The American Revolution was a war of principles fought by Loyalists and Patriots. However, Loyalists believed in neutrality, peace, and no brutality or treason. Therefore, Patriots believed in freedom of religion, the right to bear arms, and the right to break away from the British government. In the novel My Brother Sam is Dead created by James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier, a family disputes over which side is right. James and Christopher Collier use the ironies of Life, Jerry, and Sam's death to induce Tim's decision of neutrality.
Sam is a scapegoat, who’s accused by two other Patriot, to be killed for stealing cattles. Even though Tim convince General Putnam that Sam is innocent, the General would still execute Sam because it will serve as an example for others even if he didn’t actually break the rules. Sam has to die because Putnam thinks that “it doesn’t matter very much who he executes to do it. So many men have died… [and] he is thinking that in the long run if he executes somebody, he’ll shorten the war and save more lives.”
Sam patch can be recognized as one of America's famous who took a leap of faith to showcase his feelings for the revolution. He was not famous from wealth, but he was famous from jumping off waterfalls – taking a stand against labor laws and how others were treated. Child labor laws are not enforced during the 18 hundreds and were stripping the kids of their education by the unruly hours they worked. Sam had a first-hand experience with the child labor laws not being enforced from working with his family and being in the mills. If you pay attention to details of what is going on during this time, you can see that Sam is correct in his doings and by taking the stands he's actually promoting the poor to do better just what the middle class people don't want them to do. Sam patch represents the people and how they should assure themselves long with being stronger in their communities.
“You have killed my two brothers, and now I’ve got you.” (Watkins and Inge 134) Samuel Watkins, a Rebel soldier in the Civil War, heard these words from a Yankee soldier right after he shot two others dead. Watkins heard a bang, felt the gun shoot, and saw his great friend, William A. Hughes, another Rebel soldier, grab the gun and take the bullet in his stead. Watkins watched as his dying friend was taken off of the battlefield by infirmary corps, never to be seen again. (Watkins and Inge 133-4) This heart-wrenching scene is just one example of Sam Watkins’ experience as a Rebel soldier in the Civil War. He was influenced by many instances such as this, however the three aspects of the war that had the greatest impact on him were his comrades, the battles he participated in, and the horrific injuries and deaths he witnessed.
The American Revolution was a war of principles, fought among the Loyalist and the Patriots. For example, the Loyalists are against losing their fortune, chaos, mob rule, eschewing treason, and the brutality of the perfidious war. Moreover, the Patriots believe in the liberation of verbalization, the liberation of religion, the liberation from tyranny, and liberate from taxes. In the novel, My Brother Sam Is Dead, a family struggles with the cull of being a Loyalist or a Patriot. War is gloomy because of the iniquity of Life, Jerry, and Sam’s Death, all of which induces Tim to be unaligned with the Loyalist and Patriots.
Sam Houston was an extraordinary man in our history. He defended what he accepted was useful for the Union not the North or the South. At the point when Sam was censured for giving the triumphant edge to his rivals he said "I know neither North nor South; I know just the Union." He additionally said everybody "… must stand firm to the Union, paying little heed to every individual outcome." He was savagely yearning, yet toward the end he relinquished for standard all he had ever won or needed. He was a Southerner, but then he relentlessly kept up his devotion to the Union. He could be all things to all men—but, when confronted with his most noteworthy test, he was dedicated to himself and to

British. Patriots. Those two sides were the talk of the colonies for more than four years. The colonists (also called the Patriots) were the rebellious group and were completely in favor for the violent, raging war. Supporters of the King were called the Loyalists or Redcoats, and this specific side was against the crazy war. The book written by Collier and Collier is a well-represented book that shows the amount of patriotism that each person from either side had. Although throughout My Brother Sam is Dead there is an obvious show of side of the characters, the side the author’s chose is not directly stated. Since there is not any direct statement telling us which side they are, readers can use context clues and the themes to find out. Through a lot of evidence, I believe that in My Brother Sam is Dead , although both sides of war are shown, authors Collier and Collier ultimately argue that war is worthless and futile.
In the Spring of 1775 Tim's brother Sam returns home from college. When asked about his trip, his response was criticized as Sam was patriot unlike his Father. Sam got into an heated argument that night he came back. The following day, Sam told Tim about his plan to steal the only gun his family had. Tim is also questioned about what side of the war he supports. Tim has great difficulty picking a side to support, and ultimately doesn't answer. Sam soon leaves home, to fight in the war. After several months, Tim was notified by Betsy that Sam had came back. Not long after rebel soldiers come into the house demanding for the gun, which Sam has (as they soon figured out).
