My claim is that the Vietnam war was the biggest event in 1960. The war was bad because thousands of good people died, houses were destroyed, and a lot of money was spent during the war in 1960. The Vietnam war was very long and very costly to America. More than 3 million people (including over 58,000 Americans) were killed in the Vietnam War, and more than half of the dead were Vietnamese civilians. States History.com. Americans weren’t happy about going to war because they didn’t want to lose their lives or children son’s father’s and teen’s.The Vietnam War was considered the most expensive war in Cold War era. Says the Vietnam war website. The Department of Defense (DOD) reports that the United States spent about $168 billion (worth around
Moving from the 1950’s to the 1960’s events changed from having problems at home to once again having problems abroad. I found the Vietnam War to be the most significant event of the 1960’s because it consumed upward to half the decade and even into the 1970’s. The Vietnam War stands as the United States longest military conflict in History. According to a website dedicated to the Vietnam War, “The hostilities in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia claimed the lives of more than 58,000 Americans. Another 304,000 were wounded.” (The Ultimate Resource for the Vietnam War. 2007). This war had a great impact on many Americans especially for the ones who fought in this war. I have an uncle that fought in the Vietnam War. He was one of the unfortunate soldiers in the jungles that got sprayed with Agent Orange. He has major disabilities and has not been able to work for many years. He still has frequent nightmares stemming from his experiences in the War and his life is still hugely affected by his service many years ago. Richard M. Nixon stated in 1985 that, “No event in
The Vietnam War is known as one of the most brutal wars that the U.S. took part in. In Vietnam, the Vietnam war is known as the “American War” or the “Second Indochina War” (Rosen, 2). The war started as a conflict between the Republic of Vietnam, South Vietnam, and the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, North Vietnam (Cosmas, 329). The war began in 1957 and ended in the spring of 1975, lasting a total of 18 years (Cosmas, 329). Although the North Vietnamese lost the most people in the Vietnam War, they still won. North Vietnam did have some advantages in weaponry, the M-30 and the RPG-7, but the real reason they won was because of their overpowering desire to win.
The documentary film, Hearts and Minds, by Peter Davis; illustrates the brutal nature and different perspectives of the people involved in the Vietnam War. The Vietnam War is considered as one of the longest and horrific wars in American history. American soldiers involved in the War have diverse reactions of their experiences and encounters during the war. The Vietnamese believed that, “Americans were evil and the Vietnamese simply were fighting merely defensively”. These factors will demonstrate how the film, Hearts and Minds, helped encourage reform during and after the War.
The Vietnam War was, and continues to be, one of America's darkest moments, one that nearly tore the nation apart. In order to stop the spread of communism in Europe and Asia, the United States aided French imperialists and their reoccupation of Vietnam. At first, the U.S took a position of neutrality to both countries, but by early 1947, they began fighting in support of France. This war, lasting over 20 years, became the longest and most unpopular war in the 20th century. Overall, the Vietnam War was detrimental to the United States because it caused a massive debt from the 1960s to the 1990s, turned the American people against their government, and many troops were neglected and despised upon their return.
I think the U.S. did what was right in matter of stoping the communist to get control of the situation of the whole country. In my opinion the U. S saw the option to intervened in the Vietnam war as the only way to help because in that moment the Republic Democratic of Vietnam had the back up plan from the Soviet Union, but somenthing I don't agreed with the war was that the country should never send the troops to Vietnam. The reason of my opinion was that the country send the troops with new technology, but did not did the required research or wait until the war in Vietnam between the two side continued for a period of enough time to collect the pros and cons of the situation.
The Vietnam war today is considered one of the most traumatic but important events in the United States history. The war was between the North and South Vietnamese however the United states got involved to help the South avoid falling into the communist ways just as the North did. There were some positive aspects in the war, however there seemed to be more negative situations and opinions that overpowered the good. Opposition grew as the result of; the Gulf of Tonkin, the John Kerry testimony and the Tet Offensive. These aspects along with many others allow many to come to the conclusion that the war was fatalistic thing.
