“Increased human wolf conflict are due to rise in the wolf population coupled with the lack of state authority to remove problem wolves”.Even though Wolves can maintain populations and are beautiful animals that people say should not be harmed, I think we should be able to hunt wolves because wolves make it hard for animals to stay in one area and roam free and wolves destroy other animals habitats. “Wolves can maintain populations and are beautiful animals that should not be harmed”, which is what Howling for Wolves group said. Howling for wolves was created to be a voice for the wolves. Gray wolves are a major draw for Minnesota’s yearly $500 million wildlife tourism economy, and they hold deep cultural meanings for many minnesotans. Wolves …show more content…
Growing packs of gray wolves are inflicting a record on the number of livestock and domestic-pet kills on farms throughout the midwest. Fifty-five farms have lost 1,300 animals to wolves this year, and 41 domestic pets have been reported killed. according to the DNR, "Each wolf kills about 20 deer per year. Multiply this by the number of wolves found in Minnesota , and approximately 13,000 deer may be consumed by wolves annually.” The DNR said in a news release that this year's wolf season "poses no biological or conservation threat to the wolf population.” Wolves have a tendency to attack at times. “I had to reach behind me and jerk my head out of its mouth,” Graham said after receiving 17 staples to close the 11-centimeter laceration on his head. Graham kicked the wolf, at which point it fled. This kid is 16 years old, and if wolves aren't afraid of humans than we should be able to kill them. A example that make it hard for animals to roam free is that wolves are always pushing deer out of their grazing area, which puts a lot of stress on the animal which can make the animal sick and then the wolves get a easy kill and the deer population keeps going down every time this happens. The deer in Minnesota hit a …show more content…
The reason they are moving in is because there prey has nowhere left to go because they are getting pushed farther and farther in towards homes and civilization. Wolves can cause property damage such as the taking of pets are breaking into freezers. The most known animals that have this behavior are the Wolf / Coyote Hybrid or the coywolf. This breed is a good reason why we should be able to kill these animals because a mix of wolf and coyote is probably more of a problem then any other animal. Another Example of wolves are moving into urban areas is all the walking trails around these areas are woodlands which is what wolves like and if you're walking along with your pet and one jumps out you will most likely get attacked if you try to protect your pet. People should know by now to bring a sort of weapon or pepper spray to protect themselves. Most wolves won't hesitate to get a free meal. This is why if we kill wolves they will stop moving into urban areas and go more toward sheltered areas and will be afraid of us so they won't come near us. So it is clear that although Wolves can maintain populations are a beautiful animal that people say should not be harmed, I still think we should be able to hunt wolves for two main reasons. First, Wolves make it hard for animals
Wolves lived in the park for forty years, with claimed increasing nuisance to outsiders. The people around Yellowstone were complaining that the wolves, basically a nuisance to society, were killing animal. Thus after discussions and studies, congress agreed and the wolf extermination began. In 1914, the "Yellowstone wolf extirpation campaign began after congress appropriated funds for 'destroying wolves, prairie dogs, and other animals injurious to agriculture and animal husbandry' on public lands" (defenders). The killing of wolves continued until 1926 when the last two wolf pups of some 136 wolves were killed on a poisoned bison carcass (defenders). The eradication of wolves by hunting and other means soon cleared out most wolves in all areas of the United States. "By the 1940's humans had eliminated red and gray wolves from almost all of their historic range in the contiguous 48 states" (Noecker).
Around the world, there are thousands of wildlife animals. Gray Wolves are one type of them; their small domestic animals that are very fast, move in packs, and hunt deer and other animals for food. Despite the fact that Gray Wolves hunt deer, they are helpful animals to the ecosystem. Gray Wolves keep the ecosystem’s movement in check. They actually help the environment more than hurt it. They can be as friendly like dogs if raised from pups. They’re very interesting animals and it should be illegal to hunt them because they are almost extinct, they keep the prey population in check, and are unique animals trying to survive.
In “Scared to Death” by Ed Yong and Sharon Levy’s “Wolf Family Values,” we read about the need to protect the population of wolves in North America. These two articles have very different ways to go about this. Ed Yong talks about the wolf effects on elk as well as the rest of the environment. Levy’s approach is about wolf social structure and how it is impacted by hunting. Both of these make some valid points on why more conservation efforts should be made; however, I believe Ed Yong made the stronger case.
