The American sport of football is fading. Numbers in the sport are slowly lowering. For many reasons, injuries are the leading one. The problem is, if there are no high school players there are no college players. If there are no college players then there are no professional players. Even though concussions are a major issue in the sport and causes students not to be able to do some of the curriculum in school. Football should be allowed at a high school level. Students do better in school so they can stay eligible to play in the sport. It also teaches valuable life skills. High school football has been in families and towns for years, even though the sport is under attack because it is slowly fading. Less and less kids are playing the sport every year. There are about one million kids who play football in the United States (Tribune 3). There are only about one hundred thousand …show more content…
It has some of the newest technology that is available to the sport. Some of the helmets on tv watching college and professional football. The players mostly receivers, quarterbacks and running backs have them they are a almost hexagon looking in shape on the front top of the helmet where your forehead is. This is a concussion helmet it absorbs some of the hit just as shoulder pads do. Also they fit the helmets loser now so when you get hit it also absorbs some of the shock. They also have to follow a special concussion protocol (editorial board). Sometimes you can't return to the game until you have passed the concussion testing. Also there is about one million high schoolers playing football and out of those one million there is only three to five deaths a year. They are also trying to pass a law stating that every school has to have a sport trainer that has to be present at every practice and every game. Because some schools had part time trainers. There are also some schools that don't even have a trainer at all (Sanchez
High school sports are an important aspect of a young person’s life because it could decide their college, careers, and determine their social circle. High school football is a time where a fellowship occurs, not only with students, but the community also. There is on going issues with contact sports such as should there be rule changes or eliminate the game completely because of head injuries occurring too often. The problem is deciding whether the risks of playing these sports are worth it in the end. Are the risks of football worth the entertainment or should should football be banned for safety reasons? Doctor Anne McKey stated that if anything, we should have rule changes and equipment changes because it’s not worth the risk (CNN, 2012).
Some people think that high school football should be banned however, this should not happen for many reasons. Doctors and school boards are debating on if high school football should be banned due to the heath risk. If football is the most popular sport in the U.S. why would we take it away from so many high school students who enjoy playing the game. There is the same risk playing other sports. Even though there is a chance for concussion in football; high school football should not be banned because technology is make the game safer, and it is just as safe as any other
I think that kids shouldn't play football because it is too dangerous. People get concussions every day when they play football. After repeatedly bashing their skulls football players get concussions, caused by the spongy tissue in the brain hitting the hard skull. It is very painful to get a concussion, and leaves permanent damage to the brain. As well as being excruciatingly painful, and possibly never being the same, with many issues. "In milder cases, athletes can be left with lifelong pain, memory lapses, aggression, depression, personality changes, and many other issues."(Shotz[11]). This sport just keeps getting more and more dangerous, manifesting on itself, becoming more and more brutal as players become more competitive. There are
Many people debate whether football should be allowed in high schools. Football is undoubtedly linked to injuries and a case can be made that it causes tension between students. Benefits of football include, teaching students valuable skills, helping communities come together, and also teaching students that physical fitness is crucial to a healthy life. In my accord, the benefits of football in high schools far outweigh the risks.
High school sports such as football, should be banned because it causes continuous concussions that result in brain damage. A concussion is a brain injury caused by a hit to the head or a rough shaking of the head and body. Concussions in high school sports especially football are very common and the impact injures the brain. The article, High school Concussions, conducted a
Football, ever since it began, has had the constant question of should it be banned. Footballs origins began back in ancient Greece where even then it was known as a very rough and brutal game. When football came to England it was thought to be so rough that kings Henry II and Henry IV both actually banned it. A lot has changed since those times in history. We now have equipment for the game and every year the equipment keeps evolving into a more safety conscious design for the player. Rules for the game also keep changing throughout the years with the player’s safety in mind as well. Because of these changes, it has
Did you know 66% of boys between the ages of 5-18 years old play an organized sport? Over 550,000 boys participate in basketball for a school sponsored team in the U.S, ranked in the top 5 most played sports in the U.S. by youth is baseball/ teeball and last but not least football is played among young boys with more than 1 million interscholastic participants. If I were asked if I were to allow my son to play football I will say yes, because it promotes teamwork, keeps children busy (out of trouble) and it is a safe sport.
