Have you ever started flipping through your channels on television and there was a WNBA game on ESPN? Most likely, but did you stop and watch it, Probably not. Have you ever skipped through the channels and saw a NBA game on? You probably didn't watch the game. WNBA mean Women's National Basketball Association. Its a professional basketball association regarding females only. It was founded on April 24,1996. The NBA is the National Basketball Association, meaning that only males. The basketball league is unfair, because the NBA gets to play 26 different teams during their season but the WNBA only gets to play 12 different teams. If someone had tickets to a NBA game to see The Santa Cruz Warriors vs. the South Bay Lakers, or WNBA tickets to see the New York Liberty vs. the Portland Fire you would most …show more content…
In men's national soccer team the salary that the all famous Cristiano Ronaldo made was around $58 million, and Lionel Messi madde around $53 million. The most a woman soccer player can make is no more than $400,000 a year. The capped salary for men's soccer is around $3 million. Are the head leaders of the Women's Professional Soccer League, or any league being sexist toward women? When it comes to professional sports women are treated unfairly. In basketball, softball/ baseball, golf, lacrosse, and hockey professional leagues females are grossing all underpaid, and not to mention it, but there is no professional football leaguefor feamales, its only a amuatur league. The only sport that comes close to getting paid the same by men and women is tennis, and there is about a $35 million difference. Serena Williams is the highest paid female athlete in america. She makes $27 million just off playing tennis. Roger Federer is the highest paid tennis player $67 million. At the end of the day $27 million is a lot of money, but if I am earning $35 million less than someone just because I am a female I would be
In today's society women are able to become anything they wish. Generations ago women did not have the privilege to become what they truly desired compared to the women of today. Although women can become anything they desire, they cannot succeed financially. Women are still underpaid in many areas, especially in Pro Sports. The disparity in pay for women compared men's pro sports is absurd. Female athletes have also seen greater success in sports as well and have been belittled and condemned of the rewards they rightfully deserve for the achievements in their sports. It is simple, gender should not define pay in pro sports, especially if they both have equal to or greater success in their respected sports.
“We Got Next”. This phrase is most commonly used around the asphalt when vying to play the next game of pick up basketball. Founded on April 24, 1996, the NBA Board of Governors approved the concept of a Women’s National Basketball Association. The Women’s National Basketball Association is the most prevalently known professional basketball league in the United States for women, most commonly referred to as its’ acronym WNBA. It was finally the ladies’ turn as they made their statement that they would be playing the next game. The first season for the Women’s National Basketball Association began in 1997. Sheryl Swoopes, one of the league’s first sixteen players, was the first player signed by the WNBA on October 23, 1996. She signed with the Houston Comets, one of the eight teams in the
People all over America and the world are consumed with watching athletes perform in their various sports. Both male and female athletes compete at such incredible levels that require physical talent and drive. Professional athletes are known to get paid salaries that reflect their talent and abilities. Regardless of gender, professional athletes are drafted to receive professional pay. However, equal pay for male and female athletes with the same credentials does not occur today. There is a belief that male athletes are worth more than female athletes and are better at promoting themselves. Also, women salaries are lower because of their gender and are not
People all around, especially sport fans, have their own opinions as to why the differences exist and whether or not they should be changed. Over the years, the United States has experienced dramatic changes in pay equality between men and women in the work force. Why can we not implement that same change in the sports world? Some of the questions that are presented with such an issue can be compared to how the United States has made changes and how the sports world fails to push for these changes. Many years ago a question like this would not even be up for discussion. There are many other countries around the world that face the same issue with women sports equality versus men that are far worse than what happens in the U.S. The world of sports has begun to see how women's sports can be just as interesting and exciting as men's sports can be.
Lopiano complains that there’s too much of a salaries gap between man and women playing the same sports. “The right to play has been established. However, the issue that has been confronted is the barrier to being treated equally when it comes to money” (Lopiano 1). Most people will say women’s tennis matches are more exciting than men’s matches; men’s victory purses are still considerably higher than women’s victory purses. Top women tennis players earned 59 cents for every dollar earned by their male counterparts. The average total purse was $63,031,000.00 for top men players and $41,000,000.00 for top women players (Daniel Frankl 2). In soccer, the Women’s World Cup soccer team was promised $12,500 if they won compared to the $300,000 male players were to receive. The payout for women players was increased to $50,000 because fans protested the unfair payout gap between the male and female players (Lopiano 1); it’s still 1/6 the payout
Many women professional basketball players work hard, are dedicated, and have a genuine love for the game; however, many of them are very underpaid when compared to the men professional basketball players. The difference between what men and women are paid for the same job is referred to as the gender wage gap. In the United States that gap is 78 cents, so a woman is paid 78 cents for every dollar paid to a man doing the same work. Lynx player Maya Moore said, "We’re not super rich like the guys … but money’s not everything when you’re talking about dynasties and legacies, and inspiring young women and men, and opening people’s minds." Obviously, they do not play for the money, they play because they love the game of basketball. The women basketball players work really hard and inspire more people everyday. They should be awarded and paid the equal amount just as any male basketball player.
The WNBA and NBA both have salary wages but are they of equal pay? NBA players make way more money than a WNBA player. It shouldn’t matter about gender. The NBA makes , more money at a single game so they can afford a higher budget to pay the athletes more money. They make more money due to an higher popularity rate than a women’s game. “An average NBA athlete makes 5.15 million dollars a year and the NBA itself makes up to five billion dollars a season.” ("Gender, 2014) That’s a lot of money compared to what the WNBA accounts for in a year.
