As humans we like to think of ourselves as superior to animals. We regard ourselves as the most intelligent and civilized out of all creatures, but research has proven that animals are far smarter than we think. Indeed there are many ways in which animals are actually more human than we are. It is often thought that animals are emotionless and unable to express how they feel. Contrary to what we may believe, animals can be incredibly smart. We refuse to accept that animals can complete tasks and learn things that we once thought were unique to humans. Dolphins, for example, have the second most complex brain after humans; this makes them the next brightest animal. Just like humans, dolphins are able to form communities and the young of this species rely completely on their parents throughout their ‘childhood’. They are aware of who they are and they are capable of thinking about the future. Research has been conducted where dolphins are trained to remove rubbish from their pools. In this experiment dolphins have been known to hoard the rubbish underneath a rock at the bottom of the pool instead of handing all of in at once, in order to receive several fish. This proves that dolphins are able to plan for the future by storing their food. Dolphins are also able to pick up new types of behaviour from other dolphins. This is similar to humans copying behaviour they see from their friends or family. In light of this discovery, there has been controversy over keeping dolphins in captivity. ‘Seaworld’, an aquatic themed amusement park has taken many dolphins and orcas from their natural habitat and confined them to inadequately sized tanks for entertainment and money.
