“Who Framed Roger Rabbit” was a unique live action meets comedy film created in the 1980’s. The film featured the comedy duo of Bob Hoskins, acting as the straight man Eddie Valiant, and the voice of Charles Fleischer as his wacky sidekick, Roger Rabbit. Throughout the film we are introduce to a variety of contrasting themes, encapsulated by the mise en scene, which is divided between a seedy and dark depiction of 1980’s Los Angeles and the bright and colorful “Toon Town”. These disparities in scene eventually highlight the underlying issues regarding both of the cities, as the cruelties of realism and the whims of fiction clash, ultimately creating a sense of oppression warded off by flimsy escapism. The discrepancies between the individual inhabitants with the contrasting individual background helps to set up a backdrop of power and exploitation, as Toons are imported from their colorful neighborhood to the darker side of show business, to which Toons are eventually discarded as they lose their appeal. To firmly illustrate this, the film features a cameo of a black and white Betty Boop, working in a sordid bar, providing drinks as other Toons, which are other notable cameos like Donald and Daffy Duck, berate themselves for the amusement of onlookers. Though colorful, the Toons seem to live a depressed life in the world of reality, avoiding the cruelty of their situation by mere hope that it will one day get better. Despite the fact that they are very different stories, Of Mice and Men and What's Eating Gilbert Grape can be seen as parallel when analyzing the characters of George and Gilbert, Arnie and Lennie, and other similarities the stories share.
What’s Eating Gilbert Grape is based in a small town named Endora in 1993. This film presents the lives of the members in the Grape’s family as they develop and cope with daily tasks. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the mental development of each member in Grape’s family along with the people who they interact with in Endora. Developmental theories are then used to connect with the developmental themes in the film to obtain an integrated understanding of Grapes’ lives.

While the film editing in this film was revolutionary to the entire industry, that isn’t what viewers remember. According to the book, Film Art, “Many of our most vivid memories of movies stem from mise-en-scene.” In this film, the mise-en-scene is an important as that quote suggests. It is responsible for a variety of the most essential aspects of the movie. In Lasse Hallström’s film, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?, the struggles of living with a mental illness is displayed through Arnie Grape, the protagonist’s younger brother. Grape’s disability is never discussed in the movie, as the movie focuses on Gilbert Grape, the principal character, and his struggles with life and family responsibilities. With the use of various resources, such as a psychology textbook (Lilienfeld 2014), credible health associations’ websites, and The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder (DMS-5), one is capable of analyzing the nature of Arnie’s disorder and make a valid assumption that he is dealing with a mental illness: autism. Autism is a spectrum disorder characterized by “various degrees in difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors” ("Learning About Autism," n.d.). It becomes clear, through Arnie Grape’s social and cognitive impairment, that he has Autism, despite the fact that the film does not clearly state that he has a mental illness.

Development and adaptation of the western genre has occurred throughout the twentieth century in relation to the shift in context, this is still relevant. Stereotypes of a western genre and the context are determined by the time in which the film is being produced. The time in which they were produced determine how social construction, gender ideas, values and attitudes, the setting and SWAT codes are demonstrated. Confronting the chaos caused by Tom arbitrarily leaving the screen, Gil Shepard, an actor who impersonates Tom, comes to persuade Tom to return to the film, while pursuing Cecilia at the same time. In the end, Cecilia chooses to stay in reality but ends up alone due to Gil abandoning her for his career in Hollywood.
The movie I chose for this paper is titled Frankie & Alice. The main character, played by Halle Berry, was named Frankie. Frankie had a history of traumatic events that took place as she was growing up which resulted in her being diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder. Frankie was unaware that she had any type of disorder until she was picked up by police and chose to receive treatment instead of going to jail. The paper includes a synopsis of the movie, along with an analysis of the symptoms Frankie’s character experienced to lead to her diagnosis. Also included are evidences about dissociative identity disorder and what may lead to its diagnoses in an individual. Prevalence of the diagnoses along with treatment selections for the diagnoses is also discussed.

The film ‘Boy’ (2010) uses a range of techniques to construct an effective mise-en-scene. Taika Waititi (director) has been able to create aesthetically pleasing scenes to communicate to the audience about the setting, characters, story and themes. The sequence at the beginning of the film is an appropriate example of the good use of mise-en-scene.
Director Alfonso Cuarón’s 2006 film Children of Men paints a disheartening picture of the future: a prolonged period of worldwide infertility has led to the near collapse of society by the year 2027. The essence of the film is chilling, undoubtedly due to Cuarón’s attention to detail in designing this dystopian society. His meticulousness lends the film a sense of authenticity and makes its story even more compelling. An element of film style that Cuarón uses to achieve this believability is mise-en-scene. Mise-en-scene consists of all of the elements that are placed in front of the camera and appear in the frame. Four categories that exist within the broad scope of mise-en-scene are setting and props, lighting, costume and makeup, and staging and acting. A filmmaker can manipulate the elements of mise-en-scene in many different ways, and these decisions have a significant impact on the film as a whole. In this particular scene Children of Men, Cuarón uses the first two categories, setting and props and lighting, particularly effectively. He uses these two categories of mise-en-scene in order to depict a believable dystopian future and to highlight the hopelessness that plagues the characters in this world.
