A Hero is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as "a man admired for his achievements and noble qualities" . This means that a hero is someone people look up to. Anyone can be a hero. Heroes have qualities such as bravery, strength, and selflessness. Mothers, soldiers, and Odysseus are all examples of heroes.

(Encarta, 2009) Joseph Campbell has come up with eight of his own characteristics of a hero. Joseph Campbell is known as a scholar of mythology. There are several people in our times that are considered a hero. Whether, these heroes are fictional or nonfiction, they all portray some kind of heroic abilities.

A Hero, in my opinion, is someone who sets an example, and pulls through the tough times as a leader. They can also defined as someone who expands our sense of possibility (LaBarge). Heroes are chosen by us from the culture they are from and the qualities they have. Some of these qualities include bravery, prowess, loyalty, honor and strength (Jokinen). Epic Heroes, Superheroes, and Personal Heroes are all types of Heroes people in today’s society can connect to.

Caring for others shows of a hero’s personality in a great way. This shows that the hero is looking out for others, and is always kind. Bravery: Being brave can show a great personality in a hero because it shows the hero is bold, and wants to do things people are not capable of doing. Courage: A hero that has courage means that they are determined to do something, and they stick to it.

There are many interpretations of what describes a hero and the actions they take. Whether it's selfless individuals that protect others against harmful entities or powerful figures in costumes that depict moral greatness and power fantasies, everyone has their own vision of what constitutes a hero. Like many of our own thoughts and opinions, these visions often stem from the environment and upbringing of the people that have them. A fantastic example of this aspect of our thoughts is the way George Orwell described a hero. He views a hero as someone who will do whatever they can to change social systems that lack respect for human decency, even if they know it is impossible to create such change.

When one views a hero from a different culture they can form an opinion on what matters to that culture. One will notice that through all these different heroes that they all share common features. Some will think of super powers like flying and saving people from villains; while others have a certain person they know or have heard of that come to mind who have done something to make a difference in the lives of others but who is a hero to you? When I am confronted with these questions I always have the same thoughts; smart, strong will power, and someone who stands up for what they believe is right.

This can often apparent itself in strong but gentle actions planned to increase the lives of others. Courage and bravery come to mind first when we think of heroism. However, it is difficult to achieve anything truly heroic unless one is up against overwhelming chances. As Nelson Mandela put it, "Courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it." These minor acts of heroism rarely attract any notice. A true hero is always sympathetic, benevolent and shows a great deal of compassion and sympathy to those poorly or in agony. He or she keeps away judgements; that are oriented to the self and embraces an attitude that serves others.
