Katy Mallory Jennifer Langi English 1010 Section 003 12 April 2012 Why Do Parents Kill Their Children? Even though many mothers and fathers are loving and figures that should be looked up too, they can also be deadly and dangerous. My question is: why would a mom and dad would want to kill their child? I am interested in this because our world depends on fathers and mothers and it is interesting how in many ways we can depend on them but in some ways we can’t. Parents all over the world have problems with their lives and many lash out and do things they wouldn't ordinarily do because of relationships, marriage, or financial problems. A quote from The Nature and Extent of Child Homicide and Fatal Abuse stated that “The killing of a …show more content…
I did not know men killed their children in different ways like a mother does. This helped me understand a little better why a father would kill his kids because sometimes fathers want to protect their kids too. Children are more likely to be killed in their own home by members of their own family than anywhere else or by anyone in society (Browne 312). I learned in my research there is also a common type of filicide called infanticide. I discovered information on this in a journal (The nature and extent of Child Homicide and Fatal Abuse). It says infanticide is described as ‘the killing of a child under the age of twelve months by the child’s mother when the balance of her mind was disturbed because she was not fully recovered from the effect of childbirth. (Morris and Wilczynski 1993) When the dead child is over 12 months old, more than three quarters of the mother’s charged were convicted of manslaughter and the one quarter was imprisoned. This shows that even babies can be killed. I think that is a scary thing. This helps with my question because parents kill their baby because they are disturbed, or even sometimes they are upset about the childbirth. While I was researching on Infanticides I came across a case on infanticide that I felt would relate to my paper. The article was written by Robb Quinn who is from the Newsers staff. The article is Mom charged with murder of five babies and it is from the website newser.com. This article talks about this a
Throughout most of history and in various cultures, father figures have been viewed as having the highest power in the household, and thus, fathers often were the deciding force in whether their child lived, worked, ate, or died. Infanticide has a long, brutal history around the globe. Infants have often been abused, drowned, harmed, and murdered simply because it was tradition to test if the infant had the capacity to fight to survive.
This particular case is a murder case, the killing is described as a brutal fashion from someone with a deep hatred for the victim. This cold-blooded murder's remained a mystery that baffled the police for three years. The officers of the law would have never suspected the killer to be a 17 year-old girl. Christine Paolilla was just a bright little girl until a number of misfortunes happened to her family, that changed her life forever. Parents, Charles and Lori Paolilla with little brother John Paolilla. Her father died in a consruciton accident. Could the killing of an unborn disabled child be considered acceptable in today’s society? Selective infanticide is a very controversial topic that many have argued about over past years. In her article “Unspeakable Conversations” disabilities activist and lawyer Harriet McBryde Johnson demonstrates her viewpoint on this issue. She writes this article as a story, with herself being the narrator. It follows her journey as she feuds with Peter Singer, a Princeton University professor, who has an opposing perspective regarding the killing of unborn disabled children. With this in mind, Johnson reveals her point of view using the strategy of a Rogerian argument and the rhetorical elements of
The second article by Marquis will demonstrate why killing a fetus is a crucial wrong. He will also be including how an anti-abortionist and pro-choicer opinionate in cases like these. The following paragraph’s will go more into depth about each article over abortion.
According to the (Association, 2015) there is insignificant acknowledgement of parental insistence. In the last several year in the United States the countless number of children under 5 years of age are killed, nevertheless they are murdered by the hands of their parents which is a high percentage that can be equally put in separation with mother and father.
Historical background was provided in great detail on infanticide in the opening section, this set a precedent that these topics were researched in great length. Throughout the chapter, Davis provided historical support on the other topics presented in this chapter through court cases and research studies. Davis’ support was most beneficial when presented in the form of court cases that have shaped the laws present today and even those that are not commonly known.
