Purpose The author demonstrates that systematic oppression can lead to loss of self identity. The author establishes the purpose through forceful retainment of women in the Red Centres, prohibition of literature in the society, and deprivation of women rights. Three types of Form Argument #1 – The forceful retainment of women in the Red Centres Form – Biblical Allusion The reason for the retainment of women was due to the inability of many women, especially the higher class women, to bear a child. The book repeatedly quotes the Bible as a form of explanation that the government of Gilead uses to convince its citizens that their way of promoting the generations is correct.
