Amos Elon describes this transition for Jews in his novel The Pity of it All. “For all their irony and skepticism, the Jews of Germany never ceased in their effort to merge German and Jewish identity...their overriding desire was to be complete Germans.” (Elon, 8). The major concerns in Jewish history throughout the ages have been assimilation and acculturation. Hannah’s background as a Holocaust survivor is important for understanding the experience of the Holocaust. Her story provides unique insight on the Holocaust outside of concentration camps, dispels myths, and captivates the emotional aura of living during the Holocaust. Hannah’s story is one of resistance, danger, and the importance of family.

The Holocaust was a time of great suffering and hopelessness for Jewish people. About two thirds of the entire Jewish population was brutally killed. One third of all Jews persevered and survived the appalling events happening in and out of the concentration camps. One boy, out of that one third that survived and pushed through was Elie Wiesel. Elie Wiesel, the holocaust survivor, displays stamina in his memoir physically, mentally, and spiritually.

Germans in the beginning of the Nazi era were campaigning to eliminate any signs of Jewish intellectualism or anti-socialist ideas within the public. Have you ever wondered what it took to be a hero? Elie Wiesel is an example of how you can be one. Wiesel wrote many books to spread the misfortune of the Holocaust. He also taught humanities at Boston University. Before he died he had the honor of being awarded a Nobel Peace Prize, in his efforts to void the world of hate and violence. He impacted the world by keeping the memory of the Holocaust alive but omitting the idea of it. In the end, he helped many see the importance of uniting to overcome something so evil.

Throughout the 1800’s to the mid-1900’s one problem restricted and threatened the Jewish race. Through trials, battles, immigration, and more the jews couldn’t catch a break. They were a despised people suffering due to an inability of the Jewish people to fully assimilate into other societies. This issue highlighted the political and cultural atmosphere and events throughout the time periods we studied. From beneath all the destruction and chaos occurring during this time period lies an important message.

Her story is an example of a person who struggled with adversity but searched for a reason to hope. She has used her remarkable survival as an inspiration for those who have no reason to believe they can overcome struggles. She has a foundation named Citizenship Counts which teaches students about their rights and the importance of their citizenship. She has written many books about her experiences and her belief that hope will help a person overcome darkness. She travels the world today telling people her story to increase their knowledge of the Holocaust. Her story of survival serves of as an inspiration to people who are suffering and are looking for a reason to have hope.¹

The Holocaust was a deadly event that killed millions of Jews in Germany. Nazis would starve, hit, and most times kill them in result of hate against their religion. Elie Wiesel, one of the most famous Holocaust survivors, was just 15 when he began to witness these happening to his friends and family. When Elie became free, he won the Nobel Peace Prize and became an author. He wrote a book about his traumatic experiences while he was in the camps that tortured and abolished Jews. He left his fenced neighborhood called the Ghettos for Auschwitz where he was tortured and put to work. He marched through cold snow and shivered through long nights, trying to stay with his father. After experiencing the trauma of the Holocaust, Elie changed the relationship he had of God and his father.

The Holocaust was the systematic murder and persecution of approximately six million Jews by the Nazi regime and its collaborators during January 1993 through May 1945. The Nazi regime was the political party that emerged in Munich after WWI and was led by Adolf Hitler. The Nazi regime believed that the Jews were an anti-race and destructive to society. By 1945, the Nazi regime and its collaborators killed close to two out of three European Jews which went along with their “Final Solution” (USA Today). The Final Solution was a Nazi code phrase referring to their systematic plan to murder every Jewish man, women and child in Europe. During this time period many men and women stood up for the victims of the Holocaust. These men and women showed moral courage and took a strong stance for these victims despite endangering themselves. A woman who showed a great deal of moral courage during the Holocaust was Irena Sendler.

There had been a series of people who had called my attention through the course. The main reason is because the things they accomplished in their lives and the null knowledge I had about them. These are people who deserve the nickname “heroes.” Among these people Irena Sendler was my favorite. She devoted her life to help save Jewish children lives during War World II. She did so, at the expense of risking her life, but she never gave up not even when she was tortured. Her courage and ideas helped saved numerous lives and that’s the reason I consider her a “Hero” and my favorite person of the course.

During the Holocaust, obstacles in many categories were a commonality shared by many people. The Holocaust is a horrid example of evil in humans. It was one of the most important events in World War II and killed over 11 million people, including Jews, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Roma, the disabled, and homosexuals. Obstacles and how they are overcome are everywhere in Holocaust literature and films, including Eva’s Story, The Book Thief, Paperclips, and The Sneetches.

Many religious conflicts are built from bigotry; however, only few will forever have an imprint on the world’s history. While some may leave a smear on the world’s past, some – like the homicide of Semitic people – may leave a scar. The Holocaust, closely tied to World War II, was a devastating and systematic persecution of millions of Jews by the Nazi regime and allies. Hitler, an anti-Semitic leader of the Nazis, believed that the Jewish race made the Aryan race impure. The Nazis did all in their power to annihilate the followers of Judaism, while the Jews attempted to rebel, rioted against the government, and united as one. Furthermore, the genocide had many social science factors that caused the opposition between the Jews and Nazis.

She was faced with the challenge of being Jewish and living during the holocaust. She had to live in a cramped attic with many people and was forced to eat small rations, get little sunlight, and have no privacy through her childhood. She stayed positive and made the best out of her situation. Many people would have given up and not have fought the fight that she did. She was affected by the Holocaust, but she never let that kill her and she fought for her life to stay alive. After her hiding place was revealed, she was forced to go to a concentration camp. She spent the rest of her short life in that camp, until she died of typhus at the age of 13. She showed courage all throughout her life, when suffering or situations that she was not familiar with came across, she faced them to the fullest. She is a very big role model and she will always be one of the most courageous people in history to
