The controversy that surrounds the use of capital punishment argues issues that surround the death penalty, but not the death penalty itself. I believe that those who sit on death row are reserved for criminals who commit the worst acts and deserve to have their life taken. These criminals should not be given a second chance, because the life that was taken did not get a second chance. Those who are given the death penalty show the result that they are a danger to society, and they shouldn’t have the possibility of hurting any more people. One could argue that justice would be served while the criminal stays behind bars, two wrongs don’t make a right, and by committing the same offense that the criminal had done while saying it’s okay to do the same only because the state says it’s acceptable. I believe that keeping the death penalty is a morally justified action and is supported by Utilitarianism and the greatest happiness principle. The death penalty is something that should only be used for brutal and premeditated crimes, because of its effectiveness to deter crime, receive retribution, and give closure for victim’s families. …show more content…
An action is morally right if the consequences leads to happiness, and the least amount of pain, and was introduced by John Stuart Mill. Many believe that capital punishment is wrong because it is barbaric and cruel and unusual punishment, but I would argue that at what point did the offender have this thought when they executed their act. In the article “Why the Death Penalty is Still Necessary” they have revealed the details of some horrific crimes committed thus furthering the reason why it is still necessary. It’s hard to understand why it is necessary and by showing the details one can understand why. For instance, in one
Capital punishment, otherwise known as the death penalty, is a controversial subject which has been argued for decades due to the ethical decisions involved. People believe the death penalty is the right thing to do and that it is the perfect example of ‘justice’ while others believe that it is immoral and overly expensive. The death penalty is not a logical sentence for criminals, it doesn’t give them the right type of justice and it is immoral.
For centuries capital punishment has been used to “punish” criminals for a severe enough crime that they committed. It dates back to hundreds of years ago and has been enacted in many different countries, some that still have it today. Death penalty/capital punishment is the punishment of death an offender receives after having a court hearing and being convicted of a crime (ProCon.org, 2008). Once someone receives a death penalty sentence, they go on death row awaiting their execution. For a very long time, the controversy regarding whether or not the death penalty is ethical or just has been a topic of debate. I believe that the
Over the course of history, the death penalty is a very heated and debatable topic. The death penalty is often viewed as inhumane and cruel. As a country that prides itself on American values and justice, we need to call attention to the criminals sitting in our jails. This is a monumental decision that no one wants to make, but someone has to. My personal stand point of the death penalty is that the death penalty is in place to help rid our society of criminal's that are incapable of being rehabilitated and released back into society. I support the death penalty because these criminals have caused emotional upheaval and are costing our society more funds required to sit in our jails with the life sentence with no parole rather than exercising
The death penalty is something that has been debated for many years, as people wonder whether carrying out the death penalty constitutes cruel and unusual punishment. The definition of cruel and unusual punishment includes deliberately degrading punishment, such as torture or a punishment that is to sever for the crime committed. I believe the death penalty to be inhumane and unnecessary no matter the circumstances. Whether how horrible acts of the criminals are I feel the death penalty is unethical. Clearly, those in favor of the death penalty see the world through the saying “an eye for an eye” or the justification from the idea of retribution. Retribution is like justice such as people are punished because they deserved to be punished
The Death Penalty is wrong, because death is bad no matter who does it. It is bad if the Government kills someone with a lethal injection. It is about the same as someone murdering people. This Essay will talk about things that are believed and things that have been researched. These facts are irrevocable mistakes, no legalized murder, and it is a little effective that it scares criminals.
Since 1973, 153 people have been exonerated from death row. To exonerate means to take away from death row or to let the accused individual go. The death penalty should be abolished from all over the world once and for all for many reasons.
The death penalty, while simple in concept, is sadly complex in execution. There are laws on when the death penalty may be used and how the death happens. There is a supposed racial and social bias on a process that is still debated whether or not it is still constitutional. The victim’s family themselves are debate for and against it. It is those debates may take years to decide whether or not to kill the suspect.
