ECONOMICS - The Necessity to Become Independent

Why should tiny Britain control a big country like America? For instance Britain and the thirteen colonies were about 3000 miles so why would they tell the colonist be told what to do? In order for them to become their own country they would have to fight for their independence. Thomas Paine wrote Common Sense, in 1776, to explain the reasons on why they wanted to become their own country. In addition Paine explains how economics was a big cause on wanting independence from Britain. The cause of the American Revolution that led to the establishment of the U.S. due to the economic implications were taxation, commerce, and expansion.

Commerce had been around for years and still to this day it is going on. In the 1700s, the slave trade was very common almost everywhere in the world. Most slaves were captured from Africa and taken to the colonies. The triangle trade route was very useful when slave trading because it would benefit Britain. They would build their country’s wealth by exporting more goods than they were importing making them more money. Especially since Britain made the Proclamation of 1763. This affected all the colonies and the colonist were not happy about it. Expansion was what many of the colonists wanted to do for a couple reasons; one they were growing in population and second there was more land meaning more possible resources. The reason they did not want the colonist to move west was for the benefit of the British. If they were to move west and leave the coasts, it would be difficult to collect their taxes and trade with them.
