Why Do Women Have A Place In The Renaissance

Both articles provided interesting viewpoints into the lives of women during the Renaissance. The article by Kelly focused more on life in the court as well as the romantic, sexual, and political lives, or lack thereof, of women during the Renaissance. The article by MacNeil focused on the life of one woman in particular, Isabella Andreini. MacNeil focused more on the arts side of the Renaissance rather than the court, political, or sexual aspects of women. As stated previously, both articles provided interesting insight into the lives on women during the Renaissance, but both articles come to different conclusions and raise different questions after reading them through.
Joan Kelly-Gadol wrote her article on whether or not she believes women had a place in the Renaissance or not. She focused on three major topics in her research: “Love and the Medieval Lady,” “Politics and Culture,” and “The Renaissance of Chastity.” During her research, she focused heavily of the lives of women in the court and rarely the lives of everyday women. The MacNeil article had many excerpts from writings by Andreini and Putneanus. The article also seemed to pull more specifics from history rather than generalizations that one does not necessarily know the resource from which it came. The MacNeil article also provided a more realistic approach to the topic of women in the Renaissance. It was able to prove that women can have a place in the Renaissance and they can come to power, but they are limited. Women are often labeled as men if their work is in the masculine arts. At the same time, the article also proved that stereotypes and the degrading of women still existed back then. It was very prominent in the scene that Andreini produced. She was challenging that and it drew huge controversy.
