Willpower to Achieving Health by Robert Napolitano People must learn to create their own good health through dedication of diet, exercise, healthy home life, good influences from friends, and good luck through Karma. Health was always one of the main passions in my life since I started consistently weight training at age 17. Resistance training is the habit most people lack from a young age. This really helps to set the metabolism on the right course and turn the body into a fat burning machine, plus it makes you feel great. Giving the body that shape at a young age goes a long way later on. This type of training with a diet rich in protein and low in saturated fat and sugar carbs really helped me mentally, physically, and spiritually. Also not being a consistent alcohol drinker is key for me to feel my best every day. Finding the drive to dig down deep and say I can eat right and exercise 4 to 5 times a week on a consistent basis was what motivated me so much and shaped my outlook on life at a young age. The wakeup call involving our health is seen all around us, and America is the sickest country in the world. We have such a higher standard of living versus other countries but that doesn’t translate to being healthier. Yeah we live a little more comfortably than most countries but what good is that when you feel like garbage physically and psychologically. Foods have
The traditional American diet was simple, it was homemade, it was composed primarily of minimally refined ingredients, it was low in added sugars and fats, with the fats coming primarily from animal sources, and required effort to produce, by comparison, the contemporary American diet is much more diverse it's composed a lot of “palatable” sometimes artificial materials, its commercially engineered and sold, it's composed of refined ingredients, it's high in added sugars and fats with the fat coming primarily from seed oils, and requires minimal effort to procure(Pillsbury). At the same time as modern medicine is conquered the leading killers of the 19 century such as infectious diseases modern culture has created a whole new set of epidemics that we must now cure.
Health is very important, it give you the opportunity of have a good quality of life. A country with good health has happy citizens. However, some reports show us how Americans suffer poor health. The health of Americans is worse than the health of citizens in other wealthy countries even though the United States spends more on health care than any other country. Poor health is caused by the bad nutrition, sedentary lifestyle, stress, and busy life. At the same time, the USA is full of fast food restaurants. Also, they consume a lot of junk food, for example, they consume soda, fried food, and desserts. As a result, the American lifestyle contributes to being overweight. There are three reasons why Americans have poor health.
We could institute a national, comprehensive program that would make us a world leader in preventing chronic or “lifestyle” diseases, which for the first time in history kill more people than communicable ones. By doing so, we’d not only repair some of the damage we have caused by first inventing and then exporting the Standard American diet, we’d also set a new standard for the rest of the world to follow (Bittman 299).
Ask any person on the street what is the one issue that consumes more than half of the nation and the answers will vary from cancer to the outcome of the 2016 presidential election. Most Americans are blind to the modern day plague that consumes even the nation's youth. What is this black death that promises health complications in the future, obesity affects more than two-thirds of American adults and one-third of American children. The term obesity is defined as the condition of being grossly fat or overweight. The “American diet” of processed foods is the root of the problem. The nation's health conditions have declined since the 1970’s and reached an all time low in the early 2000’s. The solution lies within the 18-27 year olds of the country
Being healthy is not just about eating lots of fruit and drinking 8 glasses of water each day. It's about young people enjoying a healthy lifestyle, feeling good about themselves and having good emotional and mental health. We hope that
Pollan defines the American problem as “unhealthy people obsessed by the idea of eating healthily.” (Pg. 3) The vast majority of consumers in our society are ones that envision themselves as striving towards a healthy lifestyle, yet many of these consumers don’t realize that in their attempts at eating healthy they are on a slow decline. A large sum of the population garners their information on which foods to eat from their daily news sources, trying new fad diets and picking up any food that Buzzfeed or the Huffington Post tells them will better their health (Pg. 1). This behavior in turn leaves those desperate for a slimmer and healthier bodies utterly confused and desolate.
