Teenage romance tends to be really confusing and painful. However, even if it ends badly, it typically does not end in the death of either party. In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, this unfortunately is not the case. Romeo’s love for Juliet ends with both of their suicides. In the prologue to the play, it says “A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life”(Prologue line 6), suggesting that fate determined the deaths of these teenagers. This may be a romantic idea for a play, but this tragic ending likely results from the unwise decisions made by a fourteen year-old boy and a thirteen year-old girl. Romeo and Juliet’s deaths happen due to Romeo’s fickle attraction, Juliet’s submission to his advances, and both of their reactions …show more content…
Moments after seeing her for the first time at the Capulets’ party,, Romeo says “Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight, for I ne’er saw true beauty till this night” (Shakespeare 1.5.59-60). Less than an hour before this, Romeo thinks that he could never love anyone besides Rosaline, and now he forgets about her completely at the sight of Juliet. This kind of a situation should probably caution Romeo that he ought to give it a few days before he decides to profess his undivided love to this girl, but within the next few minutes, Romeo kisses Juliet for the first time, and she kisses him back. Although you might not think at first that this decision will lead to death, let us evaluate the circumstances. In this scene, Romeo’s friends practically drag him into a party. The party is hosted by the Capulets, the mortal enemies of his family. Earlier that day, the two families engage in a fight in the streets, for the third time. A mask disguises Romeo from others identifying him. Under these conditions, it is conceivable that Romeo could make a better choice than kissing the first pretty girl he saw. This decision is the first of many questionable choices made by Romeo which lead to his
The ideology that everything in the universe has a specific place and rank in order of their hierarchy importance created by God is known as the concept of The Great Chain of Being. The order of this concept consisted levels according to highest rank to the lowest accordingly: God, angels, humanity, animals, vegetation life, leading all the way down to crud. Within each category, more specific classification existed, placing these subcategories in a specific order. This concept was believed to be a way to keep the universe in order. As this was believed during Elizabethan times, William Shakespeare also believed in the Great Chain of Being, as many of his plays are prominently based on this concept. Some of his plays include characters that accept their place on the Chain, but others are not so complacent. By examining three different characters from Shakespeare’s tragedies, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, The Tragedy of Macbeth, and The Tragedy of King Lear, it is obvious to readers who is content with their place on the Chain and which characters have a difficult time accepting their place. Romeo and Juliet do not obey their parents’ orders, therefore suffer harsh consequences towards the end of the play. Macbeth is another Shakespearean character that violates the Chain, due to the committing of several murders, in order to gain the throne. In stark contrast, Cordelia, is content with her place on the Chain as she does not want anything greater in life, unlike her

If you take the story from a different perspective and really think through some of the choices that were made leading up to their death you would see that Romeo and Juliet made some foolish decisions that caused their deaths. However, at the party he meets Juliet for the first time, and immediately falls in love with her: “Did my heart love till now? forswear it, sight! / For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night.” Romeo, who was in love with Rosaline until a moment ago, completely forgets about her and is now all focused on Juliet. But what is very surprising is not the fact that he is in love with his enemy’s daughter, the astonishing thing is the speed at which he falls in love with her. Soon, in fact, he and Juliet kiss each other: “Thus from my lips, by yours, my sin is purged.” However, Romeo’s characteristics to love so deeply Juliet is just a symbol of his lacking the capacity of moderation for intense feelings of all kind. Had Romeo stopped himself from being so deeply caught up by Juliet’s beauty, the tragedy would have never happened.