First of all, my first reason is kids won't have fun. Kids these days always talk about sports what sports they are doing outside of school and what sport they are going to do in school. Kids probably can't wait to join football,
What is Football? Football is a brutal sport that can have lifelong consequences. It’s dangerous and overrated. It has become a business that is only concerned about winning at the cost of maiming players, but people love it. Football players suffer more concussions than athletes in any other high school sport. Is this beloved game worth the risks, or should schools do away with it? We shouldn’t let teens ruin their lungs with cigarettes, so why would we allow them to damage their brains in the name of football? I have never played the sport, but I have friends that play and they’re always injured in some way. It’s just pointless. High school football players can undergo significant brain changes after just one season, even if they don’t get
The School Board should not offer middle school tackle football. There is a high risk of injuries including concussions, primarily in middle school children. These injuries can have long lasting effects, especially if repeated. Therefore, offering tackle football in middle schools poses a huge risk for middle schoolers, although there are few benefits, would do more harm than good.
Do you keep yourself up to date with the news, ESPN, or the National Football League? If so, then you have probably heard of the many problems of the long-term effects of football-related concussions. Even kids in high school who have suffered multiple concussions are immediately put at risk for death related cause of such a severe head injury. As committees create and change the rules to protect players from such a traumatic brain injury, it is up to coaches and officials to enforce these rules to protect players. According to the Mayo Clinic Staff, a concussion is defined as a traumatic brain injury that alters the way your brain functions. There are many different ways to receive a concussion, but
Teaching players, coaches and family members about the outcome of concussions, will help further aware the people about the problems of having physical contact in the game. For example, writer Janie Cournoyer from the Journal of Athletic Training mentions that about 25% of all participants had zero knowledge on what concussion was and about 54% had it explained to by their parents. In addition, the writer also states that most athletes fail to report their symptoms of a concussion due to their lack of knowledge of it. This is very dangerous because it puts the athlete in a dangerous state if he or she doesn't get checked. Some football players get on the field not knowing a single thing about how concussions occur. They know that football is a physical sport and that you can get severely hurt but they may not know the future symptoms that come when playing football. In addition, writer Holly Schmie from the Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance states that the only way to reduce the percentage of people who don't know anything about concussions is to consider establishing a Concussion Management Policy. This policy mentioned by the author states that the approach will be focused on “developing a concussion management team and a policy requiring baseline pre-concussion testing within the school district”. It's important that every school has proper
There are fewer than 2000 professional football players but compare that to 26 million youth football players who need to be helped by concussion related technology. While the NFL has put in technology to help prevent and spot concussions millions of youth football players are still not helped by this tech. This means that kids who play football are always exposed to concussions. Companies like Riddell or Schutt have to make youth sports like football their number one priority. In touch sports like football you have to expect a concussion from a player, but when you hear that a player is out of a game because of a concussion every week then you ask why? Why aren’t there some sensors that can record the hit, or sensors that can spot the concussion? Perhaps even hire an athletic trainer to be on the sidelines.
Have you ever thought about the safety of your friends or family that play such a rough sport such as football, and are scared that they can have an injury that can permanently hurt them forever such as a concussion that can ultimately lead to a brain disease. Well that is the reason why not as many parents aren't letting their kids play football. At little league and such a small age they aren't happening as often but are still an issue but at a bigger stage such as the NFL they are a huge issue and occur more than they should. Ever since the NFL and Riddell have been making stronger and supposedly safer helmets concussions have been happening more than ever. Also researchers from (“Frontline”) say about
The main reason football should be banned is because of the high risk of receiving a concussion. A concussion is known as a brain injury caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head that disrupts the brain’s normal function. When receiving a serious strike to the head, the brain is violently shaken around, continuously bumping the skull. Football is a direct contact sport. The players are all at risk of getting tackled, whether it is during practices or games. Although most coaches and teams have certain regulations against tackling, players continue to go against these rules. According to the Head Case Company, an average of 33% of concussions in football occur during practices. The source also states
