Why do you deserve to attend LEAP? Every since I was a child my parents always spoke about college.A dream of theirs has now become a huge goal for me, to be the first in my family to attend and graduate college. In the third grade, after getting a good grade on my tests their faces would light up and would tell me how proud they were of the intelligent young lady I was becoming and how they wanted me to make something great out of myself, but most importantly impact and change something in the community. As a little third grade girl I smiled and noded without fully grasping the meaning of what they were talking about. By the age of ten I knew what they meant and that’s how I knew that pursuing law school and becoming a lawyer is what I wanted to do with my life, …show more content…
Until recently I have wrapped my head around the idea that law school is what I want to pursue after graduating high school. My heart is fully poured into a career of becoming a lawyer which is why the passion for growth and passion for justice is growing and burning better than ever. When my parents spoke about college it was always a destination but I have vague directions so far on ho w to get there. With the program LEAP, it will provide a sense of direction and a first step in my career of becoming a lawyer. Knowledge is something that should be shared with everyone which is why I want to go to law school and not just become a lawyer after that. I know I want to start a program in which educates many people about their rights especially people who have migrated to the United States and have become recent U.S citizens. LEAP is a stepping stone in order for me to reach all these goals I have planned out. To become a lawyer it isn’t about just taking the classes and going to college, it’s about developing leadership skills as well. In order to develop character, it’s something that can’t be taught in a classroom but be experienced. Experiences build character and this
When I graduated high school I had no idea what I wanted to do, all I knew is I was done with public school and could live my life as what I thought an adult was. My father and most of my family believed it was important for me to go to college, and get a kick start with my life. Though they weren’t wrong, I had no idea what I wanted to do and no discipline to do my studies to the full extent of my abilities.
With the help of the program I hope to gain professional connections with like-minded people, participate in informative workshops, and receive applications assistance, amongst other great opportunities. As a first generation student, I want to be a part of the solution and not the problem, I want to make changes instead of sitting around and waiting on the change to happen. My areas of interests include family/divorce law, international law and entertainment law. These four interests are passions of mine. As a public relations
After barely graduating in the spring of 2017 from Lopez Early College High School, I went straight to my parent’s house not knowing exactly what I was going to do with my life. I knew I had ruined my life after not paying attention to my teachers and counselors about applying to colleges. They said I was a wonderful and intelligent student with a tremendous capacity of succeeding in life. Although everybody thought that about me, I never did. I was constantly under pressure thinking that I had to work in order to support my family economically, so our house was saved. I was also worried about whether my parents were getting divorced after every insignificant argument they had. I had to be an excellent example for my two younger siblings; but even though I tried my best, I never was.
I am a first-generation college student. My parents never got passed high school. They were both faced with hardship and had no choice but to get a job to deal with the responsibilities of home. My dad left India at the age of 16 to build a better life for himself and my mom in America. In my household, education has always been a priority. Since my parents have felt firsthand how life is like without a degree, they made it their mission to ingrain in us a value for education like no other. However, there have been many situations in which I have found myself lost and looking for answers about college. Sadly, by being a first-generation student, my parents could not help me. Not only could they not help me, but being the first to attend college
Who knew that dreams would come true? When I was a child, attending college was a big fantasy of mine that later became a reality. At the age of eleven, my family and I immigrated to the United States in the search for better opportunities. I came to this country with no knowledge of the language. My educational journey was not easy because of the language barriers and my immigration status as undocumented. At the beginning when I started middle school, I felt frustrated and useless for not being able to communicate with others. I was placed in ESL classes where I was taught English and basic math and science. I wasn’t learning anything new. During seventh grade, I was accidently placed in regular English classes. They were challenging at first because I was still an English learner. However, those classes helped me improved my English, and my knowledge was expanding. Even though it was hard to understand what was being discussed in class, that did not stop me from getting good grades in those classes. I would stay after school and asked questions to my teachers and read the readings carefully while taking notes. Eventually, my counselor
When I was 5 my life changed completely. My sister and I were abandoned by our mother and father. I was then raised by my aunt and uncle along with my grandparents. I was taken in and loved as if I was their own. I want to show them and myself that no matter what happens in life that I can succeed and accomplish anything I set my mind to. Therefore, I am pursuing an Associates degree and the first generation in my family to go to college first generation in my family to go to college.
