Why Is World War 1 Necessary

World War One, also known as the Great War, broke out across the world in August of 1914. European leaders expected it to be a short war, assuring their citizens that a resolution would occur before the start of the New Year (Stokstad). Those leaders could not have been any more wrong, because World War One lasted until November 11, 1918. The war goes down as one of the most destructive wars in all of history. An estimated ten million people lost their lives due to war efforts such as trench warfare and overall technological advances in weaponry. World War I (1914-1918) was one of the most gruesome wars in American history. It consisted mostly of trench warfare, war fought from trenches, and an estimated 30 million casualty count. It was hoped that this would be the "end to all wars", however the armistice signed sparked World War II.

World War I was a great loss both physically and emotionally. It was a conflict between the Allies and the Central Powers from 1914 to 1918. More than 15 million people were killed in battled, making it one of the most deadly conflicts in history. A world war because it involved the whole world. A total war because people used maximum resources for the purpose of the war. A modern war because the people used technological and industrial mobilization.

Many of the deadliest battles in history occurred during the First World War. Such battles include Ypres, Vimy Ridge, Marne, Cambria, Somme, Verdun, and Gallipoli. The combination of machine guns and barbed wire was responsible for the largest number of casualties during the First World War.

World War 1 was a moment in American history that will forever leave its mark. There were positive and negative factors that came as a result of this brutal bloodshed. There were new types of technology formed that proved useful to our military, new tools, and leaps in medical advances that that helped push the medical fields to its limits and a greater acceptance of women. Despite the bloodshed of world war 1, it was the impetus of the medical advances that help shape the world we live in today.

Completely altering what a war was in every aspect of the term, World War I caused immense devastation and havoc. Excluding the American Civil War, it was the first war that took place lasting any longer than a few months. This was due to countless innovations made in both war strategy and weaponry. Involving 32 countries and causing the deaths of over 17 million soldiers and civilians, World War I was one of the largest and most destructive wars at that point in modern history. Both men and women flocked to Europe to assist in any way possible. 324,000 Australians served overseas. Out of the 324,000, more than 60,000 Australians gave the ultimate sacrifice. The loss of 60,000 Australians during WWI was justified to a great extent. Firstly, Australians had a natural sense of patriotism towards Britain. Secondly, Australians received a sense of identity as a nation and many benefits were achieved as a result them participating in war.

World War I introduced the American military to the modern industrial war. The conflict with Mexico in 1914 gave the U.S an opportunity to try new technology such as motorization and aircraft. However, this was strong a small conflict that did not translate to that of the First World War. The American military was not modern yet compared to other powers.

Some of the people who suffered the most on WW1 were the soldiers and people who lived in the Home Front. Soldiers didn’t live a normal life, they lived in horrible conditions. World war one was fought by most of the countries of Europe. The actual fighting was on many different fronts. The Western Front was where most of the fighting between Germany and the Allies happened.

It also demoralized the Germans and its allies. When the US landed in France they quickly spread, and reinforced the front list on the East, and West. They brought vehicles, tanks, troops, supplies, guns, and artillery. When France asked for help they were asking for reinforcements and if they could command the new US troops. The US quickly said no saying that they joined the war on their own terms, and to fight as there own army, and country. The effects of World War I on Americans and America were so big that it affected the US political, economic and socially. Unlike the countries of Europe, the factories and home in the US were protected, and not destroyed. Manufacturing, production and efficiency increased through demand during the Great War. America had become a world industrial leader and the US economy was growing in an incredible rate. Profits were increasing, which led to the to one of the greatest times in US history called the “Roaring Twenties” with a massive rise in consumerism for the wealthy. On the other hand, inflation was high and companies and corporations began to reduce wages and started to fire or remove workers to reduce total costs. Workers began to protest against this issue and 1919 saw a massive wave of strikes. Competition for employment led to racial unrest and race riots breeding hatred and suspicion which spilled over into the Red Scare and the fear of communism. During the four years of World War 1, millions of people died. It began on July 28, 1914 in Europe and ended in November 11, 1918. For years tension has been growing between the European countries, especially from the wars over land in the Balkan area. World War 1, also known as the Great War, was a 4 year long event that was sparked by militarism, imperialism, and alliances between different countries.

World War I killed thousands of people on all sides of the war. Some say it was just the beginning of World War II. The outcomes for some of the countries was good and bad. No matter what, World War I was just a prelude for what was to come with World War II.