As a person I have learned how look at both sides of an argument and the death penalty is no exception; while both sides in the argument have their marit, my personal view on the subject matter is that this penalty is wrong. There are three major reasons why. The first reason just the sheer amount of tax money it takes to put someone through the death penalty. One person takes thousands of dollars more then to keep them alive and in prison. The next reason is that people can change. In reality, many people will not, but I know for a fact some do. My aunt worked in a prison for 40 years and had become friends with some of the inmates; one of her inmate friends has been in the prison for almost as long as she has worked there due to being
Capital punishment is a complex issue with many different opinions and viewpoints. Deciding whether a person should be punished by death is not a trivial ordeal nor should it be treated as such. How do you know when a crime is punishable by death or not? “A popular bumper sticker says, ‘We kill people to show people that killing people is wrong’” (Carmical). This slogan misses the idea that the death penalty does not chastise people for killing, but for murder. Murder is the purposeful action of killing another human being for whatever reason. Killing someone in self-defense does not qualify as murder as long as there is sufficient evidence proving self-defense. There are many people that view the death penalty as cruel and morally
Murder is wrong. Ever since we were little kids we have been taught to not use violence because violence does not solve anything. Yet, it is okay and legal to murder someone for murdering another person. Today, people no longer think twice as death or violence being a horrible thing. Since it is portrayed in everyday life such as in movies or sports. The concept of human life has lost its meaning. The death penalty contributes to this problem. The death penalty has always been a controversial issue, but hopefully after my speech my points will be clear as to why the death penalty is wrong. College students should not believe it is ethical to take another persons through the death penalty, because it is inhumane, unnecessary, and selfish.
Every little thing had been managing to build up, and I began to feel as if I couldn't breath. The days just seemed to drag on for no other reason than to cause me pain, and while I would admit I did deserve punishment for the crimes I had committed, I just couldn't help but wonder if maybe I had paid enough already. I had already known nothing but pain my entire life. I had nothing and no one to call my own, and the universe just kept pushing more onto my plate.
Many people question whether the death penalty is right or wrong. Issues regarding the possibility of putting an innocent man to death based on faulty investigative work and a flawed legal system are often explored. References to the concept of lex talionis are made, wondering why rapists are not raped and sadists are not beaten in a legal system that kills killers. A killer takes another 's life, liberty, or chance at happiness? Is it wrong to take the same from them? How can taking a life for a life be considered justice? So, is the death penalty genuinely considered justice, or is it blood thirst?
The death penalty is where someone has committed a serious crime and is punished by death.
The notion of sentencing another human being to death is difficult to completely comprehend. The physical procedure involved in the act of execution are easy to grasp, but the emotions involved in carrying out a death sentence on another person, regardless of how much they deserve it, is beyond comprehension. This act has been critiqued by many people from all around the world and it is our responsibility as a society to see that capital punishment is wrong and inhumane. Some oppositions to the death penalty include racial bias in death sentencing, capital punishment is irreversible, capital punishment costs more than incarceration, and poor quality defense leaves many sentenced to death.
I believe we shouldn’t have the death penalty because if we are killing people that did something so bad that the deserve the penalty they're not suffering nor feeling what you felt. For example say i was to kill one of your close family members, in a very harmful way. I know some would say i deserve to die but that’s just killing me “what if I wanted to die that’s just a way to put me out of my misery without suicide”. I’m not feeling the pain you felt if i would have done that. Sending me to jail for life would ruin me. Not only because i would only be behind doors but i would hurt everyday… i Would be thinking of it everyday. Everything that i did to that person you love. Hurting and breaking me down just like it has done to you if i did such a thing. While the death penalty undoubtedly deters some would-be murderers, there is evidence that it encourages others— especially the unstable who are attracted to media immortality like moths to a flame. If instead of facing heady weeks before television cameras, they faced a lifetime of obscurity in prison, the path of violence might seem
