemporary artist who implemented comics strips in his artwork such as ‘Hopeless’ a painting which was about his wife’s relationship from the past using abstract expressionism phase. Although, for me, there isn’t only one piece of art I admire, there are still some masterpieces that excite more than many others. The Persistence of Memory, a masterpiece of surrealism, is considered as one of the most famous and important paintings of Salvador Dali based on the book Dali by Dawn Ades (Ades, 148). However, there are much more about this painting than just the creator’s success. So, when contemporary artist, Enrique Chagoya expressed his adoration for the social commentary expressed in Francisco Goya’s Los Caprichos sketches, I was intrigued.

Persistence of Vision Persistence of Vision is when images are displayed at a vest fast speed and our brains cannot keep up with the images so they blend into one and become a moving image. An example of this would be having a ball that displays three different colours at a fast speed; they are changing so fast the ball appears to be purple. But when you swing the ball around the colours will start to show. Persistence of vision is pretty much our minds not being able to keep up with images and they begin to become an animation, this method was founded by Roman poet Lucretius where he claimed it was connected to images he had in a dream.

In the middle of the landscape is a figure that resembles a person who is sleeping, further showing that the painting’s setting is within a dream. As he falls asleep, time has, (quite literally) melted away, as shown by the clock within the paintings that have melted away. On the left hand corner, we’re shown what seems to have been another clock that has turned into a pile of ants, which shows Dalí’s definitive surrealist style. These clocks show that time isn’t of any significance. Within this land, time slips away, and life moves forward. Dalí depicts time here as limitless. While we allow ourselves to be ruled by time, he shows that once we let that guard down (as we do when we are asleep), time becomes nothing but an illusion.

This paper will take a look at Salvador Dali’s painting, The Persistence of Memory, painted in 1931. As the viewer can tell, this is a story of time and life. The memories start in the background where all is well and things are straight and calm. Moving on to the cliff, the observer possibly sees a well-behaved teenager. There is nothing horrible here that leads the spectator to gasp, and the viewer knows this person made it through that time in their life. Then the picture moves on to the age of about twenty, the memories are fond but in the distant past. The memories are protected by a white blanket so that they do not just fall into the background. Then something happened where the person had some
