Pledger 1 Mason Pledger Mrs. Daugherty English 9 Honors 20 March 2017 Performance Enhancers and Athletes Why would athletes even need to use performance enhancers? Some athletes use steroids to boost their strength. There are many health risks that steroids can cause. Things like irregular heartbeat and heart failure can occur. I think that athletes who steroids or other drugs to enhance their strength should have a harsher punishment. Athletes need to know not to use steroids because they can get serious health problems. “For athletes that do decide to take steroids on a regular basis, 80% of them show some form of biochemical abnormalities of the liver during medical testing” (“20 Incredible Statistics of Steroid Use in Professional Sports”). …show more content…
There needs to be good examples set for teens so they don’t use steroids at a young age and end up with problems in the future. There should be stricter punishment for steroid use so young people don’t end up using them. Some people say athletes shouldn’t be punished for using steroids because they are just trying to get stronger. “60% of people who use steroids believe that taking steroids is a right of the modern professional athlete” (“20 Incredible Statistics of Steroid Use in Professional Sports”). People don’t think about the fact that steroids actually can harm their …show more content…
Part of the issue may be the fact that visual exposure to heavily muscled men and women in media today has a similar effect that is seen with models and young girls. People judge themselves against the mega bodybuilders and athletes, find themselves lacking, and decide to take steroids so that they can have their “best body” (“20 Incredible Statistics of Steroid Use in Professional Sports”). Athletes using steroids can develop all kinds of health problems and influence other people to start using them, too. Punishment for using performance enhancers should be stricter punishment for using steroids to try to prevent people from using them and endangering their health. Pledger 3 Overall, there should be stricter punishments for athletes using performance enhancers. Steroids are detrimental to a person’s health. Young people are being influenced to use performance enhancers because of athletes who use them. Stricter punishment can prevent athletes from using steroids because they wouldn’t want to be caught and actually go through the
Athletes who are naturally athletic and have put their entire life into training are being beat out by people that are athletic but did not want to work really hard so they took performance enhancers. This issue involves the public because students are using performance enhancer. If someone you know is using performance enhancers you need to persuade them to stop and tell them that yes it will make you stronger but it is really bad for them. There are many side effects that could come with steroid use like, acne, breast development in men, heart attacks, and liver cancer. Some effects can be reversible, while something like voice deepening in females is permanent.
After doing research on the use of steroids and their effects I have came to the conclusion that steroids is only bad thing if it is abused. Just like any other drug. A lot of people don't know what to do with the good things in life. While all the negative effects of steroids are told to us we are ignoring how steroids can actually help us. Especially in Athletes. Many people believe that athletes that “juice” are cheating. In reality they are not cheating because they are doing just what they think will help them improve and make them the best at what they love to do. There is always room for im-provement and creating all those negative side effects such as irritable and dangerous behavior is right and okay for athletes to
Ben Johnson was one of the first superstar athletes to be caught using steroids and was stripped of his 100m gold medal at the 1988 Olympics. He was eventually banned for life in 1993 for testing positive again (Richardson 2010). Performance enhancing drugs have become widely used since the 1970’s and have only increased in the numbers of athletes using the drugs to up their endurance and perform to their greatest potential. Professionals such as Barry Bonds, Jose Canseco, and Hulk Hogan have all been humiliated and are now seen as cheaters after being caught using steroids. It is too late to stop these sports fuelled on drugs because of the large number of athletes using, so why not consider drug use as a
Steroids are the single most abused performance-enhancing substance in the history of sports. As popular as the drug may be, the DEA listed anabolic steroids as a controlled substance under the Controlled Substance Act in 1990: meaning steroids can only be prescribed by a medical professional (Parks 12). Steroids are not only creating a poor image of professional sports, they also set a terrible example for the athletic, competitive youth of this generation. Children venerate their role models - like Mark McGwire and Barry Bonds - and think the only way to be as successful as they are is to do as they do: use steroids. What the youth are too naïve to consider is that steroids do not improve agility, skill or cardiovascular capacity, and can prematurely stunt growth and destroy the liver of adolescents (ESPN). While the effects on the youth cannot be ignored, the everlasting effects on sports themselves leave a tarnished sense of distrust. Dr. Paul Finkelman stated, “Steroids undermine the integrity [of the game] by placing in doubt the skill of players, as fans assume that homers are hit because of steroids, not skill” (ProCon). The problem with making a stricter Performance Enhancing Drug (PED) testing policy is that if one substance becomes too recognizable, there will always be new, untested drugs which can cause more harm to one’s body than steroids ever would (Ropp). Random drug testing has proven successful in the past, but tests are very expensive and can sometimes be
Since mankind fist started competing in organized sports there has been a race to discover new and better ways to improve an athlete’s capability. These elite athletes are constantly looking for anything under their power that they can do to surpass their competition. However, many times they result in choosing steroids as their mean to improve themselves; a very delicate topic in our society. Us, the spectators, love seeing records being broken and home runs being hit, but when those athletes are caught using PESs (performance-enhancing substances), we do not think twice before accusing him or her of cheating. The general public has no
The use of steroids among professional athletes sure are a problem, but we have to remember that they have doctors around them all the time that monitors their bodies to keep the side effects as low as possible. What is a bigger problem is all the people who use steroids as a lazy way to better physique.
