Throughout these studies, each researcher had their own opinions and added their own flare and theories to the effects of cohabitation. The theories of the researches not only help readers understand some of the roles of cohabitation, but it also allows the researcher to develop new ideas and improve previous thoughts. These theories help us discover why marriage is decreasing with divorce rates increasing and why the compatibility between cohabiting partners is so strong. Throughout the research that I gathered that the main theory was the fact that changes in family life in the United States has a strong effect on the role of cohabitation. In many of the studies researchers believed that cohabiting couples tended to be more open and tolerant to new ideas, which is the cause in the number of married couple to be less. Researchers also believed that because of the convenience and benefits of cohabitation, many couples dont feel that its to get married. This disinclination to get married is effected by todays society 's acceptance to nontraditional courtship roles. The last theory that guided some researchers was the issue of compatibility. Many researchers believe that cohabitation should have no effect on the process of marriage, rather it is the compatibility factor, which allows partners to go separate ways and find new people.