Apart from healthcare issue, the country has adopted the fast-moving life style, which has pushed most of our citizens to succumb to obesity as a result of fast foods. In fact, a recent report by the UN has ranked the United States as the most obese country in the world. Parramore (2012) outlines that, “Obesity is currently being considered as a national crisis in the United States and that it contributes 100,000 to 400,000 deaths per year. Statistics at the CDC and Prevention in 2010 indicate that 35.7% of the American adult is obese.” Many input trends exist in the American society, “First and foremost, people are highly used to fried foods, sugary drinks, and processed meats among others. There is also the sedentary lifestyle that has been adopted by many,” (Huffington Post, 2013). In fact, most of us love relaxing without exercise and too much television watching. These are some of the factors that contribute to obesity. The result is health complications problems such as diabetes, stroke, and heart disease just to mention but a few. These affect the longevity of life.
To start, we Americans are living unhealthy lifestyles. We are becoming too lazy, like the Romans relying too much on their slaves. We also eat too much junk food and not enough healthy foods like fruits, and vegetables. Studies have shown that about 40% of women in the U.S. are overweight, and most teens are starting to become obese. Today, almost everyone is always watching T.V. or YouTube, and are barely exercising.
In order to be in a healthy lifestyle poeple have to make healthier choices in their life. First that you have to avoid anything that is not good for you and choose the healthy food options. People in their daily life

Michael Pollan blames on food industry and medical industry for the diseases and unhealthy body. He says that the food industry is making new products which are all about processing the food and medical industry are also making new drugs to treat chronic diseases. I agree with Michael Pollan that, food Industry and is responsible for this because it make more processed food just to make money and to make publicity about their restaurants. “A hallmark of the Western diet is food that is fast, cheap, and easy.” This type of diet is becoming more and more common in America these days and it comes with consequences. If the food is cheap people will definitely buy it daily and that's how they spoil their
After reading chapters 15 and 21 in our Current Issues and Enduring Questions book and viewing Forks Over Knives, I am afraid I do not see this worrisome food issue in America improving in the near future. Obesity is a known epidemic and it is widespread throughout the entire country. According to the documentary film, Forks Over Knives, “We spend $2.2 trillion a year on healthcare: over five times more than the defense budget.” This quote reveals the issue regarding the state of health and by maintaining a healthier diet not only do people benefit, but the government does as well. The current relationship between food and health industries brings an uncertainty that should be seen as a critical concern to the eyes of the public. Too many people
In other words, processed foods don't even have probably 1/10 the original nutrients that were in the food in the native state” (Cross). Giving up fast food can be a challenge, especially when it’s much cheaper than eating healthy. But when you compare the costs of healthy groceries to the medical bills that come from a heart attack or other preventable health conditions, it’s incomparable. In the documentary, Forks Over Knives, it is explained that every year, America spends around $2,200,000,000.00 on healthcare and that the most widely prescribed medication across the world is Lipitor which is used for treating high cholesterol (Fulkerson). So many of these metabolic diseases are preventable, yet Americans are putting their health at risk
The United States is currently under attack by a commanding disease that is seeking to bring this great nation to an early demise. This disease sucks the energy out of many individuals and takes control of the body by sparking heart attacks, strokes, high blood pressure, and even cancer. With the help of major junk food companies, this outbreak continues to claim thousands of lives each year. In our country today, this epidemic trails tobacco use in the second leading cause of preventable death. Many researchers have studied this horrible plague, and the only cure is the motivation to live a healthier lifestyle. Although the profits from major junk-food companies contribute significantly to America 's economy, the nation is blind to the
Growing up in the United States, there are many things that I had just accepted as the norm. Eating a diet heavy in meat and dairy are staples in the diet of the average American that those who differ are considered strange. Interestingly, the United States is also referred to as one of the unhealthiest nations in the world. How could we be so unhealthy, when we are such a developed country that has access to the best medical care and information. The documentary “Forks Over Knives” focuses on exactly this point. It claims that there is a fundamental problem with the diet of Americans, particularly our heavy consumption of meat and dairy. This documentary asserts that the cure for all of our health related problems is to switch to a whole
