Thompson 1 Aurora Thompson Ms. Younghouse The Metamorphosis Writing Assignment 29 August 2014 Throughout The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, a myriad of transformations occur within the main character, Gregor, as well as those around him. Gregor Samsa, himself, endures many transformations throughout the novella; however, so do his sister, father, and mother. This story illustrates an insight that a change within yourself doesn't affect only you. "As Gregor [Samsa] awoke from unsettling dreams one morning, he found himself transformed in his bed into a monstrous vermin" (Kafka, 1). Gregor's most obvious change was his transformation from a business man to a bug. Since it is an external change, discovering the change was not limited to only him. Due to his new appearance and inability to work, Gregor was, so to speak, shunned by his family because he couldn't provide for them any longer. The Samsa family did not recognize Gregor for his internal self, but mistook him for a useless bug. Eventually, no one even takes care of Gregor, yet he forgives and loves them. Gregor hides himself under a sheet, and she throws him a grateful look" (12). Grete, Gregor's sister, went off the deep end with Gregor- she lost all patience. She used to lay out food scraps for her brother, but now she can not stand the sight of him! The young Samsa girl would be very attentive to Gregor, she would feed him, and she would even clean his room for him. But, as time went on, Gregor's needs became a burden to Grete. In the story, she does get a job to help raise her family income. Supposedly, this is to signify that Grete has matured into a young woman with her priorites
