William Bradford was a very highly self educated author who was a governor of the plymouth colony five times. He wrote about the colony which we did read and then he also had published his personal diary. William had many experiences in his life that were not favorable but even though he was going through them he overcame them and shaped plymouth into a great colony.
So William grew up in Yorkshire, England. As a young boy William was surrounded by death. When he was one he lost his father, then after a few years with his mother she sent him to live with his grandparents. Two years later his grandmother passed away and then a year later his grandfather passed as well. So then he moved back with his mother who wasn’t very happy to see him, but hey I

Eventually he became bored of this lifestyle and picked up literature and became fascinated with words and religion. He soon went to school and made a friend who introduced him to the separatist church which back then was a church that went against the church of England and that's illegal. So after spending time with this church he soon got in trouble with the law and ran away to Lied’s England or something. There he lived with a family that also was from the separatist church and there he met the love of his life.
After living there for a while he soon wanted to explore the new world and experience this new place full of mystery and the unknown. So he decided to take his wife on the mayflower to this new land but soon he’d realize that the ride over was terrible. He would also soon lose something he held very dear. So on the journey over he experienced many bad things like cramped conditions and sickness that spread over the ship. Lucky im and his wife dodge the sickness that spread around the ship and its people. On the ship it was really crowded and some people even slept on the floor and even on the deck of the
While being on water traveling by ship, there wasn’t much either of them could do to make the conditions any better. William Bradford couldn’t make his conditions improve due to his location on the water, far away from the resources that could help his situation. On William's ship the Mayflower one main problem was sickness and disease. Since the people were on a ship so close to each other the disease would spread quickly, and with lack of medical knowledge and help many would die. Some would just become sick from the cold and the wetness from the horrible weather they would have on their journey. Frequent storms not only caused trouble for the people on board but also caused damage to the ship. Equiano couldn’t change his conditions due to his standing as an African American slave, so he had no say or no control over what happened to him. His journey is known as the middle passage which is the trip from Africa to the americas. On this tough voyage he and the other slaves were shoved d crammed in the lower deck, where it was dark and smelled awful. This smell was from themselves because they had no toilets, and couldn’t bathe, plus people were constantly getting sick. Many of these africans died because of this air. Not only were there living conditions bad they were also frequently beaten and harassed. Mary Rowlandson had a different type of journey, when captured by the natives they
The author John Smith, a pilgrim who arrived to the Americas, wrote a description of the new land in his book “ A Description of New England ”. In this book Smith shows a wonderful world of vast food and pleasure. Also, William Bradford another pilgrim who arrived to Plymouth on the coast of Massachusetts, wrote a book called “ Of Plymouth Plantation ” in which he describes what really happened, how the pilgrims actually lived. The purpose of this essay is to compare and contrast both authors and their books. John Smith wrote about the wonderful place the New World was, on the other hand, William Bradford wrote about the realities and difficulties of the New World.
When April arrived, the crew of the Mayflower raised its sails and set off for England, offering to take any Pilgrim who wished to return to England. Faced with the choice of the harsh New World, or the religious intolerance of the King, they all stayed.
William Bradford, like Smith, was born in England and became an orphan young in his life. In his youth he lived with several different family members but never stayed anywhere too long. When he was 12 years old he began attending a separatist church the neighboring town of Scrooby. By the time he was 17 he was a full member of the church and considered separating from the official Church of England. Seeking religious freedom Bradford and other members of the church fled to the Netherlands. English influence eventually forced the Separatist out of the Netherlands and they fled to the New World. When they
William Bradford immediately states an example of God’s providence when the majority of the men are sick on board but one “able body” that “would always be contemning the poor people in their sickness.” Then, in God’s providence, “they came half seas over, to smite this young man with a grievous disease.” The second example of God’s providence that Bradford states is when a man is thrown overboard and is pulled back up by a “topsail halyard.” A third example of God’s providence that Bradford uses is when the men “were so far entangled therewith” and “they conceived themselves in great danger…and thought themselves happy to get out of those dangers before night over took them” and “by God’s providence they did.” As a result, God’s providence
Whether by land or by sea, eighteenth century colonial travel was arduous, expensive, and many times dangerous. Because of this, few people traveled very far from their homes. Transportation has changed dramatically since the late 1700’s. It was during this time that Colonial America was budding as a new country. This was before airplanes, which appeared in the very early stages of the 1900’s. Cars showed up about the same time, so rewind about 200 plus years and we’re back in colonial America. It wasn’t civilized like it is today. The dirt roads were bumpy, grimy, and when the rains came, they were mud baths. So how did people during this time get around? Often, they didn’t. Not many people could afford the cost of travel back then. Daily American Colonial Life was extremely harsh for the first settlers and colonists. They were faced with a new country, unknown territory and no friends, relatives or neighbors to help them “In those days, it was fairly expensive to travel. Because of this, generally only government officials, merchants, and planters took the risk (Constitution Facts).” Women were supposed to stay home and look after the children while the husband went off to do business. America was still a budding country, so there were not as many cities as there are now and they were more spread out. If the man wanted to travel, it would require several hours, or even several days to ride on horseback. Often the husband wouldn’t return for a couple of days, and when he
Captain John Smith and William Bradford are different in their view of the Native Americans. When comparing John Smith and William Bradford's work they wrote with different styles, due to differing audiences and purposes. Smith wrote things based on all the action, promoting himself in a third person “tall tale,” in order to establish a higher government position and bring more hard-working Englishmen to the New World. Using detail and supposed thoughts. John Smith’s work can nearly be titled as a novel and has been passed down through newer versions, such as Disney’s “Pocahontas” or “Avatar.” To compare, William Bradford’s work it probably will never turn into a movie, as it is more factual and serves as a rather boring account of the
William Bradford- Governor of the Plymouth colony following the exodus of the Pilgrims to what would become Massachusetts.
