It is safe to say that most of the stories that we read in novels and see in films are depictions of what we see and experience in real life. As per Kaindl: “literature and film are never detached from society, but rather react to its developments, changes, and upheavals with their own methods and devices” (2014, 4). Of course, this is only true if we exclude genres that use elements belonging to mythology and fantasy. In novels and movies, it is very common to read or see stories of doctors, lawyers, academics, scientific researchers, journalists, policemen, and the list goes on; these occupations have dominated the storylines. But, there are two professions that are increasingly being featured in literature and film in the recent times; these
In Power of Myth, Joseph Campbell calls the movie theater “a special temple where the hero has moved into the sphere of being mythologized” (Campbell). Watching the movie Baraka, the audience can connect to Campbell’s description of the didactic nature of movies. According to its co-director Fricke, Baraka was intended to be "a journey of rediscovery that plunges into nature, into history, into the human spirit and finally into the realm of the infinite" (Fricke). It is a visualization of the interconnectedness humans share with the earth. Furthermore, Baraka dives into the didactic elements of archetypes and images that instruct the soul. Although Baraka does not use words, there is a clear message of humans and their world that
[edit] Uses of sociological imagination in filmsThe advantages of using popular films to enhance students' comprehension of sociological topics is widely recognized. Those who teach courses in social problems report using films to teach about war, to aid students in adopting a global perspective and to confront issues of race relations. There are benefits of using film as part of a multimedia approach to teaching courses in popular culture. It also provides students of medical sociology with case studies for hands-on observational experiences. It acknowledges the value of films as historical documentation of changes in cultural ideas, materials, and institutions.

In old times, humankind has looked to utilize stories to clarify the world in which it lives. Similarly, as old man utilized stories of divine beings and creatures to clarify the world; superior person utilizes stories of exceptional legends and colossal scoundrels to do likewise (Stuller). Comic books are modern mythology, in that they are superior man 's strategy for clarifying their general surroundings through the fantastical. The characters frequently handle such major, philosophical, (Ahrens, Jörn, and Meeting) social and story ideas as the nature of sound and malevolence, man 's inward battle, the wannabe, the women 's activist, and the rescuer.

1. How is the word myth used popularly? For example, what does the statement, “It’s a myth” mean? In contrast, how is the word myth used in the academic context? After considering the definition in your textbooks and course materials, write a definition in your own words.
For example, police and solider wear point of view cameras to show what is occurring in the world. In that case, cameras are not fantasies, they are realities. Since cameras may be used for security, it allows people to be vigilant and aware of their surroundings. “After the Michael Brown shooting, in Ferguson, many commentators, accustomed already to the ubiquity of cameras, were dismayed that there was no footage of the incident” (Paumgarten 339). Paumgarten continues stating, “In this instance, we may wish we had some, but a world in which police film every interaction with the public is not all sweetness and light” (Paumgarten 339-340). Even though, this unfortunate event happened, people need the see the harsh reality of the world. There was no footage of the shooting, but many people today are filming malicious and heinous events to show that the world is not a fantasy; they are filming awareness and the harsh reality of life. It is troublesome that Michael Brown lost his life and how other witnesses film shooting of people such as Alton Sterling or Philando Castile, but photos and videos need to be shown because the public is not “sweetness and light” like Paumgarten mentions (Paumgarten
Does medieval romantic literature influence how modern films are made? Romantic literature started during the mid-12th Century (“Romance,” par.1). Medieval romances are stories and plays in which kings, knights, and damsels in distress go on some sort of adventure (from Sir Gawain and the Green Knight from Morte d’ Arthur). In addition, medieval romances consist of heroic figures showing acts of chivalry. As the years have passed, medieval romance has been portrayed in numerous screenings and productions. The differences, similarities and stereotypic character traits displayed in the influence of medieval romantic literature on modern films are significant.
Crime dramas also tend to portray women as unable to have a career and simply be happy. Women are unrealistically portrayed in the workplace. There always seems to be a character that is running from a personal demon. There is Olivia Benson in Law and Order: SVU who cannot maintain a meaningful relationship with a man. She is either constantly single or sucked into a relationship that has several problems such as a boyfriend on the police force who finds himself in a bind because of his tendency to indulge in illegal activities. CSI’s Catherine Willows always struggled with motherhood and being a single mom. She has an ex-husband who, for the longest time throughout the
As a movie actor, actors can pick and choose what roles that they want to do. If done correctly the actor can have a tremendous impact on people based on the role they played. This impact is where social change can occur. The ideas in a movie are planted in the brains of the viewers. They then go out into the real world and act with these ideas
Hollywood’s Portrayal of Medieval Times Hollywood has based many modern day movies in the medieval time period because our society structure and several other aspects of our society can be traced back to the Middle Ages. Literature first started in the medieval time period by Geoffrey Chaucer, whom Hollywood made a key character in A Knight’s Tale. Society structure varied from Kings and nobles to peasants and not everyone was treated equally, similar to today’s society where our social ladder goes from the rich to the homeless. Architecture from the middle ages helped shape todays buildings that are standing all over the world and some still remain from the medieval time period. Hollywood depicts several aspects of the Middle Ages in the movie
Why is the found-footage genre still a thing? It’s almost like “fetch” at this point, filmmakers need to stop trying to make found-footage happen. It’s like Arnold Schwarzenegger’s friend on a plane, it’s dead tired. In all seriousness, I do still think there’s hope for the found-footage genre, but that kind of salvation can only come about when the people backing these films learn to remedy a few of the more problematic elements that have long plagued the genre.
1974 Words Do historical films help or hinder our understanding of the past? Discuss with reference to two of the following films. Historical films have the opportunity to enhance our knowledge of the past in ways a written source is not able to. Historical films have the chance to educate people on a topic, they are able to get people involved in a particular period or issue, give a visual depiction of the time and historical films can also be used as some kind of source material. Schindler’s List is a good example of how a historical film can help people’s understanding of the past as it was created to educate people on the Holocaust.
To portray a social situation in the best way, is it crucial to set the film in an area that may be going through the same social or political problem as it gives an accurate representation of that society. By using a natural environment that depicts the social or political problem within the society, it puts an emphasis on the situation and in turn gains an emotional response from an audience (Taylor, 2006).
American society is not accurately reflected in films. In 1878 American society was introduced to the world of film. Films were a remarkable new innovation that showed Americas advances in technology. Not only was film new and exciting but, it also changed how people experienced emotions. Films have become a huge source of entertainment today but, films do not always accurately reflect American society. Furthermore, teens are not as rebellious as portrayed in films. In addition, love is not always obtained the way films portray it to be. Moreover, crime in society is not socially acceptable and glorified as shown in films. On the other hand, some people may argue that filmmakers do not have the responsibility of creating ethical and truthful reflections of society in films. Although some people may argue that filmmakers do not need to accurately reflect American society, films have created false portrayals of teens, romance, and crime in society.
