Commonly, people belive courage is rushing into a burning building or fighting on the frontlines of war, but courage can be more personal, such as a death in the family or standing up for whats right, even if it isn’t popular. Great examples of courage appear throughout literature, such as in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird. In it, the characters Jem and Mrs. Dubose show courage by doing what is right even if they know they have lost. Based on that, I belive these characters show immence courage, but Jem shows more by standing up for what he belives is right, risking his life in order to not dissapoint his father, and doing what is right even if he dispises it. All of these things show Jem’s courage throughout the novel One of the larger
Courage is shown by different characters in varying ways throughout the novel. These characters are Jem, Boo Radley, Mrs. Dubose and Atticus. Jem shows a small amount of courage when Atticus decides to face a lynch mob. Jem understands who they are and what they want to do, but he still refuses to go home and remains to defend his father. Boo Radley also shows courage by putting all his fears of the outside world behind him to save Jem and Scout's lives.
In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, courage is shown greatly several times. One being when Scout sees Atticus shoot the mad dog even though Atticus does not think that the act that he had performed was very courageous Scout and Jem are very proud of their father for what he has done in the situation. Two more examples of courage in the novel are Tom Robinson standing up for himself in his trial and Mrs. Dubose overcoming her morphine addiction. Courage shows uncertain ramifications about society in Maycomb through Mrs. Dubose, Atticus's and Tom Robinson’s actions.
What is courage? Is it when you join the army to fight for your country? Or is it asking that pretty girl out on a date? Yes and yes, these are both acts of courage. Bravery is shown throughout the novel within three characters. Atticus Finch, Boo Radley and Scout Finch show great acts of courage in the novel To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee.
An example where courage is shown is when Atticus explains to Jem and Scout that the dying Mrs. Dubose displayed “real courage” and his children are puzzled because Mrs. Dubose said awful statements about Atticus. On page 116, Atticus says, “‘I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand.” This is an example of courage because Atticus is explaining to his children that courage isn’t always physically shown and can be shown in other ways than this. He is saying that Mrs. Dubose displayed courage just by not wanting to die a morphine addict and accomplishing this. This act shows “real courage” because Mrs. Dubose depended on the morphine for so long and died the way she wanted to die. Even though Mrs. Dubose showed a different type of courage then a man with a gun in his hand, she still displayed immense courage and strength before she died, according to

To kill a mockingbird, perfectly and repetitively represents the theme of courage, doing so through the characters' actions but also their development throughout the book. Courage’s Distinct Traits as Presented in To Kill a Mockingbird Courage is a common theme expressed throughout countless novels spanning years, but in To Kill a Mockingbird, courage drives the plot of the novel and helps the main characters gain a better grasp of the world around them. Throughout the span of the novel, each of the characters are forced to take new perspectives on the events unfolding in front of them to overcome the deeply rooted prejudice of an old Southern town. Scout, Jem, Atticus, and other characters central to the plot of the novel discover that it takes different forms of bravery to overcome obstacles, and that each form is strong in their own right. Courage, as elucidated by Harper Lee in To Kill A Mockingbird, is
Courage, according to the dictionary is, “the ability to do something that frightens one.” On the other hand, courage defined in the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, is, “ it’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyways and you see through it no matter what.” (Lee, 112) Through this quote, Atticus defines the fact that one must fight with all their might for something that is right despite if they win or lose. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, many of the book’s characters show courage. Courage is shown when a character stands up for their beliefs, even when they face heavy opposition. They decide to fight even when they know they will most likely lose, or even if they are the only one fighting. The first character in the book that shows courage is none other than mean, old Mrs. Dubose, who was a morphine addict. According to the text, Jem read to Mrs. Dubose daily in order to take her mind off of her addiction. Jem refuses to comply, because Mrs. Dubose acts rude towards him and his father, Atticus. However, Atticus forces Jem to do so to show him what real courage is. Atticus states, “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand.” (Lee, 149) This statement shows that even though Mrs. Dubose wasn’t a nice lady on the outside, she kept her courage bottled up on the
Webster's dictionary defines courage as "mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty." According to Atticus Finch, one of the main characters in To Kill A Mockingbird, "Courage is when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what." (Chapter 11, Page 124) No matter how you define it, Harper Lee definitely portrays the theme of mental courage in this book. The book demonstrates that mental courage is fighting what you believe in no matter the consequence. It is one of the most predominant themes and is shown in many of the characters, including Atticus, Jem and Scout, who all show mental
The play of Macbeth is all about power and greed. It is about ambition overriding inhibitions and the conscience of a good man. We know that most people consider Macbeth to be a good and a brave man at the start of the book, for example King Duncan himself refers to him as “O valiant cousin, worthy gentleman!” He is admired for his skills in battle by everyone. It is hard to say what driving force underlies the events of the story, and it is equally hard to know what emotions or convictions drove the characters to do what they did. Parts of the text give us detail and insight as to the relation and power balance in the marriage of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, this can be interpreted and used to try to
In history whenever there is an event that can benefit or change the course of someone's life for the better, people try to come and join the cause. This is what happened in the California and Colorado Gold Rush. The Colorado and California Gold Rush during the 1800s brought thousands of people to the west in search of gold. Although many people tried to strike it rich, the Native Americans suffered disruption to their lands. The gold rush helped keep the fire sparked between the Native Americans and the colonizers. Augustine of Hippo focuses on the idea of God being hidden within us and intertwines the ideas of Trinitarian and image mysticism. In his section, On the Trinity, Augustine shifts to the focus on the mind as the highest form of human intelligence. In this section, Dupré and Wiseman note,” although the human human mind is not of Gods’ own nature, yet the image of that nature…is to be sought and discovered in the most excellent part of our nature (Dupré and Weisman, 64).” Here we think about the idea of the mind remembering, understanding, and loving itself. Perceiving the balance of all three of these things will perceive a trinity. The trinity will not be God, but a far less image but at least it is a image of the Lord. According to Dupré and Weisman, “ The mind cant come from outside to itself. There should be born