It seems that this isn't a great day for the Green Bay Packers. You know why? It's because the former No. 1 pick Sam Bradford has one of his best games right now. Even though that his career was on a roller coaster ride, Sam didn't give up and proved to them why he was picked #1 overall. This is the result when the Vikings beat the Packers in a complete upset. He started his first game with for the Vikings after his offseason was considered "tumultuous". It all began when he signed an extension with the Philadelphia Eagles, only that he was traded to the Minnesota Vikings afterwards. It's something that he really didn't expect, especially that he was the former #1 draft pick. The trade happened 8 days before the start of the season. He admitted that he was struggling to find his true form, until he has some swagger last night when he outsmarted and outplayed Aaron Rodgers.
There were two different leaders and both of them had a different perspective. One of the leaders was Captain Smith he led Jamestown and William Bradford led the Plymouth Plantation both of these leaders were very different. They both came to the US for different reasons. They both had a lot of similarities too. For example, it was hard for them to take control of the “new world”. But they both demonstrated they are strong and they both grew faith. I will be giving examples of how they were different and similar but more importantly why they came.
In the beginning of the voyage, two ships started off to sea. Speedwell soon would have to return to land due to too much water intake. This left a damper on the precious time that was wasted traveling back. Now two months late, the Mayflower is returning to sea with even more passengers than anticipated. After making it halfway across the Atlantic, a storm ultimately demanded the surrender of the Mayflower and a harsh wave cracked the main beam holding the ship together.
“The New Colossus” describes the Pilgrim’s arduous journey to and in America by inviting the homeless, the tired, and the poor to seek shelter in America. In “The New Colossus”, it says, “Send these, the homeless…” The Pilgrims are defined as homeless because they had fled Holland, which was there temporary home and sanctuary before they were pulled towards the promise of a religious haven. America provided them with shelter, a religious sanctuary, and new relationships that came with knowledge of farming and hunting. Although, before reaching the promise land, they endured months of treacherous conditions and death. William Bradford describes in his memoir Of Plymouth Plantation that, “ther dyed some times 2 or 3 of a day.” The amount death
The reason why he was traveling around North America, was because he was doing service for a King back in France. This king’s name was King Francis I, which I find kind of ironic since he is the king of France and his name is Francis. But the main
Throughout history, there have been great leaders, some for the good of humanity, and some for the not-so good of humanity. The one element all leaders have in common is in some way, have changed the course of history. The one great leader I have found to be interesting and envision of a great leader is William Bradford, an original passenger on the Mayflower, and the first ever governor elected on what is to become, American Soil.
I am Ana Campos and I am the president of the History Club. I am so honored to be with you today and to have the chance to introduce our guest speaker, William Bradford. He was the founder and governor of the Plymouth Colony, the first British Colony in the United States. He was part of the Separatists Puritans that boarded the Mayflower to settle in Virginia. He has a great appreciation of what it takes to truly achieve the Mayflower Compact. Besides that, he was born in England, 1590 and affiliated himself to the Separatist Puritans while he was a teenager. He was also a writer and wrote one of the first histories of the European settlements in America, his journal "Of Plymouth Plantation" during from 1620 to 1657. His wife Dorothy May, died
