Black Lives Matter. When you hear this phrase it will often be followed by All Lives Matter. What do these mean? You probably don’t understand yet. Both of these movements pose great questions about the current social challenges within our society. However, the true question to ask is are either of these movements correct and relevant? The concept behind Black Lives Matter is nothing new. This can be seen in a book I recently read called Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates. In fact, Coates early views on the racial divide mirror the ideas behind the movement. Coates often spoke of “The Dream” of Americans. This Dream communicates that America is a perfect little nation that is expunged of guilt and responsibility of all the horrible things that have occurred in the past, such as racism and slavery. The Dream is primarily a white ideal. …show more content…
Potentially, the All Lives Matter movement is a good idea as it reinforces that we should not be categorizing ourselves by race if we want to eliminate the color line. Generally it expresses a more mature outlook on the situation. Yet, it also is condescending. It is demeaning to the importance of the idea behind Black Lives Matter. The beliefs behind Black Lives Matter are justified. Black Lives Matter has gone by different names in the past but has been present since the founding of this country. At this point you must realize that this is not suddenly going to disappear. In fact there might always be a divide. I encourage you to try to bridge the divide in your life. I encourage you to understand the struggle of others, and don’t discourage the fight and struggles of others. I encourage you not to be a Dreamer. Like Coates, I want you to “hope for them” (151). I encourage you to believe that All Lives Matter while also uplifting that Black Lives Matter. Lastly, I encourage you the cross the line. Don’t try to erase it, but don’t stand on one side or the
Black Lives Matter is an international activist movement that started within the African-American communities. This movement is organized by Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi. Ever since the black people have stepped on American soil, they have continued to be victims of racism and violence. From slavery to lynching to segregation, the black people have suffered alot in this country. In the past few years, there are so many of them that have been targeted by the law enforcement authorities across the country. This movement’s goal is to raise awareness of racism and violence against African-Americans. They wants African-American to live with dignity and respect like other Americans do.
For decades black Americans have been treated as animals, looked at as if they are monsters, and killed like bugs. Actions like Police brutality and racism is what caused Black Lives Matter. The creation of the Black Lives Matter was a response by the black community to give a voice to black Americans affected by the increase of wrongful deaths due to the law enforcements and vigilantes across the country. This has been going on for so long that it seems like we are stuck in the past. For years, even decades black Americans have had to live the struggle of being equal. Even when things are going good and we think we finally have the same rights, something happened to change that. It is time to shed a light on the real purpose of Black Lives Matter and why they are important to today's society.
According to Central Florida Future “ Black Lives Matter is simply us saying,”Our lives are valid”.It is not the same as “Our lives are more important than yours”(Debouse and Ellison). When this movement was created it's not a movement for Black lives only matter, this movement is bringing attention to African-American lives do matter as well as everybody else's lives. The Christian Science Monitor states “Other supporters point out that responding to “Black Lives Matter” by saying “all lives matter” minimizes the problems faced by black Americans, and undercuts their message”(Fredrikson). Just by saying all lives matter, which they do, but the African-American folks feel they are excluded from all lives matter because if everybody's life did matter police and other people would not be victimizing the blacks as the bad guys. The attention people have brought to this movement is amazing because now more and more people are understanding and learning as to why is movement started and what is the reason they are doing it for. Celebrities such as Beyonce, Snoop Dogg and Stevie Wonder have brought attention to this movement by sharing their opinion on social media, interviews etc. In conclusion, Black Lives Matter has a valid reasoning to be a positive
When you hear “Black Lives Matter” someone else will try to refute your argument with “All Lives Matter.” The context of “Black Lives Matter” is not that other lives don’t have worth. The context of “Black Lives Matter” is that the value of black lives remains under assault in the United States. When people say, “Black Lives Matter,” they are acknowledging an important context that involves several centuries of slavery, civil rights, mass incarceration and brutality. It highlights the value of black lives because historically, this country often ignored that value. The problem with saying “All Lives Matter,” it that it ignores the context. There is a difference between saying something is true and something is relevant. For example, it’s like going to a Cancer fundraiser and screaming ‘There are other diseases too!’ Or when a parent says,” I love my son,” you don’t say “What about your daughter? Don’t you love all your children?” When a person says, “Black Lives Matter” we should not say “All Lives Matter.” It is an attempt to diminish the ongoing reality of white supremacy in America. It’s a demeaning way of other people’s stories. And yes, some people associate themselves with #blacklivesmatter have called for police deaths. But the cries of few groups do not invalidate an entire
Per Sarah Jaffe, an author from occupywallstreet.net (2016), when people say Black Lives Matter, they are talking about the ways in which Black people are deprived of their basic human rights and dignity. “It is an acknowledgement that black poverty and genocide is state violence. It is an acknowledgment that 1 million Black people are locked in cages in this country–one half of all people in prisons or jails–is an act of state violence,” states Alicia Garza. The founder of Black Lives Matter goes on and states that, “Black Lives Matter doesn’t mean your life isn’t important–it means that Black lives, which are without value within White supremacy, are important to your liberation.”
