Rulers of European countries during the 17th century had almost unlimited autonomy over their respective countries. They were the head of government in all respects, and all decisions were eventually made by them. However, along with this autonomy came responsibility in the form of the people. Many people have argued that Charles wasn’t to blame, but rather religion or that it was the growth of parliament, however some people believe that there were a number of problems before he began his reign over England, all of which led to the Civil War and Charles’s execution on the 30th January 1649.
Through the media, war was generally perceived to be over in a blink. It was for this reason that Australians thought that they wouldn't be able to contribute to the war. The majority of the successful men were part of the AIF, a separate and purely volunteer army, which showed that young Australian men wanted to fight. Restrictions were also put in place to ensure that the most suitable men went to war. Lots of men were rejected. The restrictions for age were 18-35 yrs. chest measurement of at least 32 inches and a minimum height of 5 ft. 6 inches. (Australian War Memorial, 2013) One source reported that, "Rejected men stumbled in tears from the tables, unable to answer sons or mates left to the fortunes of war." (Ergo, 2012) The loss of 60,000 Australians was justified to a great extent because men decided to fight, despite the
