Why Should Children Get Vaccination?

“Why should I get vaccinated? It is just a waste of time and money. I never got vaccinated before and never will.” That’s what one of my colleagues said when he was asked to get vaccinated during the outbreak of SARS, severe acute respiratory syndrome, few years ago in Mongolia. Then, I had reasoned him that disease comes all of a sudden and it is more serious than he thinks. I agree great response Sarah! Very informative post. Kayley I agree with you that it's kind of dumb that parents are opting out of vaccinating their children. Vaccinations have been around for a while now and they have helped more than they have harmed. I think some parents are jumping on the fad of not vaccinating their children because in the last few years it has been in the media and there are a few celebrities who are against vaccinating and I feel like they do have some influence on people. I also don't believe vaccinations are linked to problems and people are just looking for a reason why problems happen to their children and feel like they need an explanation and why not blame it on vaccinations.

For many years, there has been a controversy about whether or not vaccinations should be mandated for everyone. In the United States, many diseases such as polio, diphtheria, measles, and whooping cough used to be extremely common, until vaccinations came around and started preventing these diseases. The main point for vaccines is to prepare a person’s immune system for any possible attack of a disease that comes in the future; a person’s body will be prepared to fight off the disease with the vaccine (“Basics”). Vaccines have the ability to prevent many cases of these diseases in advanced, but there are people who think vaccines are unnatural and should not be required for their children. It is said that immunity in child vaccines are about 90%-100%, which is an increase over the past few years (“Childhood”). Although many Americans believe that vaccines are unsafe and cause autism in children, vaccinations for children should be mandatory because they can save a child’s life, create herd immunity in a community, and they have been proven safe/cost-effective.

There are many reasons why it is important to be properly vaccinated. The first reason why it is important to be properly vaccinated is because vaccination reduces the number of people who are at risk for a communicable disease. Second, it is important to be properly vaccinated because vaccines cause your immune system to produce disease – fighting antibodies without causing the disease itself. The third reason why it is important to be properly vaccinated is because vaccines will help keep you healthy so you don’t get the diseases. These are the three reasons why it is important to be properly vaccinated.

In early years when there wasn’t vaccination for diseases a lot children and young adults would die at a young age. A lot people in earlier years did live that that long. Now a day people live longer because of these vaccinations. People should get vaccinated because it cheaper than getting sick, it avoids transmitting diseases to other humans, and also safe a person live longer.

On my commute home, I read the Metro newspaper. One of the articles discussed NYC schools and their vaccination rates. I found that NYC schools had 98% vaccination rate overall. I already knew getting vaccinated is important, but I realize that if a child didn't a shot they aren't allowed in a school. The article supplied details pertaining to the ages at which vaccinations are required; 2 months to 18 years. As I read the article, it reminded me of a show I watched a few years ago where these people from this church wouldn't let the ambulance in because they didn't believe in medicine. The article mentioned this as well, saying, in some states, someone's religious or even philosophical beliefs don't exempt their child from getting vaccinations.

Thank you for your concern, but I WILL NOT be vaccinating my child, I understand that I gave her your namesake, and I know that you are for the vaccination of children but there is a method to my so called madness in not wanting to vaccinate her. Firstly, many people are bullied into vaccinating their children because other parents claim that an unvaccinated child is putting their vaccinated children at risk, but how is my unvaccinated child putting your vaccinated child at risk if you’re so sure that vaccines work? This is because of a very old hypothesis called “Herd-immunity” It says that the more people are immune to an infection, the less likely someone with a defection in their immune system is to come in contact with it, the moment that an outbreak happens, doctors claim that it’s because of a break in the barrier of the herds immunity, pro-vaccination parents quickly back up these statements with a blog report. They use them to attack anti-vaccine parents, accusing them of “putting vaccinated kids at risk due to a breakdown in herd immunity.” Which as I’ve stated before is terrible logic, and infection doesn’t necessarily spread by coming into contact with another person. Vaccinations are an incredible innovation, and without them, our world would be quite different. These lifesaving inventions have always been quite controversial, and without knowing what they are fully capable of, some people and governments won't take any further actions to get vaccinations to people who are in need. For example, in India, the government is very detached from the issue, and hasn't invested in the heavily needed vaccines for its people. Especially the children, as one third of the children unvaccinated in the entire world reside in India. Also, Recent events in countries have drastically impacted how many people receive vaccines. As in the Central African Republic, the country has been in a fuming ongoing civil war that has killed over 6,000 people from its upbringing in 2012. People in the Central African Republic have been displaced, and are in desperate need other things, such as food or water. The longer a person goes without a vaccine, the higher the chance is of contracting a disease or virus. In Nigeria alone, “the national data showed less than 30% coverage for all antigens, and this decreased to 12.9% [in] 2003” (NCBI). Vaccines are a significant problem today because people are very uneducated about them.

The vaccine, unfortunately has never been completely trusted. Some people who feel skeptical of vaccines are parents, and refuse to vaccinate their children. Although people may argue they should have the freedom to decide whether to get vaccinated; too many people refusing vaccines will cause consequences such as fatal outbreaks and costs.

People should get vaccines, so they don’t get sick, get other people sick or get a disease. Vaccines help your body create antibodies for that disease.

Take a look at the world around you. Whether you are in America or a third world country you are surrounded by some sort of disease. Preventable or not, the cure for many diseases is through vaccinations early on in childhood. Beginning at birth, parents are encouraged to immunize their children to prevent dangerous diseases they may come in to contact with. Parents are outraged that they no longer have the choice as to whether or not they can vaccinate their children. These groups insist on not vaccinating their children and they seem to be doing a fairly decent job at influencing others. All and all vaccines aren’t nearly as harmful as people draw them out to be and people fear vaccinations because of their own naiveté, vaccines have existed for a long time and are beneficial to not only individual humans as organisms but society as a whole.