The Vietnam War can be considered as a hot battle that was part of an even greater conflict, the Cold War. It began with little political involvement and left the country divisive by the concluding years of the war. The atrocities that American troops experienced and committed helped shape the unpopular opinion on the war. The war in Vietnam became America’s longest running conflict that coincided with chaos, controversies and ultimately distraught citizens back home.
Anais Moss The Vietnam War was a very devastating war. There were many negative aspects that came along with this tragedy. Figuring out whether or not your against or for the war. The war on vietnam started in 1954 and ended 1975.For the United States of America the Vietnam War lasted for 11years. The United States originally got involved to help stop the spread of communism. Can you believe it saw two presidential terms? During this war the Civil Rights Movement was going on full force. African Americans were volunteering to go fight for a country that wasn’t even willing to give them basic rights. Such as getting de-segregation abolished, non- discrimination, and the right vote. Despite how America felt they were still willing to risk their lives. There were many aspects that came along with this war. A lot of people supported the war out of ignorance. They didn’t know the full intentions and actions that were taking place. Violence was a major downside to the war, many lives were lost during this period. With the Guerilla Warfare tactics that were taking place--the dropping of Napalm on the Vietnamese civilians was devastating because this toxic chemical was being dropped regardless of if there were men, women, children or enemy soldiers being involved. The use of unrestricted force and violence, gave Lyndon B. Johnson authority to do as he pleased when passing the Tonkin Gulf Resolution. The amount of American Soldiers lost to this war is an unimaginable number. Young
differs for its scale, duration, and changes which it brought to American public in long-term
During the 1960s the Vietnam War took as many as 400,000 million lives including 58,000 americans. The US became involved with the war because politicians came to
The Vietnam War greatly changed America forever. It was the longest war fought in America’s History, lasting from 1955 to 1973. The Vietnam War tarnished America 's self image by becoming the first time in history the United States failed to accomplish its stated war aims, to preserve a separate, independent, noncommunist government. The war also had great effects on the American people. It was the first war ever broadcast on television. The public was able to see what happened on the battlefield. One of the chief effects of the war was the division it caused among the people. Not since the Civil War had America been so divided. This war would have lasting affects on the United States.
A terrible conflict left a mark on American History that had never been seen before. For the first time in the countries’s history people were not proud of their governments role in a war. Protest engulfed the Nation as people were disgusted with choices made by their leaders and the subsequent actions carried out by their soldiers. When the soldiers came back home they were not greeted with the praise that prior generations had gotten. They were given little attention and in some cases hated. This conflict of course was the Vietnam War.
The United States military spending accounts for nearly 54% of federal discretionary spending. Of the $1.1 trillion in discretionary spending in the United States, military spending accounts for the widest amount of spending with $598.5 billion being spent, roughly 54%. The section of federal discretionary spending that was even remotely close to the money spent on the military is the federal discretionary spending that the government accrued at just under $73 billion which accounts for only 6% of the $1.1 trillion in discretionary spending. In 2011 the United States government spent about $718 billion on defense and international security assistance, more than it spent on Medicare. United States military expenditures are roughly the size of the next nine largest military budgets around the world, combined.
The United States entered the Vietnam War in 1961 to prevent the spread of communism; the United States was afraid if North Vietnam successfully took over South Vietnam then they might have a chance to spread to other countries; thus, causing the Domino Theory. The United States’ fear of the Domino Theory transformed a civil war between two regions into a bloody miniature world war. The U.S. did nothing but lose there; they lost lives, equipment, time, kill more civilians than soldiers, and finally withdraw from the war. Even though the United States joined the Vietnam War to help stop the spread of communism, they never should have gotten involved, because it led to pointless fighting and
The Department of Defense (DOD) was recently approved a budget of $582.7 billion for 2017. $112.1 billion of this budget was specifically to “develop and procure equipment, technology, and capabilities…” [1].
