Many people have to hide or keep a secret throughout their lives. In “Among the Hidden,” by Margaret Peterson Haddix, the main character, Luke Garner, has to stay hidden from everyone. In the beginning, Luke is an illegal child who follows every order to hide. Then, Luke sneaks out of the house and meets another illegal child who introduces him into the world. Finally, Luke has to take on a new identity and leave his old life behind. In, “Among the Hidden,” Luke is a dynamic character whose personality changes a lot throughout the story. Luke is a dynamic character because Luke becomes a disobedient child. He also becomes distant from his family. Lastly, he matures.
Luke is now a disobedient child. Luke was extremely obedient to his mother and father, not even questioning why he has all of the rules and why he has to hide. “He had never disobeyed the order to hide… But on this day, the day they began taking the woods away, he hesitated… He turned and walked into the house, as silently as a shadow.” (Haddix 1). Luke enjoys his woods, he loves them, but when his mom orders him to hide, he goes inside. After six months cooped up in his house, Luke starts to create a secret plan to run

Luke used to be childish but now he has grown up and learned how to be responsible. “Luke lay on his stomach on the floor and idly ran the toy train back and forth.” (Haddix 12). Luke is just laying on the floor playing with a toy train without doing much. He could be asking questions or reading but instead he’s doing this. After learning the truth behind who he is and the government, Luke changes to be mature. “Lee Grant turned around to see what lay ahead.” (Haddix 153). Luke has adopted the new identity of Lee Grant and he’s ready to throw his old life away to help save the illegal children all over the country. Luke grows up from being a boy to a young man. He starts to value others lives before his and becomes more aware of the
He is considered their symbol of strength and shows the prisoners that they don’t have to live in fear. Like McMurphy, he constantly stands up against the guards and refuses to be broken. On multiple accounts, he escapes the prison grounds and is beaten and put into the box, and he never breaks. The other prisoners see this as a ray of hope that they won’t have to like under such harsh conditions. Then after his second attempted escape, Luke finally breaks, and this is when the other prisoners lose hope and respect for Luke.
Luke is broken, but is not yet ready to give up, as he escapes one last time. Luke runs away and escapes into an old church, launching into a soliloquy asking God for guidance. God’s answer comes in the form of desertion as the police encircle the church. Luke realizes that he’s a goner no matter what, so he approaches a window and shouts the famous line “what we have here is a failure to communicate.” In return for his final act of defiance he gets a fatal shot in the throat. Remaining defiant to the end is an expected characteristic of Luke’s courageous nature.
Luke Skywalker chooses to join Obi Wan Kenobi, and through their journey Luke was changed from a parentless boy to a Jedi in training (Star Wars IV). One of the biggest parts in a Hero’s Journey is the life changing event that causes the hero to leave his home in the first place. When Luke’s aunt and uncle are killed, he is alone and has no reason to stay on his home planet of Tatooine so goes with Obi Wan. He changes his whole life around in a very short period of time, like his master, all he has left is his training. Both Romeo and Juliet changed their lives around for each other, even though it resulted in death (Shakespeare). The feuding families could never know about their children’s relationship because they hadn’t adjusted to the idea of ending their fighting and still hated each other. Romeo went first and Juliet followed behind and the death toll went up, if the families had changed their views toward each other , no one would have lost their lives. Those who are open to change, will be introduced to many life altering
Imagine a society in which the main law is the population law. In the novel “Among the Hidden” by Margaret Peterson Haddix, the population law determines that a family may only consist of four people. But in the Garner’s house they didn’t play by the rules, instead they had a third child, Luke. He hides and lives in the attic. But when the “population police” arrive Luke hides in the basement.
Luke’s goal was to challenge the establishment (to which he seemed to think was unjust) and make an example of hope for his fellow men in that they wouldn’t have to bow down to Dragline. Interestingly enough, after this fight, Dragline becomes acquainted with Luke and becomes very friendly.