The US women’s soccer team are only paid about a fourth of what the men are paid, even though they actually preform at a level well above that of the men’s, and create more income for the corporation; In fact, the women’s soccer team made approximately $20 million more money in revenue than the men’s soccer team ("U.S. Women's Team Files Wage-discrimination Action vs. U.S. Soccer"). Another instance of the men’s team earning more money than the women’s team unfairly is that the women were only paid $2 million dollars total when they won the world cup in 2015, while the men’s team (who got to round 16 before they lost) were paid a total of $9 million dollars ("U.S. Women's Team Files Wage-discrimination Action vs. U.S. Soccer"). That means that the women’s team was paid approximately 22% of what the men’s team was being paid, creating a wage gap that is even larger than what the one from the 1960’s. If you go by the logic of paying someone based on the worker’s effort and skill, as it is stated in the Equal Pay Act, than the women’s team should be paid significantly more than the men’s team, not the other way
Yes, it does depend on how well you do your job and how long you have been doing it, but it should not be based on gender. In the article “Pay Equity & Discrimination” it states, “ Women continue to earn considerably less than men. Female full-time, year-round workers made only 80 cents for every dollar earned by men, a gender wage gap of 20 percent.” This shows that men are paid more than women in a lot of jobs, including basketball. Basketball is the largest difference in pay that I have ever seen. Basketball has two leagues, the WNBA and NBA. NBA is the National Basketball Association, and the WNBA is the Women's National Basketball Association. This divides women and men’s teams, and who they play. Overall, they are playing the same sport, so they deserve to be paid the same. Another example is stated in the article “Difference Between Men’s and Women’s Basketball” by Steve Silverman when it says, “ There are quite a few differences between men's and women's basketball, many of which have to do with the rules. They also include the style of play as well as its overall popularity. ” Basically they are basing the pay off of gender. The style of play might not be the same, but this should not have to do with how they pay. So paying them off of the style between the men and women is how it should be decided? I don't think that it is a good idea to have the pay this way because it could get people upset with the league, and the
On April 24, 1996, women’s basketball announced “We Got Next” as the NBA Board of Governors approved the concept of a Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) to begin in June 1997. Since that day in 1996 there have been many firsts for the WNBA: Val Ackerman -- the first president of the WNBA; Sheryl Swoopes -- the first player signed to the WNBA; Cynthia Cooper -- the league’s first Most Valuable Player; the Houston Comets -- the first WNBA Champions; Lisa Leslie -- the first WNBA player to capture all three MVP awards (regular season, All-Star and Championship) in one season.
The WNBA is the organization for the women’s basketball program. In this organization, women are thought to be less athletic because they cannot dunk. The WNBA was founded on April 24, 1996. There are two hundred eighty-eights split into twelve teams in this league. Women teams play in NBA cities and wear uniforms derived from their NBA counterparts. Their season lasts from June to September and consists of 34 games. Laurel J. Richie is the President of the WNBA. Their TV partners are ABC,ESPN,and
The pay in both the professional women's soccer team and the professional men's soccer team is very unequal. The players on the women's team get paid nearly a fourth less which is very surprising considering how good they are. Both teams play the same game do the same sport and represent the same team so why aren't they payed the same? I believe the women's team should be paid the same as the men's or even more because of their amazing results.
The Women’s National Basketball Association, more commonly known as the WNBA, is a professional basketball league consisting of 12 teams spanning across the United States. The league was founded in 1996 but didn’t officially kick off until 1997. While it’s not the first major women’s professional basketball league in the United States, the WNBA is the only league that has received full backing from the National Basketball Association, more commonly, the NBA. Now in its 20th season under the direction of league president Lisa Borders, the regular season is played from June to September with the playoffs spanning through the remainder of September into the middle of October. Although they have the full backing from the NBA, there are still a few discrepancies between the two leagues. Even though WNBA games are not as exciting as NBA games, the players of the WNBA deserve equal pay because the team mindset makes the game more challenging, players continue to show their hard work in the offseason by playing overseas, and they inspire young girls by providing for charities as a result of their work.
The gender wage gap in professional sports is much higher than most people think and it’s not going to end anytime soon. Women make half of what the Men make, if not less. In the NBA, the average salary is $4,500,000.00 and in the WNBA the average salary is $72,000.00. In the professional basketball aspect, WNBA players earn 4,428,000.00 less, or not even 2 percent of what NBA players earn. In the 2014-15 NBA season, the highest paid athlete, Kobe Bryant, made $23,500,000.00 and in 2013, the highest paid WNBA player was only paid 107,000.00, but that salary can only be reached after so many years of playing in the league (a-look-at).
We are going to talk about the differences about the National Basketball Association and the Woman National Basketball Association. Because right now the popularity on the WNBA is known than the NBA, mainly because of the excitement of the NBA brings to the fans is a lot more entertaining than the WNBA, obviously because in the NBA have more money to pay their players and to have nice venue. An interview on ESPN said that an NBA game draws over double the attendance of a WNBA game, which means that there will be more ticket sales as well as merchandise sales and endorsements. This means that owners of WNBA teams are making much less money