If there is one thing that I have learned the most throughout this semester, it is to ask why. Not to sit and accept what I am told but to ask “So what?” and this is what brought me to this question. Why do black lives matter? Of course, the question could be answered by just saying that all lives matter but if that was the correct answer, then there would not be a problem. There are many ways to look at this question and many sociological concepts to apply to it and that’s what makes this particular question very intriguing. The “Black Lives Matter” movement started with numerous deaths of black individuals by the hands of the police force. Some of the shootings were said to have happened for valid reasons but that is a never ending controversy. Granted, these things have been happening for years and it is more or less just a momentary subject prompted by heavy media coverage, but why did the shootings even happen to begin with. It would be foolish to just sit and shout “It is become of racism!” because there is a better explanation other than that. There is a problem that has to be explained in some way. The problem is that African Americans have been killed by the hands of mostly white policemen and nobody seems to know how to give a rational reason. The three ways I am going to take explain this is through the eyes a functionalist, a conflict theorist, and symbolic interactionist along with a few other sociological explanations.
The statement “black lives matter” fueled the start of a movement. When this movement began people were in need of healing when everyone’s morale was low and gave black people in America hope that their lives did matter. Everyone
The Black Lives Movement was a creation that happened in 2012 after the prompted death of Trayvon Martin, a young black man, that was racially profiled and stereotyped by an older man named George Zimmerman was shot and killed because he was seen as a threat. The movement was smaller in 2012; however, the emergent of more African Americans being killed over senseless crimes have cause more people to join the organization and promote change and try to rebuild the black community by unitifying black liberation. It’s more than the brutality of Africans Americans it’s about the future as a race in relate to education, the prison system, wage gap,
First and foremost this post is NOT up for a debate I am expressing how I feel and any ignorance will be deleted and blocked.... Black lives matter was started for an awareness, just as any cancer awareness but you don't see anyone getting upset about them. How would you like for someone to try and stop the breast cancer walk and say "well all cancer matters"? That is a known fact but this is the one we are focused on right at that given minute. We as people are blinded by certain situations that go on that we don't typically see. How would you feel if you were in their shoes? How long did it take for a colored person to even have the opportunity to become president (and the list goes on)?? If it was the other way around, I would feel as if the world viewed me as not being good enough.
Black Lives Matter movement recognizes the crime problem and want show us that Black people are not characteristically (like we are “born” with it) more violent or disposed to crime than other races but black people are poor, which more likely to be targeted by police and get arrested, and more likely to attend poor or failing schools. That is the system of white supremacy to take control of other races. Therefore, the goal of Black Lives Matter is to reduce violent crime because we, who want to end the war, must fight to change systems instead of demonizing people. From my GSR 300 class, we, classmates, come up our event to educate other including ourselves about Black Lives Matter because of the racism in school today is not born out of intense
Should one even have to have the Black lives matter movement? It’s ridiculous that the human race has separated their kind into smaller groups and making them less than others. One could argue that all lives matter. As long as they are human lives of course. The human race in itself is so so selfish that they exclude other animals. However as one can see in Brent Staples’s essay and Clint Smith’s Ted Talk, black lives have been thought of as dangerous and bad.. Kids are being told to act like adults when they’re not. It’s difficult to not see a child be just that, a child. It’s sad that humans stereotype each other based on simple rumos or just one incident. The sad part is that the young
All Lives Matter. What’s the difference? How is one greater than the other? Black Lives Matter is an organization that was made to spotlight the struggles of the most oppressed race of people in the entirety of existence, and battle dehumanizing struggles that Black people globally have to face. Anti-Blackness is a very real and prevalent ideology in all global cultures. Not all races are oppressed. Not all peoples are being targeted because of their race. Not all peoples have struggled, let alone face the same struggle Black people have for all of existence. All Lives Matter takes away from this spotlight highlighting the major struggles of oppressed people, to feed into white tears. All Lives Matter was created by privileged people. When all you know is privilege, equality feels like oppression. Black Lives Matter is not anti-white, it’s not an exclusive community created to strive for Black privilege, but Black justness and equality. Validating that Black lives do in fact matter, does not invalidate that other lives. Valuing the lives of Black people, does not devalue the lives of other peoples. Obviously, all lives matter, however, not all lives face oppression because of their race; not all lives struggle through nearly the equivalence of the struggles of Black people. Black Lives Matter is projected through organized protests, marches, riots, etc. After the murders of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, Black Lives Matter protests began sparking
The Black Lives Matter movement has swept across America. It 's branched out with chapters in over 31 cities and held rallies and boycotts across the United States(Sidner). The Black Lives Matter movement started with the outrage of the death of a young man. It continues to take over headlines and raise awareness on police brutality and inequality. However, the movement has met resistance from the All Lives Matter group. This group thinks that Black Lives Matter is a movement to express hatred towards other races. However, statistics, the views of fellow citizens, and the overall purpose of the Black Lives Matter movement, can prove that the movement wasn 't meant to express hate on other races and that we need to support the movement instead of going against it.
Some folks say and support “Black Lives” and others, “All Lives”. As time go on, things take a turn ‘for the worse’. The ‘turn for the worse’ is due to the mindset of many people and the mass media. With time should come justice, peace and common ground on what is happening, but what if no one is supportive or have no knowledge of what is to come? The saying of “All Lives Matter” is deleterious and ruinous to the “Black Lives Matter” movement and support and to the black community by deteriorating their beliefs, livelihood, and mentality.
In 2013, a movement called Black Lives Matters was started after George Zimerman was found not guilty of the murder of Trayvon Martin. Many Americans complain again the injustice and rallied together to form the Black lives matter movement. The Black lives matter movement though has many issues within their movement, but the main issue is that the people of the movement are segregating themselves from other races whenever they say the words “black lives matter”. That’s why the phrase “All lives matter” has come about. The term “All Lives matter” is stating that people of this movement care about all people instead of just one color, that the movement does not support the supremacy of a race & Radical Organization, and show that the police force is not discriminative towards any one race.
