Why Are Dress Codes Important

Dress code is administration telling us what we can and cannot wear. Some people believe we should wear uniform, because there's less judgment on what people wear and it's easier to choose what you're wearing in the morning before school. Some people also believe there should be no dress code so students can express their selves and be in the comfort of what they chose to wear. In 2016 at Cy-Fair high school we have a very strict dress code. Cy-Fairs dress code is very bias. I think we should have a dress code but students should not be able to wear super revealing clothing. Student should be able to wear what they want to express themselves and shouldn't be told what they can and cannot wear just because it "distracts" others.

Dress code is put into place to keep students from being bullied for how they dress and how some people may treat them different depending on what they wear. There is a lot of evidence that show students losing time in the class room because they are too worried about there personal apparel. David Brunsma, a sociologist who wrote Uniforms in Public Schools: A Decade of Research and Debate in 2005, says,

When it comes to dress code, every individual has a different viewpoint for its implementation. There are clothes that could be fashionable to one person but seen as offensive to another. A dress code can be justifiable when put into a situation that really does require certain attire to be worn. It gives a sense of formality and distinguishes an individual apart from a group. We should have dress codes because some people feel insecure about their appearances. If we start wearing inappropriate school clothes, such as shorts and tank tops then some people may feel insecure. They may not feel good about how they look and this could cause serious behavior problems and interfere with school work and socializing.

Today, most states have laws that allow school boards to make dress code rules for students within their district to promote a safe, disciplined school environment, prevent interference with schoolwork and discipline, and to encourage uniformity of student dress(“School Dress Codes.”) . Dress codes are needed and is a good idea for students to follow that gives them structure and realistic views on how they should portray themselves in the world. By following dress codes, it terminates the salacious feelings that may arise due to revealing clothes worn by students, it promotes a safe environment, and prevents interference with students learning. Employees wearing what they want will create a relaxed work environment and they won’t feel as stressed. They will feel like they have more freedom and will like coming to work. Imagine you’re in a store and you’re in need of assistance but everyone is dressed casual. How would you know the difference from a person who works there, and a random shopper? Also, what would you think of a business if all their workers were dressed in jeans, sneaker, and random clothes they pulled out their closet. Although some people think otherwise and feel like a uniform won't let them express themselves. I believe a dress code is needed because it identifies the workers and gives the company a better look.

Everyone is different and getting them to conform to equality is very difficult. Though dress code prevents problems, it can also create some. It reduces violence and decreases bullying. Dress code can make a school safer for your child and a little less stressful.

Dress code is one of the most enforced policy in schools. Not everyone thinks the same about what is too long or short. So because not everyone agrees there are specific rules. When you put your arms straight down next to your body, shorts, skirts, and dresses cannot be shorter than where the end of your finger tips reach. Girls aren't supposed to wear shorts that are shorter than that, instead we're expected to wear long short. Wouldn't long shorts be considered pants?
