It is no hidden secret that many Chinese parents reap the bragging rights of well-educated, career driven and disciplined descendants, which is an important factor in today's society; however, such parenting can lead teens to experience psychological effects such as depression and ultimately suicide. Regardless of concerned critics, Amy Chua remains positive on the result of tiger parenting. She believes that this parenting enables her children to be successful and she expects nothing but "the best". On the contrary, the recipient of such harsh treatment in the poem "Suicide Note", often feels an emotional burden, belittled, and inadequate when failure to meet Asian parents' demanding standards. Lastly, she points that Chinese parents believe to know what's best for their children. She goes on to give an example of this by saying "That's why Chinese daughters can't have boyfriends in high school and why Chinese kids can't go to sleepaway camp." Her belief in sorting out the child's priorities over their wants is an indicator that she focuses only on the things that can bring forth success opposed to Westerners who would permit their children to do these things along with others. Despite the opinions of others, she still has a positive outlook on the cultural Chinese parenting style.
In her poem "Suicide Note", Janice Mirikanti expresses that the amount of stress she's experiencing is a result of the continuous pressure from her parents and culture. In her poem she apologizes to her parents. She even goes on to say that if she were a boy that things could possibly be easier for her. She expresses that she gives each task her all, no matter the difficulty and somehow still fails to receive validation. In the poem she uses key words or phrases to trigger specific emotions within the reader such as "not good enough, not pretty enough, not smart enough."
The speaker of" Suicide Note" and Amy Chua's views are similar regarding knowing to meet the requirements of Asian parenting. On the other hand, the speaker of the poem distinguishes a difference, which shows in her decision to commit suicide. She feels that
