Why High School Graduates Should Be Required Before Attending College

Many schools require students to participate in community service, but I think this is a good idea. Many schools do not require students to volunteer in community service. I agree that students should have to volunteer to graduate. I think that students should be forced to volunteer for community service sometime in their high school career as it makes people work and shows them what work really is. It also gets people off there lazy tail.

It can also be helpful for students to meet community needs.As it is stated in article “What is College For?” by Joseph R. Urgo who is the President of St. Mary's College of Maryland, “College is for students to decide what and how they want to contribute to society, to the economy, to their communities and to the well-being of their families”. Saint Cloud State University provides the opportunity to volunteer through different organizations. In these organizations, volunteer students are supposed to help in arranging and organizing specific organization’s cultural nights. High school administrations care about the well being of their students. They aim to guide the students in a way that will prepare them for the future ahead of each student. Thus administrations of high school have certain requirements that students must finish before graduating. There is one requirement that is commonly debated by high school administration and students, this topic being community service. Community service should not be required in order to graduate from high school since forcing students to volunteer leads to false information on their records, forcing students to do so does not mean that they will continue doing community service after they graduate, and it does not mean the student will mature.

Achieving a high school diploma is extremely important to me. With a high school diploma I can go to college and after wards get a really good job, I can’t be as successful in life as I want to be without my diploma. I wouldn’t be able to make as much as money as I want to or travel the world without any education. I cannot be a independent woman like I always wanted to be So that’s why I have to work really hard to get my high school diploma so I can go far in life This will also set a good example for my younger brothers and sisters, I am the oldest in my family yes I won’t be the first to get my diploma my little sister actually got hers before me threw pen foster and I am following her steps cause I also want to do big things with my life.

When applying for a position at a job, managers always check to see how much experience you have in order to check if you are qualified. When filling out a college application there are always questions that ask to write down any extra curricular activities you participated in or any clubs/service work you did and for how long. It is important to be a part of the community and to be dedicated to one or two locations for a certain amount of time to show commitment and effort. A student that has been a part of an organization for about three months and has not missed will be prefered at a college than a student that goes five times a month. Community service does not only help build relationships but allows students to spend their time learning new skills and it will benefit them in the future. Community service for high school seniors should be mandatory because it will teach the students how to be responsible, allow them to explore in depth something related to their career and improve their communication skills.

A continuous debate that is currently receiving much attention is whether community service should be a mandatory graduation requirement. Preparing students to effectively function in the real world is an important aspect of our education system. Today more than ever, there is an emphasis on having experience before beginning work. Most jobs are now focused on looking past your resume to see what you have given back to the community. Nevertheless, it is important that schools focus on preparing college students for the work force by mandating that they receive all of the necessary exposure and experience. Numerous schools across the country have mandated that in order for their students to graduate, they must complete a predetermined amount of community service. In Maryland, high school students are required to complete a minimum of 75 hours of service in order to graduate. However, this decision has resulted in a lot of mixed responses. Advocates of this decision stress that mandatory community service opens doors for students, while the opponents feel that it takes away valuable time from students who need to focus on their education. I believe that gaining experience outside of school is critical for future success in life. To ensure that students are prepared to transition smoothly from school to work, they need to be involved with the community while in school in order to build the leadership skills that are necessary to succeed.

I have learned that community service would take the focus off of me and make me more aware of the world and people around me. Today it seems that everybody is so wrapped up in themselves and material items that they lose sight of the things in life that truly make you happy. Just the good feelings you get when you're able to help somebody out are more rewarding than a paycheck. I also feel it would help me develop better leadership skills by planning and organizing fundraising, food drives, etc. It's difficult for many people to work as a team and work out their ideas. It's important to know when to step up and take charge, and when it's time to sit back and listen to others ideas. I feel that the sooner you can learn to work with others, the better off you are. Last but not least, I believe that community service prior to graduation will give me a better idea of what to expect once I have graduated. A lot of people enter the workforce with no prior knowledge or experience. By having that knowledge and experience I feel that I would have an edge over other graduates from different schools. All in all I know that I can and will make a difference in people's lives everyday. I hope you consider taking on a few hours of community service. This crucial four years of Highschool is what shapes up a person. Things like friends, families, and new experiences are what teach life lessons and morality. I believe that through the service activities I have taken part of this few years, I learned new qualities about myself and new aspects in life. I have learned the role of a leader, all the charitable things service can offer, and I have built a character. What impacted me the most was the “Jessey J Mcray Elementary School” program, and the Service Day activity I did in freshman year. Volunteering is a great way to bring people together and it provides physical and mental rewards for whoever decides to do it.

Taking time to volunteer at the many nonprofit organizations, homeless shelters, advocacy centers, philanthropic fundraisers, local schools and child care facilities in the inner city is not always at the forefront of young people’s minds while navigating through their college experiences. But, with a little push from student organizations, local nonprofits and passionate individuals, volunteerism and community change can start to take a front seat and become not just an opportunity, but also a priority in the lives of young people.

There is a lot of time and dedication that goes into community service. Some students may say that it is a waste of time. Community service is very time-consuming. There are better things that can be done. Students will find other alternatives that will get them out of doing community service. The students will either join a club or play a sport. They would do anything to get them out of doing community service. Some students are not as social as others. They would rather be in their room alone than be out with others.