I shared in the first discussion for this book about the first killing I have known by someone close to me. A teen whose widowed father was dating my widowed mother. The partisan side of the victim’s family painted an overly exaggerated defense against him. I like everyone else wanted to witness the trial, but our parents would not allow us, and the school prohibited any student from missing school to attend unless they were called as a witness. On the day of the sentencing, I recalled my mother saying it was not a fair sentencing. I was barely a teen and all I can remember from the trial was that the judge
Many people might wonder why kids are born differently than what most consider “normal.” Multiple substances are effects that cause these fetus to develop wrong and not in usual routine that is normally seen in pregnancies. If a pregnant woman chose the wrong temptation and consumed substances that are known to cause damage and can be fatal to a baby, these mothers are making the worst mistake of taking the life of their own child away before the baby can experience what life is. Carrying a baby in the womb is one of the most heaviest challenges a woman can face and many females go wrong by falling into various temptations by not having enough information in pregnancies and going on with their daily lifestyle instead of learning about instant fetal deaths.
1969 was not a normal year for eight month pregnant Teresa Keeler and her unborn baby. Sadly Teresa was beaten very badly by her ex-husband. Before the incident happen her husband told Teresa that he was going stomp out of her .with God mercy, the unborn baby was delivered a live with fractured skull. The persecutor tried to accuse the ex-husband with the beating his wife and attempt of murder of the fetus. Unfortunately, the California supreme court dismiss the murder charge by calming that the fetus was not a human being. Due to the public pressure the court had to amend the rule saying fetus murder only apply if the fetus is eight week and older.
In the article " MMA Fighter Donates Son's Organs After Toddler Killed by Alleged Drunk Driver" by Mellissa Chan, talks about how a 72 year old woman named Donna Marie Higgins was driving while being drunk and killed a 15 month old baby . Donna came across a crosswalk where a fifteen year old was crossing with a baby in a stroller. She then hit her SUV into both the baby and the fifteen year old aunt. The fifteen year old was found with suffering leg injuries and the baby still in the stroller but wasn't breathing. They were rushed to the hospital were the 15 month old baby was fighting for his life. "About an hour ago, our baby was declared brain dead. He tried to fight so hard. He even died at one point but they brought him back", Marcus
Many women with newborns have horrible thoughts of killing there children in different ways, but most who have such thoughts do not hurt their babies. Some women fear that the worse these thoughts are, the sicker they have to be and that is not true. When they feel safe enough to talk about these thoughts and don’t feel judged, they often experience relief, even if they continue to have the thoughts. The specialists also talk about how many children with mothers facing this disease are removed from their homes. Rather than causing newborns unneeded trauma by removing them from their mothers, society should allow mothers to talk about their condition with doctors and find
The media broadcast of parents killing their children dominates local news, also known as filicide, the criminal act parents commit against their children. According to the FBI statistics about five infants under the age of 1 are killed each week in the United States. No particular geographical location exists for this type of crimes; filicide occurs everywhere and in any place. It appears that the seasons; summer, spring, winter or fall, weekend or weekday, nothing put a halt to the crime. The research noted that the most common methods of killing by parents were with “personal weapons,” such as choking, beating, or drowning. Caucasian men and women between the age of 20 to 30 middle and lower class parents are likely to commit filicide. Three sociological theories, conflict, structural functionalism and symbolic interaction explain the different aspects of the family institution and the problem of why these types of crime occur. Observation of the family, not just the infant may detect a problem before it turns into a criminal act.

This is case that faces Mary Barnett. The issue in this case is that On January 23, the litigant, Mary Barnett, left Chicago to visit her life partner in San Francisco having left her six-month-old little girl, Alison, unattended in the apartment. Mary Barnett returned home a week later to find that her child had died of dehydration. She called the police and at first, to let them know that she had left her kid with a baby sitter. She later expressed that she had left the child and she didn 't mean to return, and that she knew Alison would die in a day or two. She has been accused of wrongdoing of second-degree murder; purposeful homicide without intention. In the event that she is sentenced, she could face up to eighteen years in prison. This piece of writing tries to give the verdict of the case after critically examining both prosecution and defendant side.
