Being Isolated is like being sick no one wants to be around you which causes you to be lonely. In the story Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, is mainly about Lennie. He has a mental disability and is being taken care of by George. Most of the story takes place a few miles south of Soledad. The characters Curley’s wife, Crooks, and Lennie all exemplify loneliness and isolation. In the story, Curley’s wife is very lonely. She is the only woman on the ranch; She has no one to converse with. At one point, she is talking to Lennie. “I get lonely,” she said. “You can talk to people, but I can’t talk to nobody but Curley.” “How’d you like not to talk to anybody?” (87). She has nobody other than Curley and when he is mad , he doesn’t talk to …show more content…
Lennie being very big and having a mental disability makes him lonely because he has to depend on George that’s his only friend. His only family who was there was his aunt Clara and she died so George came into his life to help. Him having mental disability is what isolates him from everyone. So that’s why George doesn’t let him speak when they go see the boss. George says, “But you ain’t gonna say a word. You jus’ stand there and don’t say nothing” (6). He tells him that because Lennie is mentally ill so he doesn’t want him to say the wrong thing. Also Lennie is lonely because he can’t keep a pet or be too friendly with anyone because he doesn’t know his strength. When the pup Lennie had died he was freaked out and He was talking to the dead pup. “Why do you got to get killed? You ain’t so little as mice. I didn’t bounce you hard” (85). He killed the pup and he knows Lennie isn’t gonna let him tend the rabbits. “... cause he was too dumb even to know he had a joke played on him”(40). Lennie has the mental capacity of a five year old. Lennie wasn’t crazy he just wasn’t really smart and when people would look at him they wouldn’t want to be his friend. That’s what caused he to be
The perceptions we make of Curley's wife are corrupted from the views of the ranch hands. Because sexuality is her only weapon she is referred to by George as 'jailbait' and ' a tart' 'Jesus what a tramp.' George has reason to be weary of her presence especially with Lenny around and the incident in Weed. 'Listen to me you crazy bastard...Don't you even look at that bitch. He is concerned about Lennie safety because he knows he won’t be able to resist her.
Curley’s wife is the loneliest character in the book. This is shown when she is in the stable with Crooks, Lennie and Candy, she whines, 'Think I don't like to
When Crooks, Lennie, and Candy were sitting in in the bunkhouse, Curley’s wife wanders into the bunkhouse and how Steinbeck says, “Looking in was Curley’s wife.” giving her no name at all! She must not be as important as everyone else if she doesn’t have a name (77). She’s also judged on her appearance and how she puts herself out there, Steinbeck mentions to the readers and says “She dropped her fingers and put her hands on her hips.” making it seem like she’s the stuff and run everyone and everything on the ranch (77). She probably acts the way she does because she doesn’t get to talk to anyone. Everyone is scared to talk to her or just doesn’t want to get into anything with Curley. She’s very lonely and she is the only girl on the farm. As she walked into the barn she saw Lennie and started talking to him and Lennie refused to talk back and that’s when she said “Ain’t I got a right to talk to nobody?” she’s upset because she doesn’t do anything all day long and has no one to talk too and she finally lost it and said something about it (87).
Lennie’s mental disability is one of his most defining traits of how he tends to forget everything. The origin of his mental disability is unclear but his mind seems to be like a two year old and forget everything. George seems to stick around Lennie because he cares for him but most importantly for his disability. In the first chapter when Lennie and George are settling down by the
“Why can’t I talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody. I get awful lonely.” This quote is an ideal representation of how Curley’s wife feels during Of Mice and Men. Curley’s wife is alone in a world of men and she yearns for a companion whom she can talk to. Another character, however, that can deeply relate to Curley’s wife is Crooks. Crooks is a perfect example of the need to be accepted, due to the fact that he feels isolated from the white ranch hands in the small shed by the barn. The desire to feel accepted in society leaves Crooks, and Curley’s wife desperate for a connection that will no longer leave them feeling isolated and alone. John Steinbeck’s novella Of Mice and Men provides a life lesson regarding human natures desire to
“Hardly none of the guys travel together” slim (35). In the 1930’s migrant workers were very independent and guys weren’t typically seen traveling because times were tough in those days. Curley’s wife is lonely because she is married to a man she doesn’t love and is unhappy. Crooks has always been alone and outcasted for the color of his skin. Candy lost his best friend and knows he won’t be good for much longer because he’s missing a hand and as soon as he can’t work they’ll kick him out. Each character feels like they don’t have people to talk to and family isn’t around or they don’t have one they can’t talk to people because this is a work place and that’s what they have is work associates not friends so if they can't talk to people at work or have friends and family who do they have really.
