Fictional novels are not only stories made up by the author, but are tools that educate people, helping them learn to read and comprehend information. Fictional books allow the reader to expand their vocabulary and their mind. In the article, “Why Our Future Depends on Libraries, Reading and Daydreaming” by Neil Gaiman, Gaiman states that people who are limited in academics will more likely end up in prison. Gaiman writes, “How many prisoners are there going to be...they could predict it very easily using a pretty simple algorithm, based about asking what percent of ten and eleven year olds couldn't read” (Gaiman 6). Gaiman explains that by using a simple method, they are able to find a correlation between illiteracy and crime. When adolescents
In the novel Fahrenheit 451, Guy Montag believes that people should read books and is willing to sacrifice himself, his career, and all he’s worked for to fight for what’s right. People that are illiterate are
Meghan Cox Gurdon’s article has many varying points of attack, while Sherman focuses all of his resources on one point; young adult (YA) literature isn’t detrimental. Gurdon contends the argument that youths being exposed to darker themes makes the themes less effective and ultimately undermines the intensity of the subjects, as well as spread them. She states this as “Self-destructive adolescent behaviors are observably infectious and have periods of vogue. That is not to discount the real suffering that some young people endure; it is an argument for taking care” (par. 13). Gurdon says young adult literature takes away a child’s innocence and negatively affects moral development (par. 6). In contrast, Sherman believes that YA books help people dealing with those troubles to overcome and accept them. He states, “... Does she believe that a YA novel about murder and rape will somehow schock a teenage
Prose assumes that most high school students do not read on their own and that students do not enjoy the literature they read in school; she also assumes that many students stop reading in their adult life and that what books students read in high school affect them for the rest of their lives.
The government is reducing the chances for everyone to think by taking away books from people to read in many communities around the world. For example in F451, as Montag returns from work, he encounters with a curious, open minded, 17 year old named Clarisse, who asks him, “Do you ever read any of the books you burn? He responded by saying, “That’s against the law.”(8) Clarisse wonders if Montag reads any of the books that he destroys, but realizes that in this society in which they live, it is against the law to read books. They most likely made this law because they didn’t want them knowing anything about the past, which would work as a caution for those living in the future. Later on in the story when Montag returned to the firehouse, he looked past the other firemen and “Gazed beyond them to the wall with the typed lists of a million forbidden book.”(34) Montag is starting to get curious and starts questioning if the idea to
The text I know why the caged bird cannot read Francine Prose describes the reasons why high school students seem to dislike reading. She supports her idea with saying the problem starts with teaching moral values through literature, instead of teaching the value of literature itself. She also blames the education system that enforces these books to be placed in the curriculum. These books only focus on a reoccurring problem like racism religion or gender identity. And the curriculum works around that to teach the student right from wrong and moral values. Which puts the student on a path of hatred to literature.
Lessons learned from reading fiction can be very useful to use while approaching your issues. Fiction fills our beliefs and desires and teaches us things we have didn’t know. Evidence I can pull to help support my claim is that real world problems are no joke. These issues shouldn't be taken lightly. Fiction can teach you life lessons that you may or may not known. The school board needs to think this through. If the school board makes this decision on taking away fiction from school, today's society, in my opinion, will get mad. Today's society can tear people down easily. They can adapt to many different things at once if they wanted to. They can make things worse for people or make things good for people. Not only is this book about fictional issues, it’s also about real world problems and how fiction can relate to us, the readers. “Researchers found that people who read Literary fiction, led to better results in every subject. That same year, they found that people who read fiction had a higher brain activity than others who didn't.” Fiction, in my opinion, should be taken down, because of this
Should fiction be in the curriculum? Taking fiction out of the curriculum can hurt students a lot. Fiction books teach about issues that are faced by people everyday. That most people probably don't see often. When others are faced with it daily. In this essay i will explain the problem presented in my book, gang violence. I will compare the story to everyday problems with gang violence. And explain why it is important to keep fiction books in the curriculum.
In english class, one is most likely to read at least one fiction novel throughout the school year. Fiction books, while reading them, create images in your mind, therefore making them enjoyable to read. Novels often express a central theme that teaches the reader a lesson or helps them critically think about morality, their future, their fears, or their purpose in life. Books excites the imagination, and reflects the world we live in. For example, in “All American Boys” by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely, the book includes events that fall under police brutality.
December 7, 1941, was on of the worst attacks ever on the United States. Out of that day, 2,403 soldiers were killed in action, 1,178 were wounded in action. Through the misjudgments of numerous U.S. armed forces personnel, the Japanese were able to carry out this terrible attack, which crippled the United States’ Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
Literature is a work of art that is constructed with the fundamental purpose of conveying meaning and messages to readers. Although the idea that is expressed is decided by the author, its underlying messages can be interpreted in various ways by different readers. Literature often explores the gap between reality and imagination. Such an examination can easily lead to a false sense of reality, which promotes the oversimplification of life at a great cost. By oversimplifying reality, people may turn a blind eye to issues that need to be addressed for the sake of social justice. Often times, facing reality is despised because it may create problems that individuals are unable to solve. This is important to note because literature has the
One of the greatest things about nursing is that we have the opportunity to share with different cultures and learn about them. Our patients are complex; they each have their religion, culture, and life choices. Delivering health advice and not knowing much about a patient’s cultural background will influence how the patient may perceive the nurses’ advice. The article that I did my research on was published in 2011, by Perez-Avila, Sobralske and Katz; the name of the article is “No Comprendo: Practice Considerations When Caring for Latinos With Limited English Proficiency in the United States Health Care System”. In the United States, Hispanics form the largest minority. Most of this community has limited English
The article I chose to read was “Fiction vs. Informational Texts, Which Will Kindergartners Choose”. The article asks will kindergartners choose fiction or non-fiction books when given the option. The teacher decided to run a nineteen week study on her class. To conduct the study she came up with her own questions. She found that kindergartners are more drawn to non-fiction books. The article also mentions that young children are more likely to read non-fiction books because of their curiosity of their world and how it works. The author also notes that children do enjoy reading fiction books. She also notes that boys were more likely to read non-fiction books over fiction books. At the end of her study she had the children tell her the difference
The school board is not quite certain that schools should continue to include fiction in the curriculum. However, if fiction is taught to students it may actually teach life lessons. Fictional literature can change someone's perspective on, what problems we may come across. For instance, a fictional book can help us relate to all the controversial problems that do occur in today's society. I disagree with the school board's thoughts about completely banning it. This type of literature can deepen our knowledge and teach us about things that we don’t experience on a day to day basis.
Reading develops a person’s creativity. Unlike movies where everything is determined by the producer, writer and director, books allow students to create in their minds how a particular character looks like or imagine how a scene plays out.
The library is a wonderful place to go to if you would like a quiet place to work. I like being at the library because it is filled with knowledge, and there are many different books that interest me. I enjoy going to the library because walking there clears my mind. Also, there are many books that are available for the public to read and it is a quiet place to do work.
