James Bridger was born to loving parents on March 17, 1804. He was born the son of an innkeeper who loved him dearly. In 1820 Bridger explored the west numerous times. He was the first white man recorded to ever see the amazing Great Salt Lake. During his adventurous life he was a hunter, trapper, Indian fighter, and a guide. At age 13 he was a daring blacksmith apprentice. While he was an apprentice, he learned to handle dangerous machinery, wild horses, and wonderful guns. Since Jim Bridger was shrewd, honest, and brave. He married three times to Native American women. He was outlived all of his three beautiful wives. Bridger sold his beloved Fort Bridger to the Mormons for $8,000. Later as his life went on he was a guide for the U.S forces

Now he and his brother Rezin fought in the war of 1812 in the second division. This division was consolidated of the seventeenth through nineteenth regiments. Which were drawn from Avoyelles, Rapides, and many more well known parishes. It is said, in family records, that Jim and Rezin where on there way to join the famed Andrew jackson and his forces in new orleans when the war came to a peaceful and satisfying close. James Bridger born March 17, 1804 passed away in Missouri on July 17, 1881 at the age of 77 he was one of the last living mountain men. James went by the name of Jim to everyone he knew. Jim was named after his father James Bridger. When Jim was eight his family moved west. Jim was an amazing person he was always so nice and kind to everyone he met. Jim was a very tall man at over 6 feet, he received his tallness from his father that was also very tall.
Then in 1857, he guided Albert Sidney Johnston’s army into his fort, they kicked the Mormons out and the army occupied it until 1890. In 1859, he guided a party down the Bighorn Canyon. The party was sent to observe by the U.S. War Department, under the command of Captain William Raynolds. They observed the Yellowstone and Missouri River County, Bridger was payed $125 a month for this expedition. In 1864, he was hired by the military to lead a trail through Bighorn Valley, to create a new trial that was not risky and unsafe like the Bozeman Trail, his new trail called Bridger trail. In 1866 he was once again working for the army to lead a group to find fort C.F. Smith, he yet again guided people through the Bighorn Canyon, he earned $300 a month for this. The Sioux Indians then attacked them once they had found the fort and started helping the construction, Bridger sent a letter to the army, in the letter it stated “the intention was to attack Fort Philip Kearney first, and if they were successful to attack Fort C.F.

George Armstrong Custer was born on December 5, 1839 in New Rumley, Ohio. He had grown up in Monroe, Michigan and lived a poor lifestyle. After graduating from high school he decided he wanted to go to West Point, although he did not have the the proper qualifications. In 1857, he had entered West Point and graduated in 1861. After graduating, Custer had took on the job of an office, where he had failed to stop a fight between two cadets that had lead him to a court martial. Instead of being punished, he became an officer for the civil war. He was assigned the duty to aide General George McClellan. Soon after he had a calvary assignment and his achievements in war brought to him promotions, He was the youngest brevet brigadier general in the Union army.
First, I believe that the background of the author Henry James is very important. Since he had lived a privileged life and never married, I see that the character of John Marcher resembles the author's personality traits and perception of revealing emotion. Essentially, Marcher is closed off to pursing a relationship with May Bartrum, a confident lady who is hopeful for a romantic relationship with Marcher. I initially thought that Marcher would eventually overcome his fear of releasing his emotion, and commit to May since he felt an attraction to her: "Marcher flattered himself in the illumination was brilliant, yet he was really still more pleased on her showing him with amusement, that in his haste to make everything right he had got most things rather wrong" (469). The personalities of these two people have a push and pull factor, and I think that they would make a great balance. I also admire the straight-forward approach May has when it comes to the pursuit of love. I must say that the story was frustrating for me to read, but I understand where May is coming from due to personal experience. I relate to May because she knows what she wants, and that is why she pushes Marcher to confess his feelings and be with her. I think that Marcher is not intentionally playing hard-to-get, however, May sees him as a challenge and wishes to crack his shell. In class, I stated this theory of feeling more reward for completion of a difficult task and how it relates to getting the
