Why High School Graduates Should Be Required Before Attending College

Once a student graduates from high school, entering college is a life changing experience. Performing community service projects would help a college-bound student develop the qualities that would enable them to better handle college life and beyond. High school graduates should be required to take a year off to pursue community service projects before entering college in order to increase their maturity, to enhance their social awareness, and understand global perspectives. Some who dispute this theory may argue that maturity develops during college. Performing community service would help a high school graduate to develop the levels of responsibility needed for college life and post-graduation. . Once someone graduates from college, they are focused on finding a career. Once a career is found, free time becomes an issue and the amount of time available to devote to community service projects would be little to none. Giving back to the community would help a graduate develop an overall positive feeling, as community service is not a paid job. Community service can also be a humbling experience to some. Volunteering at community shelters or soup kitchens would enable the graduate to experience people at other levels of livelihood, if they were not already exposed before. This would actually be the opposite. Today’s youths are tomorrow’s future. High school graduates performing community service for a year would help the graduates better understand how the community functions as a whole. This can be done by volunteering at the local church, animal shelter, senior home, hospital, or food bank. Graduates reading to seniors at a home, or collecting food for the local food bank, will meet new people. Being able to bond with the community, interact with other individuals, and being compassionate would help graduates heighten their social
