Who’s to blame? In William Shakespeare’s tragedy Romeo and Juliet, two teens from feuding families fall in love and get married, but can’t be together because Romeo got banished from their city after killing Juliet's cousin, while Juliet’s parents arrange for Juliet to get married to another man. With the help of Friar Lawrence, Juliet fakes her own death, leading Romeo to suicide because of his lack of knowledge of this plan, followed by Juliet’s suicide after seeing the late Romeo. It seems as though fate keeps two star-crossed lovers apart time and time after, but in reality, certain people the two star-crossed lovers’ lives were the ones to push Romeo and Juliet off the cliff and into tragedy. The people who drove these star-crossed lovers to their deaths were Capulet, Lady Capulet and Friar Lawrence. Capulet should be blamed for the deaths of his daughter Juliet and her husband Romeo. Capulet has been feuding with the Montagues and absolutely despises them. His hatred for the family is a factor that made it important for Juliet and Romeo to keep their relationship a secret, which led her to faking her own death to be with him, which eventually led to both their downfalls. His hatred for the Montagues are shown throughout the book, such as when he says “‘My sword, I say! Old Montague is come/And flourishes his blade in spite of me.’” (1.1.75-76) In an attempt to improve the solemn situation after Tybalt’s death, Capulet approves and encourages giving Juliet’s hand to Paris without giving Juliet any say. Capulet, the father of the victim Juliet, played a role in Romeo and Juliet’s death because of his hatred for Romeo’s family, which made it necessary for the lovers to keep their relationship a secret and that kept them apart. Capulet arranges for Paris to marry his already married daughter and causes Juliet to take desperate measures as he wrongly threatens to end his relationship with her if she decides to disobey. Lady Capulet led the two to their deaths as she pressures Juliet in marrying Paris whom she doesn’t love and when she turns her back on Juliet at a desperate time like a bad mother because Juliet opposes the idea of the marriage. Lady Capulet also expresses her hatred and death wishes upon Romeo, emphasizing the need for secrecy in their relationship, and prohibiting Juliet to be with Romeo. Friar Lawrence starts the chain of problems as he decides to marry Romeo and Juliet, though their relationship was doomed to not last because of their families conflict. He provides Juliet with a potion and a dysfunctioning plan, which later did not work and instead ended their lives. He made the bad decision of leaving Juliet alone in the tomb after her husband's death, allowing her to freely take her own life.
