CAUTION: THIS POST MAY BE OFFENSIVE I personally cannot for the life of me understand exactly what this whole woman's march was for or what it was supposed to do. Do women in this country really feel that they are oppressed? That they aren't listened to? That they don't have the same rights as men in this country? If you answered yes to any of these questions, let me shed some light on the truth of the matter for you... Last I checked you're allowed to pick what job you want. You are allowed to pick whom you marry. You are allowed to have as many children as you want. You are allowed to chose what religion you believe in. YOU HAVE SO MANY CHOICES!! Women in this country don't know what oppression is. Women in this country don't know what it
More than 600 of these marches took place all over the world, the largest being at the nation’s capitol in Washington D.C.. Those who participated did so for a multitude of reasons. Marching for not just equal rights for women, but for equal rights for the LGTBQIA+ community, for Black Lives Matter, for raising awareness about climate change, and much, much more. The hashtag Why I March has garnered up millions of Instagram posts, Tweets, Facebook updates, and articles, all from men and women standing up for their beliefs. The coordinators of the Women’s March on Washington put together a document outlining their guidelines and principles, and illustrate modern day feminism very well. They go over the basic principles that human rights are women’s rights, and women’s rights are human rights. It also demonstrates intersectionalism, calling for an end to police brutality, reformations for the criminal justice system, an end to human trafficking, rights for immigrants and refugees, among many others. Just as the first women’s convention in American history drew up a doctrine, the guiding vision and definition of principles of the Women’s March is eerily similar to the Declaration of Sentiments and Grievances written 169 years
How does one identify as a feminist? Chances are, many might not understand what the term or group that is based around it truly means due to the obscurity it has faced throughout its growing popularity in recent years. Social issues in the United States are increasing in importance, especially with various groups of people feeling underrepresented in their country that stresses the greatness of the freedom and rights promised to its people. The issues with the feminist movement have always felt pressing and proved to have a large impact in a society that is striving to reach their goals no matter the cost. Sadly, their perseverance results in a loss of credibility, misandrist ideals, and struggle to differentiate from their radical counterparts.
For centuries women had had to bow to men they were taught never to speak unless called upon or spoken to. That their sole purpose in life was to be a homemaker; a servant to the men in their lives fathers, brothers, sons. As time progressed women began to fight for their right to receive equal rights, education and vote. But that wasn’t enough in the year 2013 women still made eighty cents to every man’s dollar but that all changed one day. Women who were sick of being oppressed had risen up against the male chauvinism within society of the united states. The first measure was to take all men out of all positions of decision-making power immediately, and of any kind of social, professional position whatsoever. The men of society were
Justene glanced at the sign standing outside of the double doors to the lecture hall of her college’s conference building that read “Oppression and Privilege: A Lecture on the Problems of Oppression and Privilege in Our Society. Guest Speakers Peggy McIntosh, Marilyn Frye, and Allan G. Johnson.” She continued through the door and found her friend Ashley, giving her a brief hug before taking her seat, wondering why she had let Ashley talk her into coming to this lecture in the first place. Ashley was a Philosophy major and dedicated her life to knowing all about current issues and heavily debated topics. Justene on the other hand, was a Human Development and Family Studies major who was way
In the history of England, there have been many rulers, but none quite like the queens. Between the time of the first Queen of England and the present Queen, there have been many drastic changes. Though these two women share the same name, Elizabeth, they are known for their own contributions and styles during their life in the monarchy. Their eras were full of rich culture and historic importance. These two women made an impact on not only England, but all over the world. Their decisions and actions lead to both times of celebration and times of grievance.