Loneliness was a major aspect during the time of Of Mice and Men induring the Great Depression. The Great Depression took place around the Stock Market Crash of 1929 for 12 years until the beginning of World War II. The Great Depression greatly decreased the amount of steady jobs in America (“The Great Depression”). This created many itinerant workers. Itinerant workers were men who often traveled around looking for short-term employment like Lennie and George. With constantly skipping towns and not staying in one place for very long these men were often very lonely. Unlike the characters George and Lennie, many workers traveled alone. Isolation is presented in the novel Of Mice and Men not only through the main characters George and Lennie
I have never liked Curley’s wife much but I have barely been so mad with her. It started of just fine. She came asking for Curley like every day but she started complaining like she was very unfortunate with her life because she needed to marry Curley even though she has no reason to complain and she said she was lonely. Nobody believed her and she became mad. She started asking about an incident with Curley’s hand that happened earlier and she drove Lennie in a corner he couldn’t escape. We told the machine story that we wanted to tell her but she didn’t believe us. What happened after, I don’t remember. I got mad and started insulting her because she seems to have a nice life and we work our asses of to get a bit of money and then she says
The choice that Steinbeck made to name her Curley’s Wife was intentional to represent the discrimination between men and women on the ranch especially being that she is represented as a minority. The name Curley’s Wife contains a possessive apostrophe indicating that she is the property of Curley, furthermore the fact that she is not given a name shows how she is seen as more of an object then a real human. This tells the audience how many women were treated during the 1930’s and how in male dominated societies discrimination was normal to women. Throughout much of the novel she also expresses how she feels trapped by her marriage, “well I ain’t told this to nobody before. I don’t like Curley. He ain’t a nice fella…” this depicts how the power is predominantly in Curley’s hands being that she is obligated to Curley through the marriage. And being that this line was spoken to Lennie it shows how she can relate to him being that she is also presented as a minority on the ranch thus reinforcing her low position in the hierarchy. Overall, the way that Steinbeck presents Curley’s Wife as an object rather than a human being and how she is a minority in the male dominated ranch holding a low rank in the ranch community effectively represents the struggles of many women in both the 1930’s and in the present
One’s mental state affects emotions, such as being lonely, which can affect your actions. This is demonstrated in John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men. This novel tells of two men wanting work so they can have the American dream of owning farmland. Although the men are complete opposites, they go together like a lock and key. They look out for each other when situations get hard, such as Curley’s wife trying to flirt with everyone due to her lack of attention. These harsh conditions left every man for himself. The farm is filled with lonely people just like them. Loneliness affects Curley’s wife more than others for many reasons. She is the only woman on the ranch and her isolation proves how society can’t function properly without gender equality.
Mice and men was distributed on the year 1937, it upgraded the route in which a huge number of affluent Americans lost every one of the reserve funds and cash in just shy of 24hours. It was the longest and most serious discouragement ever experienced by the industrialized western world. The book itself mice and men was composed by and writer called Steinbeck, he truly communicated and demonstrated little parts in which a huge number of American native endured in the colossal dejection. The primary two characters in this book are two men called Lennie and George, these two men relocated in distinctive parts of America to search for work, as did numerous subjects did as of now, the book itself indicates diverse key parts of the immense melancholy for example men working in homesteads and doing lower class employment to
Curley’s Wife and Curley don’t love each other, and as a result Curley’s Wife is unloved and needs to seek attention to feel important. Curley’s Wife thinks Curley is mean and controlling. Curley only views his wife as property and more like a status than a loved one. Since Curley’s Wife is unloved by anybody she feels lonely. This are examples of how Curley’s Wife is lonely and how it she is not really loved.
Curley's wife is the loneliest because she is isolated due to her reputation. The firsts person Curley’s wife talked to was Lennie and how she approached him was nice but Lennie just kept rejecting to talk to her because George had said she was gonna cause nothing but trouble. Steinbeck illustrates how even though Lennie didn't know Curley's wife he wanted to get away from her because of what he was told. Steinbeck describes Curley's wife's isolation,”George says I ain't to have nothing to do with you-talk to you or nothing.” (86).Lennie scared in a way because George had said that she was nothing but trouble also Lennie didn't want to get in trouble for talking to her because then he wasn't going to be able to tend the rabbits. Not only
John Steinbeck, author Of Mice and Men, paints a whole world of lonesomeness that creates an inevitable obstacle at every corner of life. Steinbeck lives through the characters of his story explaining the concept he perceives of loneliness. The way the characters talk, live, and even interact with the world and each other forms a world of isolation and solitude. Steinbeck integrates his ideas together to form a main theme of loneliness, one who has no friends or company, that none of the characters can avoid.
There are many different factors that can cause loneliness and isolation in a person’s life. Many of these factors are present throughout Of Mice and Men. The environment and the people who surround that person can really impact the quality of life one lives. Although isolation occurs when a person separates themselves from others physically, a person can also be isolated inside their own minds, even with others around them. In John Steinbeck’s novel, Of Mice and Men, Symbolism, imagery, and tone are used to show how isolation and loneliness shapes the lives of several characters.
