School Should Start at a Later Time? Teenagers need between 8 ½ and 9 ½ hours of sleep each night. With all of the homework they get every day and how early they have to get up in the morning it’s hard for teenagers to get the recommended amount of sleep each night. Teenagers don’t get enough sleep because school starts too early.
Not getting enough sleep can cause long term and short term health issues. Sleep deprivation can damage the immune system. It can also lead to an unhealthy body weight, bad memory, poor concentration and mood swings (Gilchrist). When people have poor concentration while they’re driving it can cause an accident injuring not only you, but other drivers and pedestrians.. A school in Fayette County, Kentucky changed the start of schools to an hour later. Even though the

Schools might have to buy more buses and hire more drivers if they start at a later time in the morning. (O’Neill). Another option is for the schools to switch the high school bus route with the elementary school bus route. This is what they did at schools in Columbia, Missouri. The school had to find a different solution because the parents complained that they didn't want their kids to be waiting for the bus in the cold, and dark in the wintertime. They also complained that their kids eating breakfast at 7:00 am would be hungry by 10:00 am. It should also be easier for the elementary students to switch to the earlier bus route. Elementary students usually go to bed earlier and wake up earlier while high schoolers usually go to bed later and wake up later. Elementary students are usually more awake during the morning than high schoolers are (High schools with late start times). Parents are worried that if school starts later then teenagers won't have the skill of maintaining a busy schedule, but there would actually be less time after school for socializing, activities and homework
Each year, exhausted teenagers leave themselves to another day of battling their bodies clocks so they can get in class on time. It's outstanding that teenagers who don't get eight hours of rest a night confronts a large number of issues. That is the reason why both the American Institute of Pediatrics and the Centers for Disease Control recommend shifting middle- and high-school start times to 8:30 a.m or later. However, during 2011-2012 school year, the latest statistics accessible — just 17.7 % of the national public middle, high and combined schools met the 8:30 a.m. rule, and almost 40% began before 8 a.m. In California, the normal start time was 8:07 a.m.
Teenagers need more sleep. If schools start school later, students would be less tired. A study of eight schools in Minnesota started school 1 hour later and grades and morale went up and tardiness went down. It has been scientifically proven in a test they did in Minnesota that 8 schools stated later and most of the students grades went up they were happier and everyone seemed more
“Making teens start school in the morning is cruel” says brain doctor. Mary Carskadon at Brown University has shown that teenagers need about nine hours a night to maintain full alertness and academic performance. Getting up at 6:00 am is totoo early. We should have a later start time because we need more sleep to focus, tTeens need a certain amount of sleep, and we need to stop dozing off in class.
In Justin O’Neil’s article, “Should Schools Start Later”, he says, “ School bus schedules are arranged to meet the needs of not just one school, but all the schools in a district…..” and then proceeds to say “Later start times would mean some districts might have to invest in additional buses and drivers, which can be expensive.” This explains that if we started school later, buses will have to figure out a way to get children from every school they are responsible for, if there are no staggered times. If they could not solve this problem, we would need more buses and drivers. Transportation will then turn into another dreadful problem that we would have to fix. Also, think about how the bus driver would probably get home later. This could interfere with their personal
Students never want to get up early in the morning to go to school. But that can possibly change if school started later in the morning. There are many benefits of school starting later.Especially for middle and high school students.
The article Should School Stay Earlier? by elenam112 states “This means the school would be open longer, resulting in larger electrical and heating bills.” Schools would need to stay open later at night for after school activities and stay open early in the morning for students who are dropped off early. Schools may even have to purchase lights for after school activities. Schools would also have to change their bus transportation systems which are designed to run as efficiently and inexpensively as possible. The average national cost that schools need to pay for each student’s bus transportation is $459. Changing the system could result in many more
First, schools should not start later because transportation would be an issue. Some parents may have trouble getting their kids to school because of their work schedule. For example, Liz Szabo, from USA Today, she quoted Daniel Domenech, in her article “Study: Most teens start school too early in morning to get enough sleep” states, "It's a logistical nightmare," said Daniel Domenech, executive director of AASA, the School Superintendents Association., who said that school districts have to consider the cost of school buses, as well as traffic...” This is significant because most school districts have at least one elementary school, one middle school, and one high school that would need busses to take them to and from school. Parents would not benefit if school started later because parents would now have to worry about being late to
Getting enough sleep is important for health and safety. If kids don’t get enough sleep then they can have trouble with mental health and physical health. Also if kids are walking or driving to school in the morning when it is dark then they can have
As children’s doctor and sleep expert Daniel Lewin stated, “The call for later school start times is an essential movement for keeping tweens and teens healthy.” Several reasons why school hours are unjust due to early start times include first, students not being able to focus as easily in class. Next, students also cannot participate to their full capability when their mind and body are not rested properly. Also, recent studies have concluded that teenagers cause more automobile accidents on their way to school, due to being sleep deprived. A negative perspective considering a later school start revolves around the idea that through history school hours have consistently ended before a specific time. This seems to support the fact that “after school
How would you feel if your parent couldn’t take you to school or drive you to the bus because schools starts after they would already need to be at work? How would you like if practices or outside actives were cut short due to school start time? Schools began starting earlier in the 1990s. The average time schools start is 8:03 am. Only 17.7% of 39,700 public middle and high schools start at 8:30 am or later. I believe that the earlier start time is an advantage. With schools being a big advantage to help us plan for life, we need to make sure we use this precious time to learn. If school would start later there would be less time for outside activities and practices, your parent mostly likely couldn’t help you get ready in the morning and drive you to school because they would already be at work, and truly if school starts later, then most people would go to bed later.
My argument is about why schools should start later. I think schools should start later because students will be more focused and be able to get better sleep. The administration is against this because they think we should be in school longer but this also helps teachers because students won’t fall asleep in class. The administration is complaining that the schools test scores are low but maybe it’s because not everyone gets enough sleep. It would help teachers a lot because not only will you have enough sleep but you’ll also have energy and make it through the day.
Teenagers are only getting 6-7 hours of sleep a night, while they need 10. Fifty-nine percent of middle school students and eighty-seven percent of high school students are getting less than the recommended 8 1/2 to 9 ½ hours of sleep a night. Schools that have a start time of 8:30 a.m. or later give students the opportunity to get the recommended amount of sleep on school nights.
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! I am pushed out of my blissful dream and pulled into reality, my eyes don’t want to open, just for the noise to stop so I can go back to that wonderful peaceness in my warm bed. It’s my alarm going off, for a second I consider hitting the snooze for those extra five minutes, but I know if I do it’ll be another rushing-to-get-ready-morning. Schools should really start later! Ninety percent of teens are sleep deprived and I am one of them. Starting school about an hour later has many benefits as shown in hundreds of schools around the country. Some of these benefits include: students feeling more awake, better test scores, better attention spans and improved health. Changing school times can help students exponentially.
Almost every day high school students are waking up around six o’clock in the morning to get ready for school, some even earlier than that. Nearly every morning students are waking up without adequate sleep. If sleep is one of the most essential needs of the body in order to grow and develop, shouldn’t we be more aware of how much it affects students everyday performance? The ways in which students are affected by sleep-deprivation is precisely why school needs to start later.
We live in an age when many growing adolescents are constantly fighting their natural body clocks. It could potentially be one of the biggest issues facing our high school systems. Many school’s across America have started to push back their school start times. Is it worth it? The answer is yes. School should start later in order to unlock our nation’s high school potential.