There are multiple characters in Among the Hidden and each has a unique personality. Luke, the protagonist, is scared, small, curious and the third child in his family. Mr. Garner, Luke’s dad, is a farmer who is stern, hardworking and cautious. Mrs. Garner, Luke’s mom, is gentle, caring and
In just the course of A New Hope, Luke’s character changes immensely. The critical incident that sparks a change of his
She had gathered about 40 other third children to come, but they had all gotten shot by government officials (p. ). Before Luke found out that Jen had died, he had snuck into her house like he usually did for their secret meetings. The alarm went off and he disabled it like Jen had taught him to. Once he got into the third children chat room that Jen had created, the front door to the house burst open and Jen’s dad stepped in. Jen’s dad, Luke later found out, worked for the population police (p. ), the people that, without prior notice, barge into people’s houses and make sure there are no illegal third children living there. He was on the third children’s side, though. He offered to get Luke a fake I.D. and send him to a boarding school for boys, and Luke accepted. I felt really sorry for Luke because he would never be able to see his family again. The people who had raised Luke would never be in his life again. Luke probably missed his mother especially, because she was the one that would always sit down with Luke in the attic and talk to him and comfort him. Also, the day he was going to the school, Luke’s mother had made him two eggs for breakfast, which she had to work 40 extra hours for in the factory (p. ).
In the film Cool Hand Luke, the director Stuart Rosenberg used many different techniques to make the main character, Luke Jackson ( Paul Newman) appear like a savior. This was a quick turn in the plot of the film considering the first scene that opens up with Luke intoxicated as he is carelessly removing the tops of parking meters. After this scene then the true theme of the movie begins to come into play. Soon after Luke removes the top of a parking meter, two police officers show up and arrest him. He ends up being put in a prison and sentenced to two years. As soon as Luke arrived at the prison he was looked down upon. This was until he showed everyone, prisoners and officers alike that he did not intend on allowing anyone to tell him what to do. The prisoners began to change their view of Luke as they looked up to him, but the officers grew more dislike for him because they
How does fear and moral and emotions stop you from accomplishing your goals? Looking back at Cool Hand Luke situation, he really lets his behavior interfere with life. But, on the other hand he really doesn’t. Luke really just talks back to his boss and workers. He just doesnt know how to react to those emotions and how to let them out. Later in the movie, Lukes mom dies and so his partners gave him so much respect for that. They all left the room for him to grieve. Than the boss’s worker locked him into the box because his mom died for a reason I don’t understand but its probably cause he didn’t know to react and give him the affection that Luke needed. Days passed and they let Luke out. Thats when everything changed for Luke. He had looked things differently like he really took in what his mother told him before she had passed away. Thats when he began to really act out. He tried to leave the place. He
In the movie Cool Hand Luke, Luke Jackson (Paul Newman) is arrested for cutting the heads off the town’s parking meters. His punishment seems extreme, as he is sentenced to two years on a chain gang at a Florida prison. Although Luke received several decorations in the war, including the silver star, he never rises above a private in the Army. This suggests perhaps he has a resentment for those in authority.
In the movie Cool Hand Luke, Luke is punished and put in a wooden box for his mother passing away. He didn’t show any signs of running away or violence; so therefore, there was no reason for him to be punished. After that, Luke started misbehaving and ran away over and over. Another view of this is in Antigone; when Antigone is punished for burying her brother out of love because her uncle didn’t. She got punished and locked away in a rock jail. She ended up killing herself. Soon after her uncle's son; which was her lover; found her body and killed himself for what his father did.
Heroes are seen all around us, in life, literature, and movies. Heroes like Superman, Captain America, and Thor are common, but have you ever thought of Luke Skywalker as an archetypal hero? Luke Skywalker is an aspiring young Jedi Knight, who is called to the quest of defeating the empire in the movie Star Wars IV: A New Hope, written and directed by George Lucas. Luke Skywalker demonstrates certain characteristics before, during, and after his quest that makes him an archetypal hero.
Before Luke came around Dragline played the role of the boss beneath the bosses. He would keep people in line, resulting in him and the guards having an unspoken understanding. He conforms to rules and standards he is expected to and the other inmates follow suit. This shows when the new inmates (including Luke) showed up, and one of them gets scammed into buying a “better job” that does not exist. He tells the boss he made a deal with the inmate only to find out it wasn’t real and gets a night in “the box.” Dragline believes he deserved it, stating “he back-sassed a free man, they got their rules and we ain't got nothing to do with that. He gotta learn the rules the same as anybody else.” (Rosenberg, Caroll, 1967). These are the type of situations that have given Dragline the type of power he possess. If he complies with what his authorities tell him to, he himself will gain some sort of power over people beneath