Knowing that my parents are proud of me pushes me even harder to accomplish my goals. Attending college has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. It has opened up many doors and options in my life. Although I am in my second semester, it has proved to be the experience of a lifetime. All my life, I have strived for higher education.
Life is all about choices, and the one choice I knew I wanted to make was to go to college and achieve my educational goals. Knowing that my family could not support my two older sister’s college endeavors let alone mine, I knew I had to act. Throughout my high school years, I applied myself constantly through taking challenging coursework and involving myself in clubs that I was passionate for. All of those years led me to overcome the biggest obstacle a senior student
Before the first year of college came around, I realized that I had a lot of leftover money that had to be paid after my scholarships, knowing that my parents had no money to offer I was frightened. I was shaken to the core, I realized that my dream of going to college could all be over in a matter of seconds. Soon, I stepped into the financial aid office with my parents on each side of me and hoping for the worst. I soon found out that I would be eligible to apply for loans, yet I realized that there was still money that wasn’t covered with my loans. The last option was parents loan, and I looked at my parents and without hesitation took the loan. This was my dream and my parents wanted me to strive and took on something that they didn’t have to. I know that I will have to pay them cent by cent, but I know I will be able to do it. My parents were able to help my dream become a reality. I have learned that I do not have to be scared that I need to look forward and be proud of what I have accomplished so far. As my father told me to keep my head held high because I deserve to be in school like everyone else that my money should not make me feel like I shouldn’t be here at
Hofstra’s program LEAP, in which I can earn a B.A. and a Law Degree in six years, suits me well because I am an aspiring lawyer. LEAP, along with Hofstra’s Law Program that offers over 200 upper-level courses, will help me achieve my goals. Reading the P.R.I.D.E principles, I feel the same intellectual and spiritual connection that I currently experience at my Jesuit high school. I want to go to a school that is dedicated to my education and social justice issues, which is exactly what Hofstra offers.
As a result of several motivational purposes, there are many driving factors to go to college that can and will impact one’s life. Before going to college, I waited 2 ½ years after I graduated high school to finally make my decision to go to college. The reason it took me so long is that I did not know what I wanted to do with my life. First, I wanted to be a probation officer, then I changed my mind to be an OBGYN, then finally I made the decision to become a nurse. I know I have a long road of schooling ahead of me, but that is okay. I have wonderful people in my life that encourage me to continue my studies. Going to college is important since it can open many opportunities to get into a better career field, it is a fun experience, and it can also start a tradition in my family.
Even though I gained admission to all the colleges I applied to after high school, my parents were not able to raise enough money to cover for my school expenses. I stayed home for some time trying to help my parents raise enough money for school. I’m the first generation student in my family and coming from a family living under low income and struggle to put food on the table, we knew the only way to come out of this situation is through college education and that is what I'm committed to do.
I know and appreciate my privileges to have an free education since i know that there are people who would love to be in my place i decided that i need to take advantage of what I have. With my parents who encouragements i knew i could do better, so I strived to achieve excellence. During middle school i learned about AVID and how it would help me go to college and helped me be informed in what i need in order to go into college, which led me pursue in getting into AVID. In first year in being in AVID, which was in middle school, I learned what to expect in High School and start thinking what i wanted to be in the future. Which now does not seem that far back. By the time i entered High School my freshman year was learn what college was like
Another choice that relates to this is that I remember one time I made a good choice in my life that lead me into graduating high school. I had a choice to go to adult school when I was in high school because I was missing a couple of credits and in order for me to graduate I had to go for 7 weeks everyday after school. At first I told myself that I didn’t want to go because I was going to know anybody and I didn't know what to expect their. Until one of my teachers asked me how I was doing and i told her about it and i mentioned that I didn't want to go because it was going to be a waste of time , and she told me that it was for my own good and if I really cared about graduating then I should go and she made me realize that if I didn’t I
For many, after graduating high school the next big step is college. I never asked myself why or if I even wanted to. Yet, since I was not yet ready to join the work force, and didn’t want to disappoint my parents, I simply followed the path that I was supposed to take. For a while I had no direction, but through the loss of my high school English teacher and my dream of making my family proud, I discovered that college was the place I wanted and needed to be.
