Why Is It Important To Vote

In America, many citizens choose not to vote every year. Although, The United States of America is a democracy, Americans should be required to vote. Whether the voting is for local places or for the government, citizens should be required to vote. This will give everyone a chance to speak their minds and learn more about politics. Compulsory voting is important because everyone should have a chance to vote for what they believe in.

Voting has been a core part of our government since the very beginning, however, many citizens chose not to take part in this essential participation. To prevent any one person from gaining too much power voting was put in place as well as checks and balances in the system by the founding fathers. While not everything is decided by voting because our government is a Constitutional Republic, voting is by far the most important way a citizen can participate in the government. Therefore, it’s baffling that people chose not to vote. As Franklin D. Roosevelt said, “Nobody will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote except the American people themselves and the only way they could do this is by not voting.” While we can all agree that voting is important there is a debate on whether it should be mandatory. Voting should be an optional but important way to participate in the government.

After seeing many problems in the U.S. democracy, the major issue would be the amount non-voters in the U.S. This is an issue that is gradually affecting the political process in the U.S. especially in the present election right now. The reason that non-voters are a concern would be because citizens are not contributing to their political engagement, which causes votes to only come from one specific area. There are various types of ways to address the amount political engagement for individuals. For example, government officials can “eliminate voting barriers, boost registration, and improve unions”(McElwee, 2014). The right to vote, especially in a democracy, is a big deal. It’s one of the biggest ways that citizens can express how they feel about their government and what people they feel should lead it. New democracies that hold elections tend to have high voter turnout and enthusiasm. In America, we have one of the oldest democracies, and yet since World War 2, we haven’t had a presidential election with 65% or more of registered voters. The lack of voters makes it difficult to determine if our government is legitimate and really what the people want. Many ideas have been presented to help with solving this issue, but the most controversial has to be required voting. Citizens would have to vote, and if they don’t, they’d have to face some sort of consequence. In my opinion, required voting goes against what we stand for as a democracy, and our right to choose. Americans shouldn’t be required to vote because we have the right not to, and because of the increase in uninformed voting, unfavorable attitudes & political dissatisfaction.

Many voters are tied up in work during the daytime and evening. Extending the polling hours would help cover the votes of more working Americans. Another thing that may increase turnout, that some states are already adopting, would be to allow voters to register on election day. Many voters fail to register on time for various reasons and therefore do not vote. Various ad campaigns targeted at simply getting people out and voting would also make people interested in taking a more active role in elections.

Presidents, Senates, Chairmen, Congress, and Mayors all have three things in common. One, they hold extreme amounts of power; independently and as a whole government. Second, they citizens must elect them. Finally, they are put in office to serve and make decisions that represent us as a whole in a positive manner. It is very important to know the candidates and what they stand for because once elected their ideologies become ours. The history behind voting is interesting and imperative knowledge for all citizens of the United States of America. From living under the reign of Kings, to becoming free and able, we have fought many battles that were well worth the fight.

If I were to ask the question, “Why is voting important in the United States of America?” Majority of people would say, “It gives us hope to a more promising and better future”. In other words, our lives and futures are in the hands of whoever is elected president. That is why it is imperative people vote, it’s the “people” that is choosing the president-someone that will be our leader and will have the ability and power to run our nation.

If I were elected to the United States Congress the factors that would influence my decision on whether to vote for or against a bill would be: re-election, political party affiliations and, interest groups. My main concern as every other congressmen would be to be re-elected. If I really want to continue to be a Congressmen then I would keep in mind when the next elections would be and see how I can find my way to keep a seat in Congress.

One reason I feel it is important to vote would be because our country is known for being a democracy. Democracy means that the people of the said country chooses or votes for who is elected for anything and who they think would best represent them when the time came. The people of the United States have the decision of who is elected and what happens in our country. The United States is not a country founded upon monarchy, that is a reason why we vote. We can make our opinions known for who or what we want to see come out of this country by voting. If we did not have the privilege to vote or the privilege to have an opinion then we would not be a free country. When people do not vote, they most times regret it because they would have liked

I think the reason why the voter turnout rate is so low is because of the lack of participation in young people thinking that there votes don’t matter and the lack of interest in politics. Other reasons are the lack of courage, positivity, motivation towards the candidates. Even with all the technology around us making it easier then ever to voter young people still lack political interest in voting big time. It could also be that those who do not vote come from families that don’t discuss politics in general. Young people don’t really see the bigger picture and just think in the now and not the later future. Voting is very important to us American citizens for many reasons. One reason why voting it significant is because it is our duty as Americans. Allowing us to vote is giving the citizens a voice for laws and bills to become illegal. Also, voting lets us be a part in making important decisions within your community and our country. With the presidential election going on today I am baffled at how many of my friends care so little about it. I was always taught in my family to vote in every election because my vote mattered. I asked my roommate if she had voted and she answered back with “well no I don’t really know who to vote for and my vote wouldn’t matter anyways, so I’m just not going to do it…” I was baffled at how little she cared and how she didn’t want to try to understand more about the people running in order for her to make an educated decision and vote. Presidential Characters start off about how a person decides to vote. He talks about how people listen to their friends, politicians, and the candidates during the debate. He also talks about how people look to see how they voted in the previous years. If they voted for democrat or republican or go with their gut and choose the one they think will lead the country in the best way. Then it goes on to talk about how people need to see the candidates in action to be able to vote. It says that we need to see them as a human being so we can correctly make the right vote we believe. We cannot just see them as a person who tries to apply to the majority of peoples senses so they can win. They need to be able to have an actual conversation with them not about politics so they can actually meet the person. It states in the paragraph that,
