Why Is Barbara Fietchie A Good Role Model

The protagonist of the poem is Rosa Parks, a seamstress and an active member in the local NAACP, who refused to give up her seat for a white man. Parks was arrested, which led to a boycott against Montgomery bus system. As a result of more than one year of boycott, the segregation law was announced unconstitutional.

	Lucille Ball has made significant and positive contributions to the country with her comedy. Many consider her America's best female actress. Kathleen Brady, in fact, says, "Lucille Ball is one of the greatest performing artists America has produced" (ix). Throughout her career, Ball has not only been a comedienne, but also a superb businesswoman, an excellent role model, and has won numerous awards.

“Barbara Frietchie,” a poem, written by Greenleaf Whittier, tells a story during the Civil War. A 90 year old woman stands up for what she believes in, puts the flag up that she believes is the correct one for her, and then someone from the other side says not to shoot her. The poem tells about people who were brave, and stand for what they believe in, and they didn't care where they lived, or who they were around. Each character has different qualities, and use their qualities in different way, for the better or the worse. Whittier admires Barbar’s heroic actions, when she represented her qualities. There were many problems in society that no one knew of until Eleanor Roosevelt brought them to light. “It’s easy to stand with the crowd. It takes courage to stand alone.” Mahatma Gandhi said. Eleanor decided to do what was right and help people instead of going along with what other people thought. Her rough childhood pushed her to help people that were oppressed. Eleanor especially knew what it was like to be ignored.

Leadership. This is one on the many qualities that could be used to identify Rosa Parks. She was able to defeat seemingly impossible challenges and become a role model to others. Overcoming challenges is important because it can set an example for others.

During a time when women weren't known to have power, one woman stood out to me because she made such a huge impact on society. Dorothea Dix was an author, advocate, and reformer and she was known for her efforts to change how the mentally ill and prisoners were treated. She helped create institutions across the United States and Europe that would help change how people analyzed the mentally ill and prisoners. The reason for the creation of the institutes, was because she did research study, and found evidence that showed prisoners were neglected. That was not the only things Dorothea Dix had a desire to change. She also didn’t agree with the saying "people with mental disabilities cannot be cured or healed," but in fact her as individual proved that wrong. Growing up Dorothea had health issues that affected her working career and from her experience she formed a desire to help make a difference in others' lives. I view Dorothea Dix as a role model simply because I can relate to her when it comes to her view on the mentally ill. My brother underwent brain surgery which left him as being known as a person with mental disabilities.In today's society people are treated much different and less likely to be judged all thanks to Dorothea Dix. It amazes me how Dorothea Dix back in the 1860's still has an effect on today's society and how we view and treat the mentally ill. She not only brought awareness to the mentally ill and prisoner's but she also served in the Civil War as

Lee, Barbara was born July 19, 1946 in Texas, Lee moved to California in 1960 due to her parents being in the military. Lee attended a catholic school Sisters of Loretto taught her which was dedicated to justice and peace. In high school lee worked with NAACP to integrate her high school to have a mix of races in her cheer team. Lee attend mills college while she was a single mother and receiving public assistance. She became president of Mills College’s Black Student Union while she was president Shirley Chisholm who happened to be the first African American woman elected to Congress was picked to speak at her school. After meeting Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm Lee signed up to vote for her first time and worked on Congresswoman Chisholm’s presidential campaign.

For example, Barbara Frietchie showed bravery and loyalty in her actions during the rising action, in which Whittier conveys to the reader, “Bravest of all in Frederick town/ she took up the flag the men hauled down/ in her attic window the staff she set/ to show that one heart was loyal yet” (19-22). This shows that Frietchie showed patriotism and loyalty by displaying the Union flag as the Confederate army marched down her street. This is important because she still is loyal, and she showed the Confederates that, even though she knew there was a risk of death. Barbara Frietchie is a very important person in American history that has inspired many people showing that no matter what other people think, follow the reader’s beliefs.Barbara Frietchie showed many people that it is always right to stand up and be proud of what the reader believes in whether it's considered right or wrong to other people. Some of the examples Barbara Frietchie showed us through her great actions were bravery, loyalty, and for her patriotism.

She is very much a common sense figure. It also goes so far as to parallel the two voices for the black community at that time. One voice was proactive and wanted to march for freedom and the other wanted to kneel and pray rather than stand up for their rights.

I particularly enjoy how Roberts uses a casual tone in her writing, because, for me, reading about history is difficult. However, Roberts’ style of writing kept me hooked from the beginning; I couldn’t put the book down. Before reading this book, I did not know much about these women and the kind of impact they really had during this time. During this time, women weren’t really allowed to have voices; their husbands technically owned them once they became married. These women should be the role models to girls all over the world. Your words, like these women, could lead to life-altering events. For instance, Mercy Williams was a fantastic writer. However, women during this time did not produce public writings. Mercy believed that women were vital in the fight against Britain. In one of her poems, she wrote “For females have their influence over kings, nor wives, nor mistresses were useless things/ Nor when in weighty matters they engage, could they neglect the sexes sage advice” (Roberts). They teach people that just because society tells you that you should stay in the kitchen and not speak out, does not mean you should. Speak out and make a difference in the world.