“…medical researchers believe that between 1 and 3 million youths and adults have taken anabolic steroids in one form or another specifically to enhance their looks or athletic performances,” stated Nuwer (Nuwer, 61). As astounding as these figures are, the number of performance drug users is steadily increasing. With this progressively increasing numbers, it is projected that millions more will use steroids in the immediate future (Newer, 61). Athletes have always sought an advantage in competition even if ignoring the law and their health if necessary. Using drugs of any sort to facilitate an athlete’s athletic ability should be illegal. The use of performance enhancing drugs is not only detrimental to the user but it also creates an
Do we really want student-athletes replacing hard work with steroids? That’s like cheating on a test. For instance, many have been abusing drugs in a way to make their performance on the court or field better. This is a practice athletes have been in for years to make them a better player or asset to the team. All who are participating in athletics should be guaranteed a safe and fair game instead of worrying about those taking a daily dose of drugs for their own pleasure. These actions they are taking are not only dangerous and unfair, but illegal. For those who do participate in the consumption of drugs, their should be a formidable punishment. Although some uninformed people might say drug testing is an unnecessary waste of time and money,
One major argument for steroid and PED bans is the understanding that steroid approval sets an unhealthy example and standard for future athletes. Steroids have already crossed over from professional sports to collegiate athletics and even younger than that. 2009, a study conducted by Monitoring the Future concluded that 1.3% of 8th graders, 1.3% of 10th graders, and 2.2% of 12th graders reported using anabolic steroids at least once (How Dangerous are Performance Enhancing Drugs?). This excludes the unreported cases, but even without this standing, even a measly 1.3% is too high. Between 20% and 27% of high schools have some type of drug testing, and an escalating amount of high schools are creating entire programs (Is Athlete Drug Testing
The problem with today’s society is that steroids are everywhere and companies are finding ways around the steroid label by producing drugs that contain the same ingredients but are labeled differently. Professional athletes are also becoming big icons for people and many athletes are using steroids to enhance their performance. Athletes are supposed to be role models and by getting involved in these kinds of things people see it as an ok thing to do. Steroids are common everywhere, baseball and football players are constantly finding ways to take these drugs. Pro wrestling
Steroid use in today’s youth is also becoming a large problem. With an ever- increasing pressure to “make it big” high school athletes are succumbing to the temptation of steroids and by taking that path, they risk injury. High school athletes are not physically mature enough to handle the impressive transformations that steroids could bring. Bones can only hold so much lean muscle mass and once that point is reached the muscle can only tear. This is one of the large negatives involved with steroids and is an increasing problem in today’s
In the past three decades, steroids has been becoming a serious problem more than ever in the athletic field. Steroids are anabolic drug "to build" growth hormones that include the androgens (male sex hormones) principally testosterone and estrogen and progestogens (female sex hormones). Steroids were first developed for medical purposes. They're used in controlling inflammation, strengthening weakened hearts, preventing conception, and alleviating symptoms of arthritis and asthma. Unfortunately research has shown that steroids have been abused in almost every kind of sport. Although steroids contribute to a muscular body, usage should remain illegal because they physically deteriorate and mentally destroy the body.
Steroids is a type of drug that helps you work out. They have different type of ways to take steroids. People use steroids by injecting themselves or by drinking pills. I read that steroids do not trigger the brain rapid. But the reason that people use steroids is so that they can get big and buff. There is different type of ways to inject your selves or where to inject your selves. They personally say that it is better to inject the steroids in the muscle. Obviously in the muscle that you are going to be working out throughout that time.
I do think that legal steroid use with influence the teenage viewers of professional sports for the better and for the worse. For the better because the port game would most likely be more interesting because of everything that would be going on. For worse because teenagers that do not believe in steroids with just stop watching the sports that use them. I believe that this is unethical because it is not morally correct.
Abstract: With the increase of competition has also come the need to become bigger and stronger than the opponent. The use of steroids among athletes has caused the focus of the game to change. No longer does an athlete want to win by doing their best, but they want to become bigger and have an advantage over the opponent. Ultimately, all athletes feel that they need to use performance-enhancing drugs to compete at the same level. Despite all of the warnings and information on performance-enhancing drugs, athletes continue to use them and overlook the potential health risks associated with steroids.