These animals have been heavily hunted since the early 1600’s. Some of them were hunted to get them out of locations or for food. Most of them were hunted to take their fur for warmth and to make money. It is estimated that in the 19th century more than one million wolves around the world were needlessly killed. In Minnesota, the gray wolf is considered by the federal government to be threatened, whereas it is considered fully endangered the other Great Lakes. In Alaska the gray wolf thrives in such numbers that it is neither threatened nor endangered.
Long before the settlers started to make the United States their home, “American Indians lived long beside the Gray Wolf before settlers started to come here.” (Rowe, Mark) The wolf is native to the North American continent and has been inhabiting its land for centuries. It is a canid species, or member of the canine family and is a cunning, smart, fast, and sly animal. Gray wolves range in color from black, brown, gray, and white and also look like a grown German Shepherd. They are well known for traveling in family sizes from 7-9 wolves, led by the alpha male and have a mate. They are a fierce animal that has been researched extensively because of their unique qualities and that they are near extinction.
The gray wolf packs continue to be rarely seen in North Dakota. We can’t count how many packs there is today because there is only an exiguous amount left. Gray wolves remain threatened in North Dakota in addition to some of endangered in other areas of the United States of America. Clearly, ranchers are one of the primary reasons that gray wolves stay threatened. They are killing gray wolves for the reason that the wolves are killing off their livestock. Another reason why the gray wolves remain vulnerable is because the poachers set traps to kill the gray wolves. Gray wolves keep the ecosystem healthy by keeping the elk and deer population intact. However, some hunters could see this as not helping them so they would want to kill wolves.
Wolves live, travel and hunt in packs of 7 to 8 wolves normally. wolves may howl to assemble their pack, to claim territory, to warn intruders away from a home site or kill, or to identify other wolves
Wolves are a vital part of animal's well being. In the book Never Cry Wolf by Farley Mowat, Mowat goes to study wolves in the middle of barren Canada. In Canada he meets an Eskimo named Mike and he stays in his cabin while he finds a wolf den to study. He studies how pups grow up and how the wolves hunt, also their diet. He finds out how the caribou are disappearing, and estimates how many are killed in a certain amount of time. Along with many other things Mowat uses Logos with Personification and Characterization to explain how the wolves are not savage killers.
Hunting the wolves can be very entertaining to some of the hunters because, it is a challenge. Also it gets rid of them, stops farmer’s sheep and
Anti-wolf extremists will stop at nothing until the Gray Wolf species is put to rest for good. Over the years the so called “hunters” have created a cultural background to the Gray Wolf. The bible states, "Religious convictions support our hatred of the wolf. “ Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.'”,
How can a wolf do harm and at the same time do so much good to the ecosystem? The Gray wolf is the largest canids in the wild, usually weighing between 70 and 120 lbs. They vary in color greatly from black
Wolves are just trying to survive and help their young survive just like how humans want to survive and help their young survive. The issues they are facing are mostly human causes, we need to stop killing and hunting wolves for prizes and for useless reasons, and start respecting them. Wolves are very important to nature and first nations and everyone in general. Dont you want your kids to grow up knowing what wolves are. Do you want you kids growing up their parents generation killed off wolves, no you dont. Lets stop wolves from getting
Many people tend to be afraid of wolves because of how big they are and their strength. However, we don’t see how important they are until there are drastic changes. For almost 70 years Yellowstone did not have a night where a wolves howl could be heard. In that time the deer population grew fast; because of the increase in their
Gray wolves. To some, these creatures are monsters, harbingers of death and destruction. To others, they are simply misunderstood creatures, protective of their family and their pack. However, what either side does not know is that these creatures play a greater role in their ecosystem than one human alone could understand. Grey wolves are one of thousands of different keystone species- species of organisms that have a large effect on the health and stability of a particular ecosystem. But they are also on the brink of extinction. The over hunting of these creatures in the 1900’s has lead to a severe decline in their population throughout the U.S., creating a ripple effect in the ecosystems in which they reside in. Luckily, reintroduction
The wolf was once a much slandered animal. In the western world, people feared and hated wolves, and this legacy is reflected in stories such as Little Red Riding Hood and The Boy Who Cried Wolf. In these popular children's tales the wolf is made out to be a prowler and a killer of livestock and people. There is some basis for The Boy Who Cried Wolf, for wolves have killed cattle and sheep. But what of Little Red Riding Hood? There are no records of wolves killing humans in Canada or the United States. Yet, when wolves were spotted near rural communities, fear used to grip the populace, but over time this has become less prevalent.
