Bradbury wrote his novel Fahrenheit 451 in 1953. From the time he was writing it, he struggled to find inspiration to figure out how to write it, it was originally called The Fireman. He wrote to show an example of the media affecting reading in the United States. Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 has made its way on the banned list, mainly because he mentioned burning the bible. It was published by Ballantine Books. Our society is free, he can create and express our ideas, unlike Fahrenheit 451 society. Bradbury expresses the value and meaning of a free society.
Montag lives in a completely oppressed society. No one is allowed to think for themselves, that is why books are banned. The media convinced the people that books, they make people question things, they make people have all these extra emotions that just cause drama in a person's life. In the story, Mildred is hanging out with some of her friends. Montag comes out and starts to recite a poem to them. Mildred’s friends experience a feeling of different emotions due to the poem. “ Mrs. Phelps was crying. (pg.100)”. No one is allowed to enjoy a good book, no one can choose for themselves.

Only some people realize how books help people be smarter and more creative, such as Clarisse. Clarisse ended up getting killed. Clarisse's death made Montag realize that his actions can get him killed. When Mildred overdosed on pills she had no emotion, she didn’t think she did anything bad. Mildred said “What? Did we have a wild party or something? Feel like a hangover. God, I’m hungry. Who was here? (pg. 19)”. Anyone who sticks out from the rest is considered dangerous. Montag’s society doesn’t find violence and suicide horrible, they are common because people are so disconnected from their real emotions.
