For my topic, I will be discussing the significance that Zoroastrianism has had in possibly influencing other beliefs seen today, such as Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Throughout many world religions one major element comes into play, the duality of good and evil along with it’s many facets of interpretation. One of the oldest known religions to operate in this manner was Zoroastrianism, a monotheistic theology brought forth by Indo-Iranian/European tribes that emerged near the Caspian Sea (Applegate). Common consensus as to when the religion was founded points to around 2000 BC, subsequently evolving from other known faiths at the time (Applegate). Throughout history, Christianity has shown exactly this. By learning about its history, one can gain an understanding of how it emerged into being one of the most popular religions in the world. Furthermore, better understanding of the religion, both historically and contemporarily, can help dispel any negative preconceived notions about Christianity.
Due to the aforementioned links to modern day religions, several theological notions attributed to them can be found within Zoroastrianism. The Zoroastrian religion is centered around the belief in Ahura Mazda (god of creation, well being, order and light) who was destined for victory against his antithetical counterpart, Angra Mainyu (god of destruction, evil, chaos and darkness), these figures were additionally accompanied by beings associated with angels and demons (Applegate). The five major religions of the world include: Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism are solely based on these ideologies, and ultimately leads to one goal, to follow the path of god, or to seek a euphoric state of salvation. In spite of all the differences among the world’s five major religions, they have very similar ethical constructs, which should encourage more mutual respect among them.