Just as Martin Luther King, Jr. knew “through painful experience that freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed,” (King 227) in the fight to end segregation, the same goes for women’s rights. King learned through his time spent trying to achieve justice that if people do not actively try to carry out their goals, then nothing will be done. Women have always been seen as inferior to men in the society we live in. Unless women are able to break out of these roles they have been placed in, these deeply rooted problems will not be
Through organized agitation by picketing, parading, street speaking and demonstrations, women's struggles resulted not only in the right to vote, but also in their continued legacy of the right to free of speech, free assembly and the right to dissent. From past to present, great achievements have been made in the progress toward equal rights for women. However, the Equal Rights Amendment introduced in 1923 has still never been ratified by sufficient states for inclusion in the Constitution to truly provide equal justice under the law for women. Currently women live with many inequalities. Due to the recent Presidential election and the possibility of overturning of legislation that offers some measures of protection, women are concerned about a return to days of encroachment on individual rights. Millions of women peacefully participated in the Women’s March on Washington, not just in our nation’s capital, but all over the country and world. They took to the streets to be seen and heard. It was their intent to inform the new President that women will speak out about the concerns they face that affect their lives. The march was a huge, visible show of unity against what is feared to be an anti-feminist administration. Participants exhibited their concern for other groups marginalized by the government turnover, especially LGBTQ
Stop the Oppression of Women is a visual ad created by the ISHR, the International Society for Human Rights. The ISHR is a non-governmental, non-profit organisation that focuses on trying to improve the quality of human rights across the world. This visual focuses on the oppression of women in Islamic countries where hijab, the traditional veil that Islamic women are required to wear. There are a few main points of rhetoric to analyze from this advertisement from the ISHR, including the ethos, logos, and pathos of the visual.
The oppression of women has been brought into light in the recent years but it was the norm in many societies in early history especially in premodern east Asia. During that time, the roles of men and women in society were determined by great scholars that had the power to get their voice to be heard and set general rules in society. In China, scholars like Confucius, Mencius, and Mozi had great impact on the way people divided the roles between men and women. The overall oppression of women in premodern east Asia can be seen through quotes from great scholars about how women should be obedient to men, should not make important decisions in their families, and are not spoken of equally to men in society.
Oppression of Women In the 1850’s women did not have the option to use their voice. Women were expected to be obedient, loving housewives. This was not the case for all women. Women wanted to have the freedom to speak out and not be a servant.
“No woman can call herself free who does not control her own body, nor can no woman call herself free until she can choose consciously whether she will or will not be a mother.” Margaret Sanders, an early feminist and birth control activist, strove greatly for women, especially in their stand for contraceptives that would help prevent unwanted pregnancies. She understood that women become greatly affected by the choice of having an abortion for that right alone assures them that they are in complete control over their bodies. Denying women of this right would not only make it unconstitutional, it would make it to where the woman does not even have the right to decide matters regarding her own body. Stemming from that, there have been many
With astonishing inventions such as the cotton gin, the telephone, and the airplane, the industrial revolution provided major improvements throughout Europe in the 1800s and early 1900s. As factories spread like wildfire and working hours grew like weeds, new concerning conditions arose. Child laborers, lack of minimum wage, and indescribable working conditions motivated the proletariat to speak out for their rights. Events such as the Franchise Act and Chartist Movement eventually created workers’ rights in Europe. In accordance with the mass production of steam engines, railroads, and necessary laws, the Women’s Rights Movement emerged from Britain in the 1970’s. Women such as Emmeline Pankhurst pushed for equality with violent protests that
During my residence in Southern France I had a friend, Millan, who was your average “feminazi”- at least that’s what I thought at the time. In the summer of 2013, the more she spoke about gender equality the more annoyed I became with the entire idea of feminism. It seemed less like equality and more like an attack on men. The night of Wendy Davis’ filibuster against a bill with strict restrictions on abortion, I just knew that Millan and I would be bickering the next morning. Although I wasn’t actively against abortions, her constant nagging about women’s rights irritated me to no end.
I’m average. I don’t hate you, I’m not looking to take over the world, and I certainly don’t own a “free the nipple shirt.”
Feminist perspective developed with the ideology that women face large amounts of inequalities in a patriarchal society. They aimed to address and rid the social world of this oppression of women by men. According to Bishop, (2015) “oppression occurs when one group of people use different forms of power to keep another group down in order to exploit them. The oppressor uses the power; the oppressed are exploited” (p. 133-134). Oppression must be by individual experience and not grouped into being the same for all. This includes understanding the original ideology of feminist theory being critiqued as only considering the experiences of middle class, white women. That black women, of lower class experienced oppression much different from the other women. Women are oppressed, thus has to be understood in a different construct that women are similar in some sources, experience of oppression but also experience oppression very differently from one individual to another. Feminist theories have further been expanded do its continuation throughout society and decades to encompass many more issues and arenas than just men and women relationships. Now it seeks to understand and address oppression based on culture, race, class, etc and not only for women but for all. Therefore, Bishop (2014) outlines five components that seem common to all forms of oppression and serve to maintain its presence in society.
