Once should be read in high schools
I strongly believe the outstanding book Once, a historic fiction, by Morris Gleitzman, should be read in high schools. Why is the novel Once an important story to read for high school students? It educates students about history based on the Jewish and German people, as well as learning what Jewish families had to endure during the Holocaust.
The novel is set in Poland and Germany, during the midst of World War 2. The main characters are Felix a ten-year-old orphan Jewish boy; Zelda a young girl who has a lot of attitude; Barney a nice dentist who looks after Jewish kids who lost their parents and Chaya a girl who jumped out of the train.
Firstly, the book Once teaches students about historical events that take place during WWII. The force of the Nazis is demonstrated in the novel when they didn’t let anything interfere with their schedule and purpose. Felix, Chaya and Zelda risked their lives and jumped out of a Nazi controlled train that they had been squashed in for hours. This shows the desperate measures the living Jewish had to do to survive. Also, the children and adult starved on limited food supplies. This book gives high school students an excellent understanding of events that took place during the brutal WWII.

The major theme of the book is shown through the bonds of friendship and how in the most of unlikely circumstances friendship can survive and exist between people possessing an extensive and most restrictive division. A second theme is the evil and the intolerance which existed around these times of the Nazi regime and the Holocaust, as seen by the Germans having the Jews in the concentration camp. And the third theme is the curiosity and innocence of Bruno, Shmuel and
Once there was a boy filled with stories. Once he was captured by the Nazis and his stories were almost gone. Almost. Author Morris Gleitzman through his novel ‘Once’ explores the aspects of life in Poland during WW2. The protagonist Felix invites the reader on a journey of discovery, filled with significant ideas in life such as hope, the symbolism of stories and how unfair the treatment was towards the Jews. Through the use of characterisation, symbolism and language choices these crucial themes are explored.
The setting of the book is in World War II where many people were forced to abandoned their homes because of the holocaust. Like Max, many Jews had to hide or be forced to concentration camps and leave their families. Liesel has to grow up in period of fear, hate, and guilt. An example of this is when Hans gives bread to a dying Jewish man and is beaten and called a Jew lover. This example illustrates why Jewish people had so much to fear.
The setting was different from most books about the World Wars. I had never heard of Latvia or Stalin until I read this book. The flashbacks in the story helped give a better understanding of how Lina’s life was before and the difference now. The event of the mother and father dying showed the hardships that the young children and teenager had to go through. Although there were some sad parts that I disliked, such as when Jonas changed into a mean person and started to smoke, those were the reality of what had happened during the wars. This book is one of my favorite books I have ever read! I would recommend this book to everyone and
This novel I would recommend to any person who just doesn't really like to read a plain simple book, the book is a comic based on a true story during the holocaust and it's amazing. The comic lines are creative for some how it was made in mice instead of humans and it show a symbol of how Jew's where less than the Germans who were cats and just a whole different perspective and it's

-This novel takes place in France during World War II. It is about a blind girl and a German boy who meet and they both try to survive the war that was going on.
The central idea of this book is a little girl and her struggle in concentration camps the author shows this by “ tomorrow is deportation”( Leitner 3) . This happened on May 28, 1944 where she started her journey in the camps. She explains her feelings and fairs of them too and how she's not ready to leave this place called home because she was living in hungary and she ends up having to move away. Something else that is showing Isabella’s struggle is ”Every since childhood,I remember them with terror in my heart.” (Isabella Leitner 5). In this quote she is talking about the people that heard them like cattle and stuff. This was also the people that would kill them and make them do horrible things. These were the people that didn't make them feel like people. “75 to a car... no toilets... no doctors ... no medication”( Leitner 7) Isabella is talking about how they were moved place to place in these little cattle cars and how horrible the conditions normally where. Imagine being shoved in
To begin, in the book Night, the Jews were being judged because of the way they looked, the religion they followed, and their ethnicity. Moishe the Beadle was deported because he was a foreign Jew. Rumors were spreading about Nazis coming into towns and taking over. After some Jews were deported, life became normal again. Everyone was doing everyday activities. “The deportees were quickly forgotten. A few days after they left, it was rumored that they were in Galicia, working, and even that they were content with their fate. Days went by. Then weeks and months. Life was normal again. A calm, reassuring wind blew through our homes. The shopkeepers were doing good business, the students lived among their books, and the children played in the streets. One day, as I was about to enter the synagogue, I saw Moishe the Beadle sitting
This book could show how life was during the holocaust and that kids had to go through with the struggles as well. Misha has a lot of adventures in this book and ends up in America where he can live his life and be happy. Even though
There were many important themes that this this book focused on. Ignorance is one of the major ideas that the novel was about. The main character Bruno is ignorant to all the troubles and hardship his friend is going through in the holocaust. Also an important topic obviously was the holocaust. It shows all the hardship the Jewish people went through. This novel shows very important issues in the world that apply now and back then.
This novel has a variety of settings, because the entire story is centered on flashbacks to the areas during the holocaust, and the migration of Jews. The first setting we encounter is in Central Europe during the 1900s-1940s. Next, we encounter the Auschwitz concentration camp during1944-45, and the last setting we come across is New York and Florida during the 1970s-
It is adventurous story because the character shows shifting of place and defeating of unnatural enemy. Moreover, the story gives a greater lesson in every reader. It is the valuing of friendship.
